LG is Bringing a Google TV Infused Set to CES

It includes the LG Magic Remote and packs Cinema 3D with 2D to 3D conversion.

Google TV adoption by manufacturers is picking up significantly in 2012. One by one, new devices have been announced and the platform looks like it might be on the way to making the impact it was expected to at launch.

LG is the latest to jump on the Google TV train with two models of Google TV sets being revealed next week at CES. It offers LG's passive Cinema 3D and 2D to 3D conversion and almost certainly includes a few pairs of glasses. You'll also find the motion control Magic Remote that includes a full QWERTY keyboard. LG specifies QWERTY which seems a bit silly. What TV maker is going to create a Dvorak remote?

There are a few mysteries as to the size of the televisions though the model in the promotional picture looks to be around 40". The other big mystery is what kind of hardware the LG Google TV will be packing. It might be too early to expect the recently adopted Marvell processor, but if the deal has been in the works for a while we might indeed see the quicker chip inside LG's TV.

LG Announces the 9.1 Channel Cinema 3D Home Theater System

Tags: LG, Home Theater Systems, Home Theater In A Box (all tags)

The new home theater in-a-box gives you 3D Sound Zooming and a nice wide sweet spot.

We've got to give it to LG, their new home theater system seems like a slick setup. It sets itself apart from the rest by offering 9.1 channels of audio instead of the usual 5.1 or 7.1. Another significant difference between the BH9420PW and most HTiB solutions is that LG doesn't just give you small speakers - you'll get four floorstanding speakers in addition to the satellites.

LG's BH9420PW home theater system offers a feature called 3D Sound Zooming that syncs sound output with whatever's happening in the 3D movie you're watching. LG specifies that this will work with LG Cinema 3D TVs, but it's unclear whether or not this feature is compatible with other sets.

You'll be able to get your hands on the BH9420PW this March, but a price has not yet been announced.

LG Details 55" OLED Display - Likely to Sell in 2012

Wed Jan 04, 2012 at 10:00 AM ET
Tags: LG, OLED, CES 2012, Industry Trends (all tags)

The company will be tripling its OLED production in the second half of 2012, right around the estimated 55" OLED launch.

When we first heard the news about the nearly bezel free 55EM9600 OLED set, we were pretty excited. LG boasted lower costs with a still pristine picture and it seemed like a great proof of concept for future sets. Now imagine our excitement when we found out the 55EM9600 isn't a prototype after all - it's actually going to be sold.

A 55" model is a huge step up from the miniscule offerings of the past and it could go a long way to show whether or not the demand for OLED is there. It's a capable set too, offering a ridiculous contrast ratio of 100,000,000:1 - we're expecting some pretty deep blacks out of this one. It's 3D capable too, which should please 3D fans. OLED sets have impressed us greatly at CES in terms of 3D.

LG's new set comes in at 4mm thick. That's less than half a millimeter larger than the bezel on Samsungs D8000 series - crazy thin. It weighs in at just 16.5 pounds and allows for a nearly flush wall mounting.

One thing we haven't seen yet is the price, but with an expected launch of mid-2012 you can bet we'll find out soon. We wouldn't be surprised to see the set in the $10,000 - $15,000 range.

LG Reveals an 84" Ultra Definition TV for CES 2012

Tags: LG, 3D TVs, Ultra Definition, Droolworthy (all tags)

It boasts four times the resolution of 1080p, it's 3D capable, and it's gigantic.

Take a look at your TV. If you're not in your living room or you're at work, just imagine it. You've probably got a set somewhere between 40" and 60" right? Now imagine what an 84" set would look like in your room. If it was just the size alone, LG's creation would still be worth talking about.

There's more to it than that though. This monster TV is capable of Ultra Definition - a pixel count of 3840x2160. It's LED backlit and also packs 3D video improvement features like depth control, and 3D Sound Zooming for better 3D audio immersion.

If that's not enough, the set also has connected TV features and can use any of the apps on LG's Smart TV ecosystem.

There's no launch date or price yet, but we're betting it's going to cost a pretty penny.

LG Intros New 3D Glasses for 2012

Thu Dec 29, 2011 at 01:00 PM ET
Tags: LG, 3D Glasses, Passive 3D (all tags)

Among the new designs is a pair of clip-on lenses and one designer frame.

LG has announced a few new styles of 3D glasses for 2012 and each brings something a little different to the mix.

The F310 is a more standard pair of passive 3D glasses but with an added curve to better match the wearer's face. It's also 20 percent lighter than last year's model, putting it at just 13.5 grams.

LG's F360 boasts a half-rim frame thanks to designer Alain Mikli. Like the 310 model, these are curved for better vision and comfort.

