'Sherlock Holmes (1922)' Blu-ray Announced
Fri Oct 07, 2011 at 09:00 AM ETTags: Kino, Disc Announcements (all tags)
The 1922 silent classic starring John Barrymore is in the works for Blu-ray at the end of 2011.
In an early announcement to retailers, Kino Video says 'Sherlock Holmes (1922)' will hit Blu-ray on December 13.
When a young prince is accused of a crime that could embroil him in international scandal, debonair supersleuth Sherlock Holmes comes to his aid, and quickly discovers that behind the incident lurks a criminal mastermind eager to reduce Western civilization to anarchy. Adapted from the hugely popular stage version of Arthur Conan Doyle¹s stories (by William Gillette), 'Sherlock Holmes' not only provided Barrymore with one of his most prestigious early roles, but also presented the screen debuts of two notable actors: William Powell ('The Thin Man') and Roland Young ('Topper'). 'Sherlock Holmes' was mastered from a 35mm restoration by the George Eastman House Motion Picture Department, and is accompanied by a score by Ben Model, performed on the Miditzer Virtual Theatre Organ.
Specs and supplements have yet to be revealed, but suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $34.95.

'Seven Chances: Ultimate Edition' Dated for Blu-ray
Thu Oct 06, 2011 at 11:00 AM ETTags: Kino, Disc Announcements (all tags)
Another Buster Keaton classic is gearing up for Blu-ray release in December.
In an early announcement to retailers, Kino Video has slated 'Seven Chances: Ultimate Edition' for Blu-ray on December 13.
Love has never been funnier or more difficult to manage than in the immortal Keaton comedies. 'Seven Chances' is a film often imitated but never rivaled for hilarity and visual virtuosity. Keaton stars as Jimmie Shannon, a romantically jinxed young man who must marry by 7:00 PM to inherit seven million dollars. In one of the most rousing, brilliantly choreographed sequences in Keaton's career, Shannon flees a horde of would be brides while dodging the hostile forces of nature that seem to be conspiring against him (in the form of a colossal rockslide) during his manic dash to the altar. This new HD transfer has been mastered from an original 35mm nitrate print from the Library of Congress.
Specs and supplements have yet to be revealed, but suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $34.95.

'Nothing Sacred' and 'A Farewell to Arms' Announced for Blu-ray
Wed Oct 05, 2011 at 03:00 PM ETTags: Kino, Disc Announcements (all tags)
Two 1930s classics are getting the high-definition treatment in December.
In an early announcement to retailers, Kino Video has revealed 'Nothing Sacred' starring Academy Award nominee Carole Lombard and Academy Award-winner Fredrich March will hit Blu-ray on December 20.
As potent today as it was when released in 1937, this classic screwball satire stars Carole Lombard as Hazel Flagg, the small-town girl who mistakenly believes she's dying of radium poisoning. Sensing a great human interest story that will tug the public's heartstrings and help sell newspapers, exploitative journalist Wally Cook (Fredric March) brings Hazel to New York City and turns her into a media darling. Wally's callous strategy takes a sudden turn when he starts having feelings for the vulnerable Hazel. Filmed in early three-strip Technicolor and scripted by Ben Hecht and James H. Street, this sharp comedy still sizzles with its cynical take on media profiteering, and the matching of Lombard and March is unforgettably entertaining.
Kino Video will also be releasing the 1932 two-time Academy Award-winning drama 'A Farewell to Arms' starring Academy Award winners Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes on Blu-ray on the same date.
A tale of the love between ambulance driver Lt. Henry (Cooper) and Nurse Catherine Barkley (Hayes) during World War I. The action takes place in Italy and the two fall in love during the war and will stop at nothing to be together. The film also analyses Lt. Henry's feelings on war and the purpose of fighting.
This first ever Blu-ray release of both films will be mastered in HD from an original 35mm nitrate print and will be the only version of the original films authorized for release from the estate of David O. Selznick.
Specs and supplements have yet to be revealed, but suggested list price for each Blu-ray is $29.95.
