'Frozen Planet' Announced for Blu-ray
Tue Jan 24, 2012 at 01:00 PM ETTags: BBC, Disc Announcements (all tags)
The BBC follow-up to 'Planet Earth,' 'Life,' and 'Human Planet' is bound for Blu-ray in April.
In an early announcement to retailers, BBC/Warner will be releasing 'Frozen Planet on the high-definition format on April 17.
From BBC Earth and Alastair Fothergill, Executive Producer of 'Planet Earth' and 'The Blue Planet: Seas of Life,' 'Frozen Planet' is the epic tale of two disappearing wildernesses. The Arctic and Antarctic remain the greatest wildernesses on Earth. The scale and beauty of the scenery and the sheer power of the elements – the weather, the rough ocean and the ice – is unmatched anywhere else on our planet. Many of the most spectacular landscapes, charismatic animals and their behavior have never been recorded before. Filmed with the same breathtaking camera techniques as 'Planet Earth' and 'Life,' 'Frozen Planet' tells the compelling story of animals such as the wandering albatross, the adelie penguin and the polar bear, and paints a portrait that will take your breath away, at a moment when, melting fast, the frozen regions of our planet may soon be changed forever.
The 3-disc set will include all seven episodes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack and supplements include Science at the Ends of the Earth documentary, On Thin Ice featurette, and six Freeze Frame Video Diaries.
Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $54.98.

'Torchwood: Miracle Day' Blu-ray Up for Pre-Order
Mon Dec 12, 2011 at 11:00 AM ETTags: Disc Announcements, BBC (all tags)
The 10-part fourth season of the sci-fi series is in the works for Blu-ray.
In an early announcement to retailers, Warner/BBC's 'Torchwood: Miracle Day' appears to be coming to Blu-ray in the near future.
John Barrowman ('Doctor Who,' 'Desperate Housewives') and Eve Myles ('Doctor Who,' 'Little Dorrit') are joined by stars Mekhi Phifer ('ER, 'Lie to Me') and Bill Pullman ('While You Were Sleeping,' 'Independence Day') for a new heart-pounding season of 'Torchwood.'
When convicted child killer Oswald Danes (Pullman) miraculously survives his own execution, the footage holds America transfixed. And then everyone realizes that nobody is dying. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next. People keep aging -- they get hurt and sick -- but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight.
With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four month's time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can’t be a natural event – someone’s got to be behind it. It’s a race against time as CIA agent Rex Matheson (Phifer) investigates a secret British institution named Torchwood that seems to hold the answers, and finds only two surviving members: Gwen Cooper (Myles), who has retreated to a remote Welsh hideaway with her new family, and the mysterious, brilliant Captain Jack Harkness (Barrowman). But soon they all find themselves in the same fight against the greatest threat humanity has ever known – humanity itself.
Specs, supplements, and a release date have not been set yet, but suggested list price for the Blu-ray is set at $59.99.

The BBC iPlayer Makes it to Canada
Fri Dec 02, 2011 at 10:00 AM ETTags: BBC, iPlayer, Streaming, Canada (all tags)
It's coming to the US soon, but until then we have reason to be jealous of our neighbors to the north.
Canadian fans of British television now have access to the BBC iPlayer, an app for the iPhone that allows subscribers to watch shows from the BBC any time they want. It's a bit like a British Hulu.
The BBC is adding a little bit of incentive for Canadian customers to use the service too. They'll be giving up one piece of entertainment a day until Christmas. They're hoping, of course, that this taste of what you can watch on the iPlayer will inspire viewers to pay the $8.95 a month subscription for the rest of the content.
Canada is the 16th territory to get access to the program and the first in North America. A US release date hasn't been announced, but the BBC has confirmed that the iPlayer is on the way to the states.

The BBC is Going 3D With Wimbledon
Thu Jun 09, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: BBC, 3D, Industry Trends (all tags)
The broadcast will be free to anyone with a 3D set and glasses.
The BBC has been holding out on 3D a bit longer than most other broadcasting companies. They've said in the past that they're waiting to make sure it's a technology that's going to stick around and actually offer something to customers before jumping on the bandwagon.
Apparently, 3D has proven itself, because the BBC is making the leap. They're going to air their first ever 3D broadcast on Saturday, July 2nd during Wimbledon.
"We're bringing audiences a new way of getting close to the action," says Danielle Nagler, head of HD and 3D at the BBC. "I'm sure that 3D will only add to the drama as the world's greatest players compete for the championship."
