May is coming to a close and ushering in the heart of the summer movie season. Many of you might be outside enjoying the nice weather, but we here at The Bonus View are huddled over our computers, working to bring you the latest and greatest in all things high-def. Let's see what happened this week.
Josh's Week of Audio
Josh Zyber took a trip to California, and while he was there he took in a few different audio presentations from companies like Dolby and DTS. There are four articles up right now that discuss, in extreme detail, what it was like listening to the demonstrations of audio that a few of these companies are coming out with in the near future.
In Part 1, Josh visits Dolby and learns about 96k upsampling. Part 2 he visits Dolby to find out what Dolby Atmos sounds like. In Part 3 Josh heads on over the DTS and experiences what he calls a "game-changer in home theater audio." In Part 4 he visits the SRS Labs and gets to listen to what they call Multi-Dimensional Audio.
If you're at all interested in the ins and outs of home theater audio then you'll want to read each of these entries to find out exactly what you can expect from these companies in the near future.

In our Weekend Roundtable we asked which board games should be made into movies next since we already have 'Battleship.' In the Mid-Week Poll we asked a very important question, "Do Spoilers Ruin Movies For You?" Let us know.
That's it for this week. We'll be back here next week. Same time. Same place. Until then, be safe and watch good movies.

Blu-ray News
This week the Blu-ray Highlights post turned into quite the discussion forum. The subject at hand was Brad Bird's decision to keep the Blu-ray aspect ratio consistent throughout the movie, instead of using switching aspect ratios for the included IMAX footage. What do you think? Come on over and voice your opinion on that post or on the Mid-Week Poll where we asked you to vote on what you thought about this decision.
In case you missed it we have an awesome giveaway this week and today is the last day to enter. Head on over to this blog post and caption the picture in the comments below. Two copies of the BBC's 'Frozen Planet' will be given away to the best captions. Believe me when I say, you want this set.

Bonus View Digest - April 6, 2012
Fri Apr 06, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: The Bonus View Digest, The Bonus View, Aaron Peck, Fun Stuff (all tags)
How was your first week of April? We had a busy one over at The Bonus View! In case you missed anything, we have it all encapsulated here in one easily digestible recap of The Bonus View. This week we covered everything from new theatrical releases, to the premieres of new television seasons. So sit back, relax, and let us guide you through the high-def extravaganza of the week that was.
TV Madness
The battles rage on as iconic television characters go head-to-head in a giant battle-to-the-death tournament. On Monday we had a very close call between Eric Northman of 'True Blood' and John Locke from 'Lost.' In the end Locke ended up pulling it out, but just barely. In the other matchup the universe's most famous Klingon, Worf, pummeled Al Capone into submission.
On Wednesday, Michael Knight from 'Knight Rider' was pitted against the world's scariest drug dealer, Omar Little from 'The Wire.' Needless to say, Little demolished him. In the other Wednesday matchup we have a very close race which is too close to call at the moment. Angel and Sarah Walker from 'Chuck' are only separated by one vote right now. So make sure to go cast your vote there because every vote counts.
Blu-ray News
If you're into collectible steelbook packaging then Tom has a few posts that you might want to read. First, check out the new Future Shop steelbook for 'Underworld: Awakening' and then head on over to see if Play.com's new 'Alien Anthology' steelbook strikes your fancy.
If you're just looking for suggestions on what to buy this week then Josh has every Blu-ray release hitting store shelves in his weekly Blu-ray Highlights post.
Theatrical News
Luke already saw this week's new movies so you can know what you should see this weekend. Find out if the new 'American Pie' movie 'American Reunion' is worth your time and box office dollars. Also, find out what Luke thought of Morgan Spurlock's new geek-centric documentary 'Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope.'
Wondering about upcoming releases? We're getting close to the summer movie season and E has a few trailers in this week's Trailer Park that you might want to take a look at. The new trailer for the remake of 'Total Recall' has finally been released. If you need your sci-fi with a bit of odd-ball humor then maybe you should check out 'Iron Sky.' Nazis attacking from the dark side of the moon, what could be better, right?
Also, we all know that you've been dying to see who won big at the Razzies. In case you didn't hear the outcomes, Josh has a complete rundown of the event which honors the worst that Hollywood has to offer.
TV Recaps
This week we covered a couple of TV's big season premieres. Check out Aaron's thoughts on 'The Killing's season two premiere, along with what Josh thought of 'Game of Thrones' season premiere. We also have recaps of 'Fringe,' and 'Awake' if you're looking to find out about what's on TV.
