• Time to Catch Your Breath - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide March 5, 2023

Posted Sun Mar 5, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST by

Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, oh my! Sprinkle in some Joan Crawford and it's a quality week. After last week, it's time to catch a breath and prepare ourselves for the next wave. At this point it looks like April is lining up to be another huge month.

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 41 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of March 5th - March 11th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

There are zero, none, nada, zilch new releases this week. Brand new to 4K though is Mildred Pierce (1945), a classic melodrama crime mystery starring Joan Crawford, brought to us via Criterion.

Sony reissues a pair of 4Ks as SteelBooks, and just like before, a Dolby Vision upgrade on each release. First, Air Force One, the action/thriller starring Harrison Ford. And second, The Mask of Zorro starring Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Closing out the category, I did mention Best Buy was spacing out their Rocky SteelBooks over 4 weeks, this week you can get Rocky II.

Next week, the next Rocky, a hard to get out of print film debuts to 4K and one of director Walter Hill's finest.

    Blu-ray releases-

There are no blu-ray counterparts of the above titles releasing this week. Let's just get to the highlights for the rest of the category.

New drama release from Universal with Women Talking.

The Warner Archive has drama/romance Camille starring and Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor (I). Also this week look for a bipoic about Broadway star Lillian Roth with I'll Cry Tomorrow, starring Susan Hayward.

Who doesn't want a Christmas movie in March? RLJ & Shudder Originals has Christmas Bloody Christmas this week. Another Christmas movie with Santa on a killing spree, worth a look I s'pose.

Horror release The House That Screamed comes via Arrow Video (previously released by Scream Factory).

Three more VHS Retro Look titles from Mill Creek, Fear, The Fan and Problem Child.

Anime highlights include Heaven Official's Blessing - Season 1, which comes in a Standard Edition and as a Limited Edition, and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation - Season 1 Part 2.

Honorable Mention: This one goes out to those that want everything Cecil B. DeMille, Kino Lorber releases The Crusades this week.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Warner Bros. has officially detailed the Superman 5-Film Collection for 4K release on April 18th. What you get is Superman I - IV, with two cuts of Superman II. Amazon also is offering the collection as a SteelBook set.

Sandpiper Pictures has added several more blu-ray titles to their April 25th slate, they are The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, The Fantasticks, Kid Galahad and Stanley & Iris.   The latter three were all previously available on the Twilight Time label.

Shout! Factory has revealed several titles for May, in no particular order they are Conquest Of Space / I Married A Monster From Outer Space (Double Feature), The Morning After (1986), The Tiger Cage Collection, Skyline 4K, Brotherhood Of The Wolf 4K, Highwaymen and The Haunting 4K. This seems a little light to me, I really would't be surprised to see more titles added in the next week or so, definitely some Anime.

Paramount will be releasing Deep Impact to 4K disc on May 2nd.

LionsGate is  releasing The Man Who Fell to Earth to 4K Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook on April 25th.

  • Empty Out Your Wallet! 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Feb 26, 2023

Posted Sat Feb 25, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST by

Naval aviators of the 'forgotten war',  Antonio Banderas' best known animated character, a star studded crime/thriller, two more Laikas, Rocky Balboa, Denzel Washington trains a rookie and more. This week we might just need to extend our line of credit or empty our savings account, there's a lot of something for everyone.

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 39 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of Febrary 26th - March 4th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

If you want everything 4K, your video rack is going to add quite a few titles. Excluding the import, there are a total of 17 skus. It's not as bad when you do a break down, but it's still rough.

For new releases, first let's visit the "Forgotten War" with another 'first' in Devotion, a true story about the first black Naval aviator. Partaking in the Korean war, two elite pilots turn the tide in a brutal battle.

The other new release this week stars Antonio Banderas in a reprisal role with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Moving right along to catalog titles, sorted by distributor, let's begin with Kino Lorber and Marathon Man, a crime/thriller with the likes of Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier and Roy Scheider.

LionsGate has a double-dip of sense, the John Wick Stash Book Collection – SteelBook Box Set which is only available at Best Buy.

Finally no need to import it, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre comes to us via the MPI Media Group. Available as a standard edition and as a SteelBook edition.

Shout Factory's next batch of Laika Studios releases is available this Tuesday. Look for The Boxtrolls, available as a Standard edition and as a SteelBook edition, and Kubo and the Two Strings, also available as a Standard edition and a SteelBook edition. Thus far these new SteelBooks have had some incredible artwork.

