Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Blu-ray Review Batman's Eyes

Celebrating 30 years of animated Batman glory, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm has been fully restored for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Where was Kevin Conroy's Batman in that silly multiverse convergence scene in The Flash? If you're like me and starting to feel a bit old - news that Batman: Mask of the Phantasm celebrating its 30th Anniversary starts to hit hard. Originally planned as a direct-to-video release, the film was so good it demanded a theatrical run.  I was 11 when I saw this incredible film in theaters and was always perplexed how this movie could be so amazing and yet all of my friends could think Batman Forever was a better movie. Now to celebrate its big anniversary, Warner Bros. is delivering fans a fully restored 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray to thoroughly scrutinize - hopefully, it's more akin to the excellent Batman: The Animated Series release and not that woefully scrubbed Max Fleischer's Superman set.

Already up for pre-order - here's the press release for all the gory details:

BURBANK, CA (July 26, 2023) – Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the most universally acclaimed film in the Dark Knight’s legendary cinematic history when the newly-remastered animated movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, comes to 4K Ultra HD for the very first time. From Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment, the film will be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD on September 12, 2023.

The release will also include an all-new featurette Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight, which takes a look at the legacy of Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman for 30 years in film, television, video games and more.

Rooted in DC’s acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series and released theatrically on Christmas Day 1993, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm has not only been ranked by Time magazine as one of the 10 best Super Hero movies ever, but is also arguably the core fans’ all-time favorite Batman film. The movie has been rated at the top of the Dark Knight film franchise by such popular entertainment media as Empire, Screenrant and Paste. And in the ultimate mainstream salute for its time, Gene Siskel & Robert Ebert didn’t initially review the film during its theatrical release, but later dedicated a portion of their At The Movies weekly TV series to pay compliment to the film – and voice their regret for not giving it the attention it deserved during its original run – when Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was distributed for home entertainment.

The 4K HDR/SDR remaster of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was sourced from the 1993 Original Cut Camera Negative and was scanned at 4K resolution. Digital restoration was applied to the 4K scans to remove dirt, scratches and additional anomalies, but special care was given to not touch the film grain or the animation cel dirt that was part of the original artwork. This is the first time since its theatrical release that it is presented in its 1.85 aspect ratio. The original 2.0 mix and the 5.1 tracks were remastered to remove or improve defects such as pops, ticks, dropouts and distortion.

The animated film features an all-star cast headed by the quintessential voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, alongside Dana Delany (Desperate Housewives, China Beach) as Bruce Wayne’s love interest, Andrea Beaumont, Mark Hamill (Star Wars franchise) as the Joker, Stacy Keach (Nebraska, Prison Break, Mike Hammer) as Phantasm/Carl Beaumont, Abe Vigoda (Barney Miller, The Godfather) as Salvatore Valestra, Efrem Zimbalist Jr. (The F.B.I.) as Alfred, Hart Bochner (Die Hard) as Arthur Reeves, Bob Hastings (McHale’s Navy, The Poseidon Adventure) as Commissioner Gordon, Robert Costanzo (Forget Paris, City Slickers) as Detective Bullock, Dick Miller (Gremlins, The Terminator) as Chuckie Sol, and John P. Ryan (The Right Stuff) as Buzz Bronski. Additional voices included Pat Musick, Marilu Henner, Neil Ross, Ed Gilbert, Jeff Bennett, Jane Downs, Vernee Watson, Charles Howerton, Thom Pinto and Peter Renaday.

The Batman: Mask of the Phantasm filmmaking team is composed of the award-winning core group behind Batman: The Animated Series. Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm directed the film from a screenplay by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko and Michael Reaves, based on a story by Burnett.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm will be available on September 12, 2023 to purchase Digitally from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Vudu and more. 4K Ultra HD Discs will be available to purchase online and in-store at major retailers. Pre-order your copy now.

    SYNOPSIS:

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm opens with the city's most feared gangsters being systematically eliminated, and assumed blame falling on the Caped Crusader. But prowling the Gotham night is a shadowy new villain, the Phantasm, a sinister figure with some link to Batman's past. Can the Dark Knight elude the police, capture the Phantasm and clear his own name? Unmasking the Phantasm is just one of the twists in this dazzling animated feature, which provides new revelations about Batman's past, his archrival the Joker, and Batman's most grueling battle ever - the choice between his love for a beautiful woman and his vow to be the defender of right.

    SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE*:

Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight (New Featurette) – For 30 years, Kevin Conroy defined Batman for multiple generations using only his voice, best exemplified in the landmark film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Conroy passed away in November 2022, but his legacy lives on in 15 films, nearly 400 episodes of animated television series, a dozen video games, and as a live-action Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse’s 2019-2020 “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event. Several of Conroy’s contemporaries – including animation legend Bruce Timm, Batman producer Michael Uslan and revered voice actress Tara Strong – pay tribute to the star who remains the Dark Knight for millions of Batfans.