Special Features
In last Friday's Weekend Roundtable we discussed our favorite dystopian films. What are yours? Please let us know.
In the Mid-Week Poll we wanted to find out where you buy most of your Blu-rays. Is it online or at a physical store?
Well, that's it for this week. As always we thank you, dear readers, because without you none of this would be possible. Have a great weekend and we'll see you back here on The Bonus View bright and early Monday morning to continue talking about anything and everything related to high definition entertainment.
Bonus View Digest - March 30, 2012
Fri Mar 30, 2012 at 03:40 PM ETTags: Bonus View Digest, Aaron Peck, The Bonus View, Fun Stuff (all tags)
Where'd March go? This month has just flown by if you ask me. Even though time seems to be fast-forwarding on us, we were still able to crank out a lot of exciting posts this week. This week had a bit of everything. TV Madness is going steady as new characters punch their tickets to the next round. Check out everything you may have missed below.
TV Madness
This week featured some interesting matchups. We had a couple of lopsided matchups. Malcolm Reynolds easily took out Shane from 'The Walking Dead.' While Ben Linus outsmarted Christopher Chance.
Then we had the war of the world's most famous FBI agents. Fox Mulder went up against Dale Cooper. Mulder pulled out the win with much chagrin from the Cooper fans. In the other matchup, Buffy the Vampire Slayer easily defeated young Indiana Jones.
Today's matchup is another doozy. You get to pick who is going to win between 'Deadwood's Al Swearengen and 'Rome's Titus Pullo. After trying to figure out who will win in that matchup you have another hard choice in voting for either Detective Sonny Crockett or Jarod from 'The Pretender.'
Home Theater News
Josh took a look at after-the-fact 3D conversion gear, most specifically a new box called the 3D-Bee. Is this the 3D box for you? Check out what Josh has to say about it.
Theatrical News
This week Luke saw and reviewed quite a few movies which are opening today. Check out reviews for 'Mirror, Mirror,' 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,' and 'Wrath of the Titans.'
TV Recaps
'The Killing' starts its second season on Sunday. Aaron took a bit of time to write down his thoughts on the end of the first season and why he is mildly excited for the show's second season. What do you think? Will you be tuning it to see what happens? Take the poll.
Other recaps include 'Awake,' 'Fringe,' and two recaps of 'Alcatraz.'
Special Features
This week's Mid-Week Poll we asked how old your TV set is, while in The Weekend Roundtable we talked about crazy cinematic cross-overs and what it would be like to see them happen. Finally, don't forget to check out this week's Critical Mass. Luke and Aaron argue whether or not 'The Descendants' was really a great film. Luke liked it; Aaron didn't think it was worthy of all the hype it got. Make sure to take the poll and voice your opinion.
Thanks for joining us here on The Bonus View. Another month has sailed by, but it's been fun all the same.
Bonus View Digest - March 9, 2012
Fri Mar 09, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: The Bonus View, The Bonus View Digest, Aaron Peck, Fun Stuff (all tags)
This week went by so fast I almost forgot completely about writing The Bonus View Digest. Luckily, in my early morning stupor I somehow remembered that today is Friday and our readers are probably waiting close to their computers for the Digest to pop up. So, I downed some caffeine and got to work. Let's see what happened this week.
Blu-ray News
The big news on the blog right now is that today is the last day to enter the contest to win a free Blu-ray copy of 'Puss in Boots.' If you haven't entered yet, please do so. It's a free Blu-ray. How could you go wrong?
TV Madness
With March Madness gearing up we started up our own tournament, filled to the brim with badass TV characters ready to do battle with whoever stands in their way.
We started things off with a look at the bracket and a few tournament statistics that we thought were cool going into the contest.
This week we had a Clark Kent Playoff to see which Clark could find his way into the tournament. It was fun. Which one would you have voted for? It may surprise you to see who won.
Also check out the newest matchup that has been posted which will be available for voting until Monday. Hulk Hogan's Hurricane Spencer goes up against 'Covert Affairs' spy Annie Walker. In the other matchup serial killer Dexter Morgan battles martial arts master Caine to see who advances to the next round. Make sure to vote.
Theatrical News
This week Luke saw and reviewed Disney's new sci-fi epic 'John Carter' and also took the time to see the lesser known romantic comedy 'Friends with Kids.'
In The Trailer Park E reiterated how much of a sucker he is for movies starring Mila Jovovich, which is why he's excited for another new 'Resident Evil' film.