Last, but certainly not least comes Warner Bros., Rocky leads off the pack with Rocky: The Knockout Collection (I-IV), part IV having both the theatrical and director's ultimate cut. If you are for the SteelBooks, Best Buy is sprinkling each film over the next three weeks, this week you get the original film, Rocky.

Also from Warner, Training Day gets a standard edition, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook, and if you want to import a much nicer version, a Zavvi Exclusive Premium SteelBook. The latter might not be available to ship directly as of press date as Zavvi is making some changes to how they operate.

From Vinegar Syndrome, the general release of From Beyond. The limited edition is no longer available from their site.

Import Friday brings Possessor Uncut edition, from Turbine media.

Next week has more Rocky, Sony reissues two more SteelBooks with Dolby Vision upgrades and Criterion Collection has a classic melodrama.

    Blu-ray releases-

The same holds true for blu-ray releases this week, your financial well being is in danger.

Blu-ray counterparts of the above category first, Devotion comes to us from Paramount and for Puss in Boots, we get a standard edition, a Walmart Exclusive and the two-movie collection.

Our favorite action actor Bruce Willis returns this week with the third film of the trilogy, Detective Knight: Independence, which comes to us via LionsGate. In a different genre, think fantasy/horror,  B'Twixt Now and Sunrise.

From Warner Bros, late 60s animated release The Adventures of Batman: The Complete Collection debuts on blu-ray.

Sony Pictures has the Whitney Houston biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody.

Criterion Collection has Hollywood Shuffle and Two Films By Marguerite Duras.

If you want to see a Western done Hong kong style, try out Millionaires’ Express from Arrow Video.

Anime highlights include a Fist of the North Star feature, Ghost Stories - Complete Collection, Jujutsu Kaisen: Season 1 Part 1, which is available as a Standard Edition and as a Limited Edition, Revisions: Complete Collection and Sailor Moon R: Complete Second Season.

Honorable Mention:  A few weeks ago we saw a handful of 'Disney 100' blu-ray releases at Walmart, which had a special cover art and a limited edition pin. I spotted the same ones (minus the limited edition pin) at Best Buy as well. This week gives us the next wave that includes 101 Dalmatians, The Aristocats, Frozen II, The Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp, Robin Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Tangled, Wreck it Ralph and Zootopia. No doubt the same editions will be at Best Buy and the Disney movie club.

Amazon U.S. has the February Imprint Films titles available on Friday, they are:

    Notable announcements from last week:

Paramount has officially announced the Star Trek Next Generation films for 4K release on April 4th. There will also be remastered blu-rays available the same day.

Warner Bros. will be releasing Superman I - IV to 4K disc on April 18th. It will include two cuts of Superman II. Also available will be the collection, as an Amazon Exclusive SteelBook.

LionsGate will be releasing Plane (starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter) to 4K and blu-ray on March 28th.

Arrow Video's May release slate is pretty exciting, for the US/Canada market look for Blackhat, Blackhat 4K, Hand of Death and The Last Starfighter 4K. The UK will be getting Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 4K as well as The Beta Test on blu-ray.

  • NOT Dazed, or Confused, it's the 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Feb 19, 2023

Posted Sun Feb 19, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST by

From a post-apocalyptic TV series event, a feel good baseball movie, a solid high school movie, Sir Sean Connery as Drago, the original Magnificent Seven and more, this week has a lot of quality releases to consider. And that's just a summary of 4K titles.

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 38 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of Febrary 19th - February 25th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Compared to the past couple of weeks, this week is huge. The single new movie release this week is a feel-good baseball movie titled Running the Bases. Unless I am mistaken, this is Mill Creek's first 4K release.

TV on disc new release is from Paramount with Station Eleven, described as a 'post apocalyptic saga.'

On to catalog titles, Criterion Collection has got Dazed and Confused. Bryan's review is putting this as a "Must Own" release.

Shout Factory has Dragonheart and Shout Select has the (original) 1960 release of The Magnificent Seven.

Sticking with the same production house, Scream Factory is offering up The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) / Slumber Party Massacre II in one package.

A pair of recommended releases (if you like that genre) from Blue Underground with Eugenie (Philosophy in the Boudoir) and Marquis de Sade's Justine.

From Sony Pictures, The Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.

Circling back to Paramount, a double-dip in a sense, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit gets a standalone release outside of the five film collection.