Bonus episode of Justice League: Unlimited featuring a cameo from Phantasm.

  • Got A Spare Grand? Hot Toys Reissues 1989 Batman 1/6 Figure and Batmobile

Posted Sun Feb 19, 2023 at 06:44 AM PST by
Hot Toys 1989 Batman and Batmobile 1/6 Figure Reissues now up for pre-order

Ever wanted to own a little Michael Keaton? After going out of print a few years ago, Hot Toys is now reissuing two of their most popular 1/6 scale figures based on Tim Burtan’s iconic 1989 film. Maybe a new Jack Nicolson Joker is on the horizon?

If collecting your favorite movies in the highest quality format wasn’t enough for you to express your love for your favorite movies, the action figure market is a whole other game - and can be quite expensive and addicting! Now with 2023’s The Flash trailer revealing the long-awaited return of Michael Keaton as Batman, Hot Toys is reissuing two of their most popular 1/6 scale figures - Keaton’s 1989 Batman and Batmobile. Not stopping at a simple re-issue, it looks like fans can expect something new in the box as well!

    Deluxe Edition Batman

Expected ship date April 2024-September 2024

While scoring this excellent figure may be a boon for those who initially missed out several years ago, this new Deluxe Edition will feature a new display base depicting the church gargoyle from the film’s climax. If that wasn’t cool enough, the gargoyle is apparently removable allowing you to give Batman a dramatic perch to spot any crime in your home theater room!

If the description of the figure is accurate, it looks like collectors can expect a new head with separate rolling eyes. For many collectors (myself included), the previous edition of this head was a pain and the eye mechanism could jam or break leaving your figure looking cross-eyed and rather stupid. On top of the base figure, you get some extra hands, batarangs, ninja stars, grappling hooks, remote, and other items to spice up your display.

This figure is currently up for pre-order at Sideshow Toys and rolls for a pretty hefty $345 before shipping and taxes.

    Collector’s Edition Batman

Expected ship date April 2024-September 2024

Now if you’re not interested in a fancy display base, a more basic version of the figure is also up for pre-order and will only run you a modest $279 before shipping and taxes. With that, you get pretty much everything the Deluxe Edition figure has to offer, minus the fancy display base.

But what’s the point of owning a Batman figure without his car?

    1989 Batmobile

Expected ship date April 2024-September 2024

Talk about a grail accessory for any number of collectors! For many fans, the Batmobile design peaked in 1989 and has never been improved upon. This classic piece of machinery in 1/6 scale form was expensive and hard to come by when it was first issued. While it’ll be easier to pick up now with a new pre-order, it’s not going to be cheap. Sideshow has it pegged at $715 before taxes and shipping!

But, this is a hell of an accessory item. Designed to fit your 1/6 1989 Batman figure, it is massive stretching roughly 40 inches long (about the size of my three-year-old!), almost 16 inches wide, and ten inches high at the wings. But this isn’t just a fancy model to look at. The wheels turn, it has hidden front machine guns, side disc launchers, complete with light-up LED dash display, headlights, tail lights, and jet engine!

Of course, these are high-tier collector’s items and cost a pretty penny, but Sideshow does offer financing and a rewards program for members to help you build your collection. Happy collecting!

The biggest film of 2022 (so far) and one of the best comic book movies ever made, The Batman comes home to Digital April 18th and 4K UHD and Blu-ray Disc May 24th, 2022

Just this morning we posted on social about how The Batman was now available for pre-order from Best Buy due to hit store shelves May 24th. Now Warner Bros. makes it official. Premier digital retailers like iTunes and Vudu should see The Batman arrive for purchase on April 18th - the same day it arrives on HBO Max. As usual, Disc Collectors will have to sit tight a few more weeks until May 24th to get their hands on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray copies. The cool thing is you'll have some options with some exciting store exclusives for picking this one up! Personally, after three visits to IMAX, I'm just glad to see this coming home sooner rather than later!

Now here's where things get interesting. Walmart is showing a listing for a pretty snazzy deluxe Gift Set option with three discs. All artwork we've seen for other editions and the official press release indicate a 2-Disc release and nothing in Walmart's listing tells us what is on that third disc yet. We've made inquiries so hopefully, we'll find out soon what is on that third disc that's clearly labeled "bonus features"

The Batman - 4K UHD Walmart Exclusive

There is also a listing for a Target Exclusive Blu-ray - but it looks like the standard artwork and there's nothing to indicate what the exclusive is. When we find out we'll create a listing and add that to this roster of releases.

Right now we don't quite have full specs for the 4K Ultra HD - we know that it will have Atmos Audio (as will the Blu-ray) but we have not heard back yet about HDR grade so count on base HDR10 for now. As soon as we know more we'll update our listings and this article. Until then, you can check out Warner Bros. full press release below.