In Aaron's Posterizing post this week he covered a number of new movie posters including 'The Raid' and 'Brave.' Make sure to read all the way through, however, to find out if Aaron was able to redeem himself from last week's bitter disappointment when he tried to buy a 'Lonesome Ghosts' from Mondo.
TV Recaps
As always we have a bunch of recaps waiting for you along with our thoughts on a couple series premieres. The premieres this week included the new ABC comedy 'GCB' and NBC's new drama starring Jason Issacs called 'Awake.' See what Josh had to say about them.
Also, this week we have a new recap for 'The Walking Dead,' along with two recaps for 'Alcatraz.'
Special Features
In this week's Mid-Week Poll we asked you if you lend out your movies to others, or do you ferociously guard them from the outside world? In the Weekend Roundtable last Friday we discussed the topic of hosting the Oscars, and if you had the final say in the matter who would you pick?
HDD Checks out Prescreen, A New Streaming Service Specializing in Independent Films
Tue Mar 06, 2012 at 12:15 PM ETTags: Streaming, Industry Trends, The Bonus View (all tags)
by Michael S. Palmer
Personally speaking, I'm a pretty big fan of Groupon because there are always fantastic deals to try a new local restaurants. While I instantly junk most emails from online retailers, I look forward to daily Groupon announcements because I can't wait to see what new foodie adventure awaits.
This modern Internet age reminds me how we are constantly swimming in choices -- which friends to follow, what places to eat, what entertainment to enjoy -- but I also remember the days when my small town had a grand total of two movies screens playing only Hollywood studio movies. Don't get me wrong, I love huge tentpole studio movies, but even when the Megaplex Era took off, increasing local screen counts, the video store was really the only way expose oneself to independent cinema. For me, film festivals always seemed like magical, far off events. Thankfully, with DVD/Blu-rays and Netflix, things have been changing for the better, but I would imagine for most people who don't live in Los Angeles, New York, Park City, Austin, or a handful of other areas where there are art house cinemas and/or film festivals, it's still pretty hard to get instant, easy axis to documentary and independent films.
If you love movies and enjoy the Groupon experience, but don't have enough access to indie cinema, there's a new service you may want to try: Prescreen. Here's the scoop:
What is Prescreen?
A brand new venture from one of Groupon's creators, Prescreen is a streaming video-on-demand service specializing in independent films. It's a site to see a flick you've maybe never heard of, or never thought you'd get to see. And it's relaunching with a newly forged Facebook alliance. But I'm getting ahead of myself, let's talk content. Prescreen execs scour film festivals like Sundance, SXSW, and Tribecca to make streaming deals with independent film distributors of all genres. Each movie is encoded to Flash in 720p HD with stereo sound, and a variable bit rate, meaning the servers will give you the fastest streaming bitrate possible for your computer and Internet bandwidth. And because films typically remain on Prescreen for 60 days, Prescreen's library is constantly refreshing itself. When they get to the site, some films stream day-and-date with their home video releases, and sometimes they stream while they're still in cinemas.
How do I sign up and how much does it cost?
Easy, anyone can surf on over to Prescreen.com and watch trailers for all the available movies as well as for others (Oscar nominations or Sundance Selections), but to build a queue, and rent something, you need to sign up, for free, via your Facebook account. Then it's up to you. Browse, queue up, and rent, or sit back and relax. Like Groupon, Prescreen will email you every day with a brand new Featured Movie to watch. Movies generally rent for around $4, with some titles costing as much as $8. But, on a film's first day, films are usually discounted down to $2.
Where can I stream my rentals?
After adding movies to your QUEUE, you then decide whether or not to WATCH NOW (aka, rent the film). After clicking Watch Now, you have a 48-hour window to stream the film on any PC. Currently, HTML5 tags are added to all the trailers so you can access them from any iOS or mobile devices, but to stream a full feature film, you're going to need a Mac or a Windows PC running Internet Explorer 7+ (PC), Firefox 8+ (PC, Mac), Safari 4+(Mac), Chrome 6+(PC, Mac). Sadly, the only way to stream a Prescreen rental to your big-screen HDTV is if you have a computer hooked directly to one; so if you have an HTPC, you're good to go. However, Prescreen says they're hoping to bring in third party apps, and there might even be something in the works for one of the major gaming consoles, starting Q2 of this year so you'll be able to stream Prescreen movies anywhere you have an Internet connection.
What's this about Facebook integration?