Next week is a pretty big week too with two more Laika 4K releases (SteelBook and standard), Devotion, Puss in Boots, Rocky 1-4, Training Day and more!

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases above, Station Eleven and Running the Bases each get their respective releases.

From Searchlight Pictures, the 2022 drama/romance Empire of Light.

From Sony Pictures Classics, foreign romance/war film Indochine and Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams. From their standard label, 1962's comedy/musical Ring-a-ding Rhythm.

LionsGate's films of the week are The Inspection, The Price We Pay and The Old Way. The latter is a Western with Nicolas Cage. If you were hoping for Bruce Willis, that is coming next week with Detective Knight: Independence.

Anime highlights include Clannad / Clannad After Story - Complete Collection, Giovanni's Island and Love After World Domination: The Complete Season.

How about a little martial arts action with Magnificent Warriors from Arrow Video?

Mill Creek has a trio of collections worth looking at, Epic Showdowns - 4 Action Movies, Sci-Fi from the Vault: 4 Classic Films and Thrillers from the Vault: 8 Classic Horror Films.

Honorable mention: If you are looking to complete a Steve McQueen collection, this week Kino Lorber has got The Hunter available to purchase.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Criterion Collection's May releases have been announced. You can thank me for them adding Wings of Desire to the 4K slate, I literally just bought the UK Import. Thelma & Louise is a nice bonus too, check it out!

Universal has officially announced M3GAN will include the unrated cut, with a March 21 release date. And nope, no 4K disc. I suspect you can thank Blumhouse for that one, we have seen them produce films for Sony as well without 4K physical. Maybe in the future.

If you thought you were going to collect them all and not hurt your wallet too badly, think again. It looks like the entire Disney animated film catalog is coming to Walmart/DMC exclusive blu-ray and/or Best Buy 4K SteelBooks. Additional titles include The Aristocats, The Jungle Book, Zootopia, Tangled, Frozen II, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and The Tramp, Wreck-It Ralph, Robin Hood and 101 Dalmatians on 2/28, Finding Nemo, Coco, Brave, Cars, Up, The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc. on June 13, Mickey & Friends 10 Classic Shorts – Volume 2 on June 27, Iron Man SteelBook on September 5, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Fox and the Hound, Cinderella, Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs and Alice In Wonderland on October 17th. It was previously noted that Cinderella will be getting a 4K release on March 28th via the Disney Movie Club. This one is probably like Strange World was released.

Sandpiper Films is bringing 3 more Twilight Time releases back in print, they are Bulletproof Monk, The Quiet American (1958) and Year of the Comet. Look for these on April 18th.

  • Paging Mr. Spielberg - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Feb 12, 2023

Posted Sun Feb 12, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST by

Happy Valentines Day. What does it mean for you? Are you of the horror or romance genre lover, or even a horror romance? This week marks a missed opportunity of releasing My Bloody Valentine to 4K disc, afterall, we get a Christmas film (Christmas with the Campbells). But there's always next year, or Christmas, right?

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 37 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of Febrary 12th - February 18th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

This week's 4K category is pretty arid. Don't fret though as there are tons of upcoming titles and this break won't last long.

We have two (sort of) new releases this week, first from Universal, The Fabelmans, directed by Steven Spielberg. I keep confusing this film with Babylon, which comes out in March. Maybe it's the cover art, maybe because they're both about film.

The 'sort of' comment comes from the next release, Strange World from Disney. If you want the 4K your two primary options are to get the SteelBook from Best Buy or the standard edition from the Disney Movie Club. This is strange indeed, LionsGate has done this more than Disney has.

Import Wednesday (not Monday this time) is for the edition we should have in the US, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a Zavvi Exclusive Collector's Edition. This may not be orderable, look at the announcements below.

Next week, stunned and incoherent, beastly organ, fantastic lucky number, tidbits of an interval, sleepover gone wrong and more!

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above two titles, The Fabelmans and Strange World each get their respective releases.

TV on disc includes American Gigolo: Season One and Longmire: The Complete Series.

From Arrow Video, Giallo Essentials V4 White Edition. Between Arrow Video and Vinegar Syndrome, we are sure to eventually fill our library with all of Giallo's films, if we haven't already.

New comedy from Warner Bros with House Party (aka House Party 5).

The next 'Paramount Presents' label release is available this week with Just Another Girl on the I.R.T..

Anime highlights include Demon King Daimao - Complete Collection, The Slime Diaries: The Complete Season and World Witches Take Off!: The Complete Season.

