GameStop is Holding a Consumer Expo in August
Wed May 23, 2012 at 10:30 AM ETTags: GameStop, PAX (all tags)
You'll be able to check out the latest games, meet celebrities and more... for five hours.
GameStop has announced that they're opening the doors of their August Expo – usually reserved for buyers and other businessy types. You'll need to be a PowerUP Rewards cardholder to get in, and of course you'll have to shell out a bit of cash. General Admission runs $35 and VIP costs you $100, but you'll get access to a few VIP sessions for a more in-depth look at games.
Here's the strange thing. The event runs from 11am on August 29th to 4pm on August 29th. That's right, you've got five hours to try and see everything you want to see.
If you've ever been to a gaming event like PAX or E3, you've probably experienced the realization that the few days that the event is open just isn't enough to see it all. The new GameStop event, well, it just makes that worse. A few lines and your day is over. Still, if you're already in the area it might be cool to stop in.

GameStop Will End GameCube Trade-Ins Starting April 2nd
Mon Mar 26, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: GameStop, GameCube, Trade-ins (all tags)
If you're looking for pennies on the dollar for your old GameCube games, you've only got a week to make it happen.
It's been 11 years since the launch of the GameCube and the folks at GameStop are finally pulling the plug on console and game trade-ins. Starting on April 2nd, all GameCube trade-ins will halt.
It's bad news to the folks that are looking to get rid of their old GameCube library, but it's good news for collectors banking on an increase in prices for Nintendo's sixth generation console. All of those rare old GameCube games will be just a touch harder to find.

European Retailer GAME Won't be Selling 'Mass Effect 3' or Future EA Titles
Wed Feb 29, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Mass Effect 3, Industry Trends, GameStop (all tags)
The struggling chain is refunding preorders of the title, citing unsatisfactory credit terms.
As GameStop is to the United States, GAME is to the U.K. They're the chain that specializes in videogames, deals in used games and pushes preorders. There's one big difference though - GameStop is thriving and GAME may be on its way out.
There's been quite a bit of talk about the company's financial troubles, but it turns out things may be worse than anyone suspected. The folks at GAME have decided not to stock 'Mass Effect 3' based on credit terms that were deemed unsatisfactory. In fact, the company won't be stocking any EA game that's coming out in March.
EA has released information to customers who preordered 'Mass Effect 3' through game, instructing them to reorder the game through stores that will be carrying it.
This isn't the first title GAME has missed. During Vita launch week, Ubisoft games were all absent. A few other titles have been missed too, and apparently 'Mario Party 9' is on the list of future titles that won't be carried.

70% of GameStop DLC Sales are Paid in Cash, Gift Cards or Credit
Tue Feb 14, 2012 at 01:30 PM ETTags: DLC, Videogame Sales, Industry News, GameStop (all tags)
Gamers without access to credit cards make up the majority of those who buy DLC and PC games at retail.
The digital distribution model has a lot going for it, but there's one big problem - gamers without credit cards. There's a huge demographic of young game buyers and most don't have access to credit cards, which means they can't order DLC or downloadable titles through normal means. That's where retail comes in.
GameStop has released some details on the shopping habits of its buyers, including the fact that 70% of DLC and online credits purchased through GameStop is through non-credit card transaction. That means in-store credit, gift cards and cash.
The company says that's the same thing driving PC game sales. Unlike on consoles, there is a massive digital distribution system set up. Still, those without credit cards need retail to get their hands on the latest.

'Starhawk' First Printing Will Have Free DLC, Soundtrack and Free Warhawk - Exclusive to GameStop
Wed Feb 08, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Starhawk, Warhawk, Limited Edition, Used Games, GameStop (all tags)
It's not going to cost you a dime more and you're getting a crazy amount of extra content. This is the right way to fight used game sales.
Game companies are doing what they can to deal with used game sales. They find ways to charge consumers just a bit more for their games by locking content for those that didn't pick up a brand new copy.
Instead of punishing the end user, 'Starhawk' will reward. If you buy the game new when it launches, you'll get a large amount of extra content absolutely free. It starts with the Maw of Despair Outcast Pack, which gives you a brand new co-op mission to play.
You'll also get an exclusive Homeworld, a PS3 theme, the game's soundtrack and a downloadable copy of 'Warhawk.'
That's the sort of content we'd expect to see in an ultra-expensive "Special Edition," all coming absolutely free with the first printing of the game.

If you're living in the right place, you can meet Curt Schilling, R.A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane or Ken Rolston
One of the advantages of having an all-star team on your game is the amount of excitement - and press, certainly - that those celebrities can provide. The folks behind 'Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning' are making the news today by showing up at select midnight releases of the game.
If you're living in Maryland, swing up to Cockeysville to meet Ken Rolston, who was also lead designer on 'Oblivion,' as well as lead designer Ian Frazier, art director Tim Coman, combat designer Joe Quadara and audio director Grant Kirkhope.
In Tempe, Arizona, Todd McFarlane will be meeting fans. McFarlane is the man with the artistic vision of Amalur and is well known for his very cool toys and, of course, the comic 'Spawn.'
Bellingham, MA will host the founder of 38 studios, Curt Schilling, and the man behind the game's world, R.A. Salvatore. If you're heading there, get to the store way early. Baseball fans and fantasy fans certainly will.