As part of its new relaunch this week, Prescreen has partnered with Facebook to make the whole experience more social. Akin to Spotify or Yahoo News, if you log into Prescreen via Facebook, and watch a trailer or add a movie to your queue, this will post to your Facebook timeline and/or news feed to let your friends know what you're doing. Conversely, if you're friends are Prescreen members, you'll be able to see what titles they're checking out, and hopefully you'll be encouraged to join in. I know when my friends listen to tracks I've never heard on Spotify, or read interesting news articles I might not have found myself, I'll click on those links to hear or read what they're up to. Here, you'll maybe sample a trailer you might have never seen before. For those worried about privacy, this is an optional part of the Prescreen experience, and what movies you actually rent are never reported to your timeline; only trailers and movies you place in your queu.
Not sure if I'm sold yet, but maybe I'd try it if there was an exclusive coupon for High-Def Digest Readers?
Look, I get it. You're probably an HDD reader because you love Blu-ray's unparalleled picture and sound quality. Honestly, Prescreen can't compete here. But I think there is also an opportunity to find movies that aren't necessarily available to buy or rent on Blu-ray (though sometimes that's certainly the case). However, our friends over at Prescreen are pretty confident about their service, so they're offering an exclusive coupon code to the first 250 HDD Readers who try the service. Enter HighDef1 to receive $4 off your first rental(s). If these coupons are scooped up quickly, Prescreen may even offer us another.
The hope is simply that this simple, easy-to-use service will give you access to a variety of interesting and (sometimes) hard to find titles. We're also going to hold a contest over on HDD's Bonus View blog next week, where one lucky winner is going to win a $25 credit to use on Prescreen (worth up to 12 rentals, if the winner plays his or her cards right -- Stay tuned for details!).
So, if you're interested, head on over to Prescreen, watch a few trailers, rent a discounted movie, and tell us what you think right here in the HDD Forums. Is this something you might join? Do you already have access to independent movies? Would you be more interested with 1080p content or the ability to watch it on your bigscreen HDTV?
See what people are saying about this story in our forums area, or check out other recent discussions.
Bonus View Digest - March 2, 2012
Fri Mar 02, 2012 at 02:30 PM ETTags: The Bonus View Digest, The Bonus View, Aaron Peck, Fun Stuff (all tags)
February has come and gone. Although, we ended February with a bang! Thank you to all of those who joined us for the Oscars Live-Blog, it truly was fun to discuss the show with all of you. The contest went smoothly too, as ten readers found themselves new owners of free Blu-rays.
This week we start a new March Madness-themed tournament like we did last year. Remember the Movie Madness Tournament? Well, we're starting a March TV Madness Tournament where we've come up with a field of 64 combatants from television who will do battle with each other to see who the biggest badass of television is. Make sure to join us as we jump head first into the tournament starting next week!
TV Madness Tournament
We've started the tournament with a column asking for suggestions on who you think should be added to the tournament. Please, visit the article and jot down a few television character names and we'll see if we can fit them in.
The Oscars
If you didn't get to catch the Live-Blog last Sunday, then you can always read through the replay. It was great fun. Whenever we get together with our fellow readers in a real-time atmosphere there's never a dull moment. Thanks again!
Aaron and Josh both made their opinions known about the Oscars telecast. Josh's 2012 Oscars Post Mortem column talked about his dislike for quite possibly the whole show from Billy Crystal hosting to the way the whole thing was put together. In Aaron's The Good, The Bad and The Horrid of Oscars 2012 he tries to find a few good things to sprinkle among the otherwise dour experience.
Theatrical News
In The Trailer Park this week E covers a trio of films that show just how badass America really is. Here's where you can check out the new trailer for 'Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.'
Aaron covered new movie posters this week in another edition of Posterizing. He had some bad news though when he didn't end up getting a Mondo poster he desperately wanted.
Luke covers the new theater releases this week with reviews of 'Project X' and 'The Lorax.'
Home Theater News
This week in our Mid-Week Poll we asked you a very important question that seems to come up quite a lot when people are discussing upgrades to their home theater. What is more important quality video or quality audio? Please come join in on the discussion.
Josh unboxed one of his older DVDs, this time it's a Canadian import of 'Amelie.'
TV Recaps
Check out our recaps of 'The Walking Dead,' 'Fringe,' and 'Alcatraz' from this week. Let us know how you think these shows are going and what they can improve upon.