If you were hoping to satiate your need for Bruce Willis, you got to wait 2 more weeks, but this week from Vertical Entertainment there is an action/thriller titled Savage Salvation.

Just in time for Valentines Day, Criterion Collection has the 1968 edition of Romeo and Juliet. There was a recent lawsuit brought up on this one regarding the on screen nudity aspect of it.

Honorable mention: Available from RLJ Entertainment this week, Dark Glasses, a film by Dario Argento.

    Notable announcements from last week:

There has been word online that Zavvi will no longer be shipping SteelBooks to the US. There will only be a few going forward but they need to be ordered from the US site. Speaking from experience, I have often received damaged goods from them and have asked if there was a way to pay extra for better packaging, to which they said no. Hard to say what the official reason is, but that could be it.

How familiar are you about the place where everyone knows your name? Paramount/CBS has just revealed that Cheers: The Complete Series is coming to blu-ray on April 25th. Shot on film, this show looks pretty decent on pARAMOUNT pLUS (VIA aMAZON pRIME vIDEO). I must say I will be awaiting delivery on this one. Maybe some day we can get the modern crime shows on disc too, including their spin-offs --- CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds, et al.

Paramount/CBS has added Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season One to 4K SteelBook on May 16th. Another positive direction release. Just add DS9 to the remaster projects and Trek fans will be elated. Also coming to Paramount 4K disc on May 16th, the 2003 remake of The Italian Job.

Here's an interesting crossover -- Warner Bros will be releasing Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen, Part One to 4K and blu-ray on April 25th.

  • 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Feb 5, 2023 - Wa-Wa-Kanda Edition

Posted Sun Feb 5, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST by

With February upon us, we are getting that much closer to the Summer Movie Season. It was rather cold this most recent weekend, were you cooped up with some free screen time? What did you watch?

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 36 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of Febrary 5th - February 11th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

There are two new releases this week in the 4K category. First from Disney's Marvel Studios brand, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. We have got some options with this one, they are the standard edition, a Walmart Exclusive edition and TWO Best Buy Exclusive SteelBooks, a Wakanda Art Cover Edition and a Talokán Art Cover Edition. The swag-induced Zavvi UK Import is scheduled February 15th.

Switching over to the DC Universe, Warner Bros. releases the animated movie Legion Of Super-Heroes.

From Shout Factory, the comedy Bubba Ho-Tep, which stars Bruce Campbell. Check out Bryan's review and then place an order.

From Criterion Collection, a foreign film collection titled Three Colors, which features three films by the director Krzysztof Kieslowski.

A newcomer to the 4K disc category, Lightyear Entertainment has The Return of Swamp Thing, to which Bryan gives pretty good marks. Do check out the review.

LionsGate has another translucent slipcover style SteelBook only @ Best Buy with the comedy/horror/romance Warm Bodies.

Staying with Best Buy exclusives, the first of the 'Disney 100' line is due to come out this week, as an exclusive SteelBook of Encanto. This particular style of artwork has been used elsewhere across the globe, and this set is likely the exact same discs as before, so don't hold your breath for Dolby Vision and BD100 discs any time soon. What you gain from the previous edition is a collectible SteelBook with alternate cover art.

Next week, an Odd Planet, Aesop's guys and how we was.

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above category includes Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a standard edition from Disney/Marvel and Legion Of Super-Heroes from Warner Bros.

The blu-ray category this week is a bit light, here are the highlights...

From Arrow Video, the sci-fi thriller .Com for Murder. And, a little on the lighter side of horror, The Vagrant with Bill Paxton.

New comedy/drama from Universal Studios titled Spoiler Alert.

Doubling back from the topic of Disney 100 (Encanto above), if you didn't get it last month via the Disney Movie Club, it is now available as a general release, Disney 100 labeled release Mickey & Minnie: 10 Classic Shorts - Volume 1. Walmart this week has a few exclusives to offer to blu-ray and the Disney 100 line as well. These editions are similar to the Disney Movie Club exclusives but they also include Collectible Pins. Look for exclusive editions of Beauty and the Beast (1991), Frozen, The Little Mermaid, Mickey & Minnie: 10 Classic Shorts - Volume 1, Moana and Toy Story. The DMC also offers Zootopia to the same line, I wouldn't be surprised to see it offered at Walmart, it's just not listed yet. I wonder if these are going to be online only or perhaps part of the Wakanda Forever display.

