Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg Excited About 3D In The Home

Speaks on Blu-ray, autostereoscopic displays, and 3D integration at the theater.

Jeffrey Katzenberg spoke recently at Fortune’s Brainstorm: Tech conference on the 3D format for both movies and in the home, and not surprisingly, he’s largely for them. While 3D technology in the home is still up in the air, Katzenberg is optimistic, stating "Blu-ray is a fantastic platform for 3D."

He commented as well on autostereoscopic displays, the 3D displays that don’t need glasses. While at last year’s CES the offerings were largely unwatchable from any point except for the exact sweet spot, Katzenberg believes it’s only “a handful of years” before the technique is perfected.

As far as 3D in the theater goes, integration is going very smoothly. Initially there was a large push from both Dreamworks and Pixar for theaters to integrate 3D movies into their lineup, but as more movies are being released, more theaters are rushing to adapt. In a conference call on Tuesday, Katzenberg proudly stated “3-D performances are kind of off the chart, so pretty much throughout the world, exhibition is now chasing this, as opposed to us chasing them”.

New BD-Live Content Launches for 'Tranformers' Blu-ray

Tags: Exclusive HD Content, BD-Live Titles, DreamWorks (all tags)

DreamWorks has unveiled details of its latest BD-Live feature for the 'Transformers' Blu-ray, a video called "Robot Ninjas" which is launching today.

The vignette showcases the battle seen in the film between Bumblebee and Barricade, and comes from video diary footage and animatics culled by the film's stunt crew.

The BD-Live feature is accessible beginning today via any BD-Live-capable (Profile 2.0) Blu-ray player with internet access.

The studio says a second BD-Live feature, "What Effing Happened to Mason City" will appear in the near future, though details remain TBA.

It is also expected that DreamWorks will use the 'Transformers' Blu-ray to promote the upcoming theatrical sequel, 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.' We'll keep you posted.

Tags: Disc Announcements, DreamWorks (all tags)

Adding another "catch up" title to their Blu-ray catalog, DreamWorks has announced a mid-December release for the Ben Stiller comedy 'The Heartbreak Kid.'

Originally released on HD DVD in late 2007, this remake of the 1972 cult favorite (starring Charles Grodin in the Stiller role) barely earned $35 million at the domestic box office. DreamWorks will give the Farrelly Brothers-directed farce another shot when it hits Blu-ray on December 16.

Extras are plentiful and match the HD DVD, including an audio commentary with the Farrellys, four featurettes ("The Farrelly Brothers in: The French Tradition," "Ben & Jerry," "Heartbreak Halloween," "The Egg Toss"), deleted scenes, a gag reel and the film's original theatrical trailer.

Tech specs will see a BD-50 dual-layer presentation with 1080p video and English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio, plus standard Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and subtitle options in English, French and Spanish.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.99.