Special Features
Last week's Weekend Roundtable dealt with an Oscar related subject. What is your most hated or love Oscar nominated song? We want to know!
That's it for this week. Remember to stay tuned for the March TV Madness Tournament. We had tons of fun last year with the March Movie Madness Tournament and we're determined to have at least twice as much fun this time around.
Thanks, everyone, for joining the conversation and making The Bonus View such a fun place to visit.

With last-minute replacement Billy Crystal hosting for the 74th time, not to mention a huge assortment of behind-the-scenes fiascoes with the production, the ceremony itself promises to be yet another overlong, self-important, and generally boring slog, if not an outright clusterfrack. Bonus View Digest - February 24, 2012
Fri Feb 24, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: The Bonus View, Bonus View Digest, Fun Stuff, Oscars Live Blog, 2012 Oscars Live Blog, Prizes (all tags)
Well February sure flew by, didn't it? This has been a special week at The Bonus View. We've been gearing up for the Oscars, which will air this Sunday night, and once again, we'll be live-blogging them! We know we shouldn't care so much about them, but because we love movies we're drawn to them like bugs to a bug zapper.
If you're as excited as we are for Sunday or just want to have a good time with some fun people then you'll definitely need to check out our Live-Blog of the Oscars. We did this a few weeks ago with The Golden Globes and it's always a hit. It's a great way for us as writers to communicate, in real time, with our hilarious and witty readers. Even if you couldn't care less about who wins, it's still a good time. We'll have polls, pictures and best of all contests! During the Golden Globes Live-Blog we gave away a stack of free Blu-rays. Participating in these contests are the best possible odds you'll ever have on any online contest, trust us on that. We want as many people as possible to walk away with prizes. We're still not set on the prize structure of this week's live-blog, but we promise that you'll have great chances of winning.
Even if somehow you don't win, then you still came and had a good time talking about/making fun of the Oscars and their overly long telecast. Truthfully, it's the only way to enjoy this back-patting festival that the Academy puts on for themselves. Yet, there's something about it. Something that draws us in. We want to know who is going to win. Hopefully, it will validate our own personal choices of what was The Best in 2011. At least that's what I'm hoping for.
It's a good time. It really is. If nothing else, please come and chat and win some free Blu-rays.
The Oscars
This week was full of Oscar-related posts. In our gearing up for the telecast we have all kinds of articles that will keep you excited for the events on Sunday.
First, check out Aaron's predictions of who will win each of the major categories. First up was the Visual Categories, followed by the Sound Categories. After that Aaron tried to predict how the categories of Acting, Writing and Directing will all play out. A prediction post of the Best Picture Categories will be along soon, so don't miss it.
Our Mid-Week Poll was even about the Oscars. We asked you who you think will win the Best Picture Award and also who you think should win the Best Picture Award. The votes on both sides are overwhelmingly in favor of 'The Artist', do you agree? Please let us know in the poll.
Home Theater News
Josh showed us how he, an ardent collector of movies and their packaging, has finally given in to his space needs and reduced much of his collection to disc sleeves and a big decorative trunk. Are your movies beginning to overtake your shelves? Your living room? Your house? Then Josh's solution to the problem may be the answer you're looking for.
We've all had them. Home Theater Headaches! They're awful. We turn on our theater and something isn't working, then we spend more time to fix the problem than it would've taken us to watch the movie in the first place. Find out about Josh's recent run-in with his Laser Disc player.
Theatrical News
Luke stopped by the cinema this week and saw the two big movies that are opening this weekend. Find out what he thought about the oh-so realistic Navy Seals movie 'Act of Valor' and his thoughts on the new Paul Rudd R-rated comedy 'Wanderlust'.
In The Trailer Park E discusses some of the reboots that will be making their way to theaters shortly.
Special Features
This week's Weekend Roundtable we took a nit-picky look at our favorite films. Even though we love these films, there are one or two things about them that really, truly bug us. Find out what they are.
That's it for this week!
We really hope you stop on by this Sunday for our Live-Blog of the Oscars. We're going to be starting the blog at 7 PM Eastern so make sure you make the proper time adjustments for your respective time zone (6 PM Central, 5 PM Mountain, and 4 PM Pacific). We'll start with the pre-show and talk as the stars arrive on the red carpet, then we'll go into the wee hours of the morning until we're all delirious from our overdose of Billy Crystal. What do you say? Sounds like a great time eh? If that doesn't make you want to join us then FREE Blu-rays should. Come. Win something. Stay awhile. We hope to see you all there!