Anime highlights include just two titles (3 skus) with Horimiya: The Complete Season, which is available as a standard edition and as a limited edition and How NOT To Summon A Demon Lord: Season 2.

We don't often mention double-dips (this one has had 5 previous releases actually), but Paramount is releasing a SteelBook of the musical Chicago. The artwork is a bit flashier than previous releases, so it might be worth a look. Following their pattern, does this mean a 4K is next?  For new stuff from Paramount, TV on disc includes just Joe Pickett: Season One.

Honorable Mention: Specialty label RoninFlix has an action/horror worth peeping out, it's titled Becky. Not done there, also look for the Jet Li 2 Movie Collection, which includes Fist Of Legend & Tai Chi Master. We are getting Jackie Chan from Shout Factory, so why not?

    Notable announcements from last week:

Shout Factory's various labels have announced (most of) their April releases, they are Envy, Flashback (1990), Endangered Species (1982), New Gods: Yang Jian, Bless the Child, The Jackie Chan Collection, Vol. 2 (1983 - 1993), Midnight Run 4K, The Haunting of Julia 4K and The People Under The Stairs 4K.

Kino Lorber will be delivering Kindergarten Cop to 4K soon, likely late April or early May.

It has also been all but confirmed that there are currently no plans on releasing M3GAN to 4K disc. Not sure if it being a Blumhouse release has much to do with it, but a lot of their titles skip the 4K disc route. Wouldn't the R-Rated cut be an awesome treat for 4K? Maybe the studio will see the demand here and add it before an actual announcement is made, they did release The Purge movies after all.

  • The next phase (of evolution) - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Jan 29, 2023

Posted Sun Jan 29, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST by

As we exit the month of January and enter the month of February, what movies are you anxious to see come to disc? Avatar - The Way of Water has surpassed 2-Billion dollars, which means no doubt it will stay in the theaters awhile longer til they decide on a home video release date. There is lots of speculation on James Cameron movies finally hitting the 4K and HD disc formats this year. Yeah, we've heard that one before, right? But it might be true this time!

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 35 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of January 29th - February 4th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

There is one new release this week, it was already released to blu-ray in August but now we get a 4K upgrade. A David Cronenberg film that is (surprisingly) not released by Criterion, it's titled Crimes of the Future.

On to catalog titles, from Scream Factory, Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead (2004). As remakes go, this one is worth grabbing.

From Vinegar Syndrome, a general release of Road House. Note that the general release has a different package. If you wish to get the premium edition in the linked review, visit Vinegar Syndrome.

From Kino Lorber, the original 1969 edition of The Italian Job.

In the double-dip department, Event Horizon, but in a regular uhd case instead of a SteelBook.

Lastly, from Vinegar Syndrome's adult-film line (Peekarama), a release titled The Young Like It Hot / Sweet Young Foxes.

Next Week, dark cat two, blue suede, more DC animated, bog beast comes back, blue-white-red, temperate masses and Disney-100 begins!

    Blu-ray releases-

This category has been a bit light the past few weeks, but it appears to be returning to normal this week. There is one single blu-ray counterpart of the above listed titles, that would be The Italian Job (1969) from Kino Lorber.

TV on disc includes The Great: Season One, The Great: Season Two and Maigret: Season Two.

From Criterion Collection this week, Bergman Island. I cannot personally attest to this film, but it's got some recognizable names behind it, worth checking out.

New horror/romance from Warner Bros. titled Bones and All.

Arrow Video has a 6-disc box set this week titled The Lukas Moodysson Collection.

Staying with Box Sets, there are two from the Powerhouse Films Indicator Series line, Enter Santo: The First Adventures of the Silver-Masked Man and Magic, Myth & Mutilation: The Micro-Budget Cinema of Michael J Murphy, 1967-2015.

Catalog titles from Paramount debuting to blu-ray, Big Night, Gallipoli and Young Sherlock Holmes [SteelBook].

Anime highlights include Ascendance of a Bookworm - Season 3, City Hunter: Movie & TV Special Collection, Virtua Fighter - The Animated Series and Yu Yu Hakusho - 30th Anniversary Box Set, which you may have to order from Best Buy as Amazon is SOLD OUT (?)

Honorable mention: Kino Lorber is releasing the gothic horror The Asphyx to blu-ray this week. It appears to be the best release of this title to date, do check it out.