One boon for glasses-wearers is the F320, a set of clip-on lenses that turn your regular glasses into 3D glasses. It's a really nice new product and will - assuming the price is right - almost certainly sell to those watching 3D movies in theaters and not just home theater buffs.

LG is Bringing a 55" OLED Display to CES

Thu Dec 29, 2011 at 09:00 AM ET
Tags: LG, OLED, CES 2012 (all tags)

We can only hope that this living room sized prototype will bring the company one step closer to a nice big consumer OLED.

If you've been paying attention to HDTVs over the last few years, you're familiar with the great potential of OLED sets. Of course, you're also probably jaded over the fact that we've not seen one reasonable OLED on the market yet. Tiny TVs price in the multiple thousands of dollars aren't exactly exciting.

LG's new prototype offers a little hope as far as mainstream OLED displays go. To start with, it's not ridiculously small like most OLEDs. It's a 55" display - a popular size that fits nicely in most living rooms.

LG uses an Oxide TFT manufacturing process in the making of these new OLED which they say requires a significantly smaller investment than the way folks have been doing OLED in the past. That means that we're looking at a nice step forward to a reasonably sized and reasonably priced OLED TV.

LG Will Build Wireless Video Into 2012 3D Smart TVs

Mon Dec 19, 2011 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: LG, HD TVs, 3D TVs, Intel (all tags)

In alliance with Intel, LG is the first to introduce WiDi into their TVs.

Streaming video from a laptop to your TV is very cool, especially when there aren't any wires to muck things up. You have to pick up a dongle though, which makes things just slightly less convenient than they could be. The newest sets from LG will have wireless video functionality built right in.

Using an Intel technology called WiDi, you'll be able to stream video from an Intel-based device right to your TV. There's no need for dongles or even a Wi-Fi network. It sounds like a pretty sweet setup for Intel and LG fans.

"Intel is planning to expand Intel WiDi technology to various devices to provide consumers the seamless, smarter usage experience," says Hee-Sung Lee of Intel Korea. "Through this collaboration with LG Electronics, LG Cinema 3D Smart TV users could also benefit from Intel WiDi without the need to purchase an external adapter."

Samsung Provides Panels to Other Manufacturers but Doesn't Want You to Know About It

Wed Dec 07, 2011 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: Samsung, LG (all tags)

Samsung has ordered that Australia based Kogan stop advertising the use of Samsung panels.

It's common knowledge that manufacturers often sell parts to other brands, often buying parts in return. That's not something that companies want you to know about though, especially when those parts are going to companies more focused on value than quality.

Kogan, an Australian TV maker, recently advertised publicly that Samsung and LG components are used in its TVs, with the message that a value conscious consumer would be better off buying Kogan than the major brands. Samsung was not happy about this and issued a cease-and-desist order.

Kogan founder and CEO Ruslan Kogan, argues that there's nothing wrong with telling the consumer where you get your parts and that there's no reason to try and conceal the truth.

LG Will Launch a 25 Inch Glasses-Free 3D Monitor in 2012

Mon Dec 05, 2011 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: 3D TVs, glasses-free 3D, LG (all tags)

Slowly but surely, glasses-free 3D displays are getting bigger.

When it comes to 3D, a lot of people get hung up on the issue of glasses. Wearing glasses over your existing glasses, or just wearing glasses in the first place, can be a real turn off. But of course, glasses-free displays have been limited to incredibly small screens.

The DX2500 is a step forward, taking the glasses-free display up to 25 inches. LG says they've solved the frustrating problem of viewing angle by adding a head-tracking camera to the monitor. If you move your head while watching a movie or a game, the monitor will adjust accordingly so you don't lose the 3D picture.

LG's glasses-free DX2500 is out in Korea now and will be launching in the US early next year at a price of $1,100.

LG Internet TVs Get Ads

Thu Nov 03, 2011 at 02:00 PM ET
Tags: LG, Internet TV (all tags)

Well that didn't take long, did it?

People are using internet connected televisions to access their favorite streaming services and play with on-board applications. And whenever there's something that attracts the eyeballs of gobs of people, ads are soon to follow.

In-app advertising support was created by the folks at YuMe, and it's already incorporated into the software development kit that goes out to those interested in making an app for LG's televisions. The first advertiser up is Toyota, who is drawing attention to the new 2012 Camry.

The good news is that it sounds like the ads will have to be placed into applications by the developers, meaning that this could simply result in both free and paid versions of apps like you'll find on smart phone markets. It doesn't sound like, at least initially, these ads will be appearing anywhere except apps that specifically enable them.
