'Star Trek: The Next Generation' Blu-ray Bound in 2012!
Wed Sep 28, 2011 at 03:25 PM ETTags: Paramount, Disc Announcements, CBS (all tags)
Paramount and CBS will be boldly bringing the classic sci-fi series to Blu-ray starting in 2012!
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" will be released in high-definition Blu-ray, starting with 'Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Next Level' - a Blu-ray sampler including the episodes "Encounter at Farpoint," "The Inner Light," and "Sins of the Father" on January 31, 2012 followed by a season-one set to be released later on in the year, and subsequent seasons beaming down after that. Each of the 178 episodes spanning The Next Generation's seven seasons will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p for release in the Blu-ray format and, eventually, for runs on television and digital platforms in the U.S. and across the world. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" will, as fans know, be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012.
"Fans have been clamoring for a high-definition release of "Star Trek: The Next Generation,"" Ken Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement. "Transferring the series to high-definition presented difficult technical challenges, but our team has come up with a process to create true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects. We can’t wait to show fans how pristine the series looks and sounds with our upcoming Blu-ray releases."
CBS is, in fact, returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. And all of the work is being done in conjunction with respected, longtime Star Trek figures Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants."
Suggested list price for the sampler Blu-ray is $21.99.

CBS Nearly Doubles Operating Profit - Partial Credit Goes to Streaming
Thu Aug 04, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: CBS, Streaming, Netflix (all tags)
Netflix and Amazon deals helped CBS increase their income by 97 percent.
Movie studios and broadcasters often point to streaming content as something that will eventually be the downfall of the whole industry. Cheap and even free access to content is a worrying trend for them, but not for the folks at CBS.
Last year, CBS brought in $440 million, which is nearly double the $223 million brought in the previous year. A good chunk of that income came from streaming services like Netflix and Amazon streaming deals.
The secret to working with streaming services, according to CEO Les Moonves, is to work with shows that no longer have value to the company. We have three ‘CSI’ [programs] that are now on the air and aren’t part of these Netflix deals or the Amazon deals." Moonves says that once they're off the air though, he expects the streaming money to start rolling in.

CBS is Considering a Paid 3D Network
Tue Jul 12, 2011 at 01:45 PM ETTags: CBS, 3D (all tags)
The new channel would offer 2D shows converted to 3D
The folks at CBS have been making some moves toward a full 3D network according to people in the know. They've been traveling to cable operators and showing off their 2D to 3D conversions and putting out feelers for a station dedicated to that.
The idea would be to offer a pay channel that would presumably broadcast the same content that's on CBS, but in 3D. It's a cool enough idea, but having to shell out extra just to watch 2D to 3D conversions doesn't seem like something that's going to get people excited.
CBS is reportedly working with Digital Dynamic Depth (DDD) to inexpensively convert material to 3D. Of course, inexpensive is a relative term - pricing looks to be about $10,000 per hour of footage.

Star Trek, Twin Peaks, Cheers, Medium, and More Coming to Netflix Streaming

A new licensing arrangement with CBS adds these classic shows to the lineup as well as some newer ones.
"More and more, people want to be able to access our programming on a wide variety of platforms," says CBS President of Distribution Scott Koondel in regards to the newest licensing deal between Netflix and CBS.
The licensing arrangement brings a whole range of new content to the streaming service, including newer shows like 'Medium' and the summer hit 'Flashpoint.' There's plenty of older content too, like 'Cheers,' 'Frasier,' and episodes from every generation of 'Star Trek.'
You'll be able to catch the new CBS shows starting in early April. Make sure you check out our regular feature The Netflix Stream for all the latest on what's coming to the service.

Networks Block Google TV Access to Sites
Tue Oct 26, 2010 at 03:20 PM ETTags: Google TV, Hulu, ABC, NBC, CBS (all tags)
ABC, NBC and CBS shows are unwatchable on Google TV, even through the internet browser.
At this point, it seems like hooking a netbook or HTPC to your television is going to be the best solution. Google TV holds a great deal of promise, but the lack of support from content providers may make the new product a hard sell.
The problem seems to be that the networks don't want folks using Google TV to watch web based versions of their shows. It's not good for the ratings, and it could hurt their advertising revenue. There's also a concern of people viewing on pirate sites, rather than the network's own website.
For now, Hulu, ABC, NBC and CBS will all be blocking you from access when you pick up your Google TV. The folks at Google are working on it, but don't expect to hear anything soon.