    Notable announcements from last week:

From Disney, the classic animated Cinderella is getting a 4K release on or around March 28th. Official word has not dropped yet. Here's hoping they finally adopt Dolby Vision on disc.

Amazon has listed Dreamworks Animation The Prince of Egypt for 4K release on March 14th.

It would also appear that Flashdance is getting a 4K release on April 11th from Paramount.

Arrow Video's domestic slate for April includes The Assassination Bureau, Heart of Dragon and Lovers Lane for blu-ray release. Of their April slate, Naked Lunch is getting a 4K release in the UK.

Powerhouse Films and the Indicator Series will be releasing The Shiver of the Vampires and Two Orphan Vampires to blu-ray and 4K on April 25th.

  • Six More Weeks of Winter? - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Jan 8, 2023

Hope you had a good kick off to 2023. Some of the release buzz in the home video/disc industry is very exciting, we will share news as it goes from tentative/rumor to something concrete. My Disney/Fox wish this year is for them to use BD100 discs when a release merits it, and to use Dolby Vision on the disc itself, not a streaming exclusive. Maybe with the original Avatar supposedly coming to disc later this year, that will start a trend.

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 34 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of January 8 - January 14, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

No new releases in this category this week, but we do have (maybe) three titles to look at.

First from Sony Pictures, not quite a double-dip, how about Groundhog Day? This time around a Dolby Vision pass has been added, and it comes in a SteelBook package.

Next from Scream Factory, a more recent Universal Pictures film gets a 4K upgrade, Ouija. When they decided making board games into movies I was a bit skeptical, but thus far they have been entertaining.

OK, the reason I uttered 'maybe' in the first sentence, from 88 Films, Dragons Forever with Jackie Chan. This one has been inserted into multiple previous weeks' articles only to be removed at press time because it got delayed each time. I did see social media posts with discs in their hands so I think it is safe to call it good this time around and to expect to see it on Tuesday!

Next week, Irish grassland, twice the peril, acrimony of an adult male and Carpenter Steel.

    Blu-ray releases-

The single blu-ray counterpart of the above titles this week (maybe) is Dragons Forever from 88 Films.

Unfortunately, LionsGate this week doesn't offer any Bruce Willis action (but next week is a different story), they do have a comedy titled Angry Neighbors though.

New drama from Universal titled She Said. As of press time Amazon still listing this as a July release, but official word from Universal (and retailer back rooms) does/do in fact state January 10th.

TV on disc includes Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season, Good Girls: The Complete Series and The Man Who Fell to Earth: Season One.

The latest franchise SteelBook from Paramount this week is Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter.

From the Criterion Collection, Imitation of Life, a 1934 melodrama.

Warner Bros' label Warner Archive Collection has Our Dancing Daughters and Rancho Notorious this week.

Special Interest film from Sony Pictures Classics, The Return of Tanya Tucker: Featuring Brandi Carlile debuts to disc this week.

Anime highlights include Boruto: Naruto Next Generations - Set 14 (Kawaki), Himouto! Umaru-chan R, Obey Me! - Season 1, Platinum End - Part 1 and Waiting in the Summer: Complete Collection.

Arrow Video gives us their take on The Dunwich Horror, previously it was part of a double feature from Scream Factory. Not done there, look for a Sonny Chiba box set titled The Executioner Collection.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Shout Factory has revealed most of their March 2023 titles. I would expect an animated/anime title or two to be added, but here's what we have so far: 4K includes Dead Silence, The Exorcist III, Streets of Fire and Wanted. For blu-ray, look for Crazy People, Critical Condition, Dr. Giggles, Razorback and Sorry, Wrong Number.

Amazon already has a listing for the blu-ray of M3GAN. I really hope a 4K gets added to the choices too. I would guess a March release date on this one.

Warner Bros. will be releasing Training Day to 4K and 4K Best Buy SteelBook on February 28. This release is packaged under their Warner 100 packaging.

Disney is also celebrating 100 years. For 4K, Best Buy is offering SteelBooks of many animated releases spaced throughout 2023, as well as the original Star Wars trilogy on May 2nd. BD100 discs with Dolby Vision, right? One can hope and dream I guess. Check out our 4K release calendar link, click 'Show All Releases' if necessary,  then search for Disney 100 to see what is there so far. At this time it looks like their Disney 100 label on blu-ray is limited to the Disney Movie Club and Walmart, but that can't be right, can it?

As always, we appreciate you playing your orders via our links, it helps keep our little operation going.
