LG working to beat Samsung to market.

The LG EA9800 represents the company's first attempt at a curved image-preserving OLED TV. The 55" "Paper Slim" design attempts to replicate the curved angle of cinema screens that when combined with the set's red, green, blue, and white organic LEDs hopes to increase viewer immersion.

Kyung-Jin Kang, a lead engineer at LG's Home Electronics, "When you go to the cinema the screen is curved. By applying that to the TV you can enjoy being at the cinema in your living room."

Naturally, the 55" screen size is just the beginning. Hung W.K. Shin, Home Electronics Product Communication Team Manger at LG, "We are preparing various types of curved TV. Not only 55-inch models but larger as well. Consumers will be most strongly immersed with this curve."

As LG vies with Samsung, the immediate goal with OLED is to be first to market. Trusted Reviews has derived from several LG interviews that LG EA9800 is being be pushed for release this year, but the exact date is not yet known.

Thomas Lee, LG’s Vice President of Home Entertainment, "curved TVs are coming in the second half of this year."

LG Already Demonstrating UHD Sports Coverage

4K Final Four demonstration coming to a retailer near you.

As Ultra HD continues to advance towards bringing the 4K standard to living rooms everywhere, one regularly occurring question involves the seeming dearth of UHD content. Recently, as the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament narrowed down to the last four teams, LG used the Louisville Michigan semifinal to showcase both live UHD and 4K upscaled from 1080i.

LG partnered with CBS and Turner to create Ultra HD recordings of both semifinals and the final game. Some of the footage was shown live through closed-circuit broadcast on the LG 84LM9600 in a LG area of the Georgia Dome. During the final, LG replayed 4K footage from the semifinal, while also showing the live upscaled final using LG's Resolution Upscaler Plus Circuitry.

When asked about broadcasting in UHD, LG Electronics marketing director Kyle Kiang stated that production is "a great first step," even though the production system was not quite ready for live 4K broadcasting.

Anyone wishing to see the 4K capture from the three games can look forward to viewing a 84", 65" or 55" LG UHD in a retail showroom. While this has been the first time a major US sporting event has been produced natively in 4K, it will not be the last.

Shakedown: Police Enter Samsung Offices in Search of LG OLED Documents

Samsung spokesperson: "We have no reason to steal other companies’ technology, as we have the world’s best OLED technology."

Yesterday, South Korean police officers searched the offices of Samsung Electronics Co. according to a report from Bloomberg. The search comes as the latest episode of OLED espionage involving both industry leaders Samsung and rival LG.

LG Display is claiming that they did not direct the police towards Samsung, rather that the police have made their own determination with regards to the alleged theft. Son Young Jun, LG Display spokesman, "The latest investigation is related to large-sized OLED TV panel technology, but the police have made the allegation themselves."

Samsung and LG are already connected by police to criminal probes from July. At that time, six LG Display employees were charged with OLED tech-related theft from Samsung. LG has stated that the information in question with the July charges was not secret, and specifically did not contain trade secrets.

In response to inquiries regarding yesterday's visit from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Jun Eun Sun, a spokesperson for Samsung stated, "We have no reason to steal other companies’ technology, as we have the world’s best OLED technology."

OLED as a marketable technology has more than enough potential to justify concerns with regards to industrial espionage. As companies rush to bring products to market and to eager consumers, policing tends to lag behind, leaving open the possibility that displays may debut as hot products only to have their production and sale frozen while legal battles play out.

LG Puts $655 Million Into OLED Mass Production

The company expects to be up to full production numbers in the first half of 2014.

We've been waiting a long time now for OLED to hit the marketplace in any significant way and at this point it seems to be inevitable. The folks at LG have pumped over half a billion dollars into getting their manufacturing up to speed and expect to be pumping out a significant amount of OLED sets by early 2014.

As far as exact numbers go, LG says they'll be able to handle around 26,000 input sheets, which translate to 156,000 55-inch TVs. Not a bad start to what could be a dominant technology not too far into the future.

Deezer Music Service Hits Samsung, Toshiba and LG Smart TVs

The subscription based service offers 20 million on-demand songs and 30 second previews for non-members.

Music fans have a lot of options for listening to their favorite tunes, and owners of Samsung, Toshiba and LG TVs just got one more. The new service is called Deezer, and it offers on-demand access to 20 million tracks as well as radio channels. Both members and non-members can access the radio, and non-members can listen to 30 second samples of songs.

"We are committed to delivering a music revolution. Deezer is already available directly via a number of hi-fis and in-car entertainment systems—and of course on most smartphones, tablets and PCs—but we believe that putting Deezer at the heart of the TV experience marks the next innovation for music."

All of Samsung's capable TVs made in 2011 or later will have access to the service, but only in Europe. Every LG set from 2011 on will get Deezer, and Toshiba will only offer it on US TVs from this year.

300 of LG's UHDTVs Have Already Sold

Not bad considering the $20,000 price tag and lack of native content.

Ultra High Definition television may not be something that's common yet and it's not something that most people can afford, but 300 people in Korea have already shelled out for LG's $20,000 UHDTV set. That's a good sign, considering that this is a fairly niche market.

It should also be noted that the 84LM9600 is just one of the 4K sets that's hitting shelves early this year, and if others sell in similar numbers, we may be looking at a strong future for the tech. Samsung's set may be more expensive, but they've only got 77 available for preorder, and we don't expect it to be long before that number becomes zero.

LG's 55 Inch OLED TV is Up for Preorder in Korea – Shipments Start in February

Thu Jan 03, 2013 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: LG, OLED TVs (all tags)

The company says that other markets and pricing information will be revealed in the next few weeks.

The folks at LG have officially begun selling their 55 inch OLED set at a price that's equal to right around $10,000. Over 1,400 stores in Korea will be accepting orders, though there's no word on just how many they're planning to sell. Shipments will start in early February.

LG says that we'll be finding out what other markets will be getting the OLED set soon. It seems natural that the US would be on the list, but the price is still up in the air. Often when products come to the US after an initial run in their home country, the price will go down.

LG president Havis Kwon makes some pretty big statements on the subject. "Not since color TV was first introduced 60 years ago has there been a more transformational moment," he says. "When high-definition TV was first introduced 15 years ago, the public’s reaction was ‘Wow!’ but when customers see our razor-thin OLED TV for the first time, they’re left speechless. That’s a clear indicator as any that OLED TV is much more than just an incremental improvement to current television technology."