CBS Could Be Coming to Hulu
Wed Aug 04, 2010 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Hulu, CBS (all tags)
The final piece of the broadcast puzzle may be hitting Hulu soon.
The thing that's important to remember about Hulu is that it's not owned by a single company. It's got a few parent companies on top of it including NBC, ABC and Fox. As you can imagine, the final major broadcasting network, CBS, has been less than excited to go the Hulu route.
The Hulu Plus service is getting CBS execs interested though. There's something about a subscription that makes the whole idea more appetizing. CBS CEO Les Moonves puts it this way - "Are we having discussions with the Hulu subscription service? Yes we are."
There's a lot still to talk about, and CBS isn't interested in going Hulu exclusive any time soon. "Our goal is to get paid for our content in as many different ways as we can without hurting the mother ship," says Moonves. "The key here is flexibility."

Hulu In Talks With CBS and Viacom
Fri Jun 25, 2010 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Hulu, Streaming, CBS, Viacom, Industry Trends (all tags)
The company is hoping to have both channels signed up by the time the Hulu subscription service hits.
The success and failure of the Hulu subscription service is directly dependant on the shows it can offer. It needs popular shows that people want to watch, and lots of them. That's why Hulu's working with both Viacom and CBS to secure a bit of programming.
Viacom, the folks that own MTV and Comedy Central, pulled both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report from Hulu back in April, and the site's visitor count has dropped significantly. Hulu wants them back, and with good reason.
CBS, on the other hand, is the only one of the four major networks that doesn't own a piece of Hulu. Adding CBS shows would be huge for the service.

CBS is Getting Friendly with the iPad
Tue May 11, 2010 at 10:00 AM ETTags: CBS, Apple, iPad, Industry Trends (all tags)
Actual content is on the way this fall.
The iPad is a brand new device that’s been incredibly successful. But there’s a problem. It doesn’t support Flash, which is a standard for websites across the internet, especially video streaming services.
One such service is CBS, which currently dishes out a single episode of Survivor and a few other clips to iPad users. If you visit on your computer though, you’ll be treated to a huge range of video clips.
CBS VP Anthony Soohoo says that’s all going to change this fall, when the company rolls out a new HTML5 compliant portal just for the iPad.
There won’t be any changes to the main site though. If you’re browsing on anything that’s not an iPad, you’ll get the standard Flash treatment.

CBS Forms Blu-ray/HD DVD/DVD TV Unit; Classic 'Star Trek' to Lead Title Brigade
Thu Jan 18, 2007 at 04:35 PM ETTags: Disc Announcements, TV on HD, CBS, Star Trek (all tags)
A first step in bringing their TV titles into the high-def arena, CBS has launched a new home entertainment unit to handle DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD title releases, with the newly-restored original 'Star Trek' series leading the charge.
The company's new division, CBS Home Entertainment, will operate as part of the CBS Paramount Network Television Entertainment Group, and will distribute all upcoming next-gen and standard-def disc releases via Paramount Home Entertainment.
With a stable of over 120 current series and a substantial library of more than 2,600 titles, CBS has an extensive and diverse catalog of television programming to exploit. Some of the company's current shows include 'Jericho' and 'Criminal Minds,' both of which are broadcast in HD, plus such long-running reality shows as 'Amazing Race' and 'Survivor.'
The new unit plans an aggressive increase in their TV on DVD output in 2007, with planned growth of an estimated 20 percent. Though no comparable plans have been announced by the new unit for Blu-ray and HD DVD, the possibilities are still exciting for both of the next-gen formats. That's because with only handful of TV releases thus far on Blu-ray and HD DVD, the platforms continue to be starved for television content.
Though CBS Home Entertainment has not yet announced any official release dates for its first Blu-ray or HD DVD television titles, they did confirm that first out of the gate will be the one series most had already been expecting. After being re-tooled in HD for syndicated broadcast late last year -- complete with all-new effects -- 'Star Trek: The Original Series' will finally make its next-gen debut as an HD DVD/DVD combo sometime in the second half of 2007.
"The reason we chose to do that [an HD DVD/DVD combo] is to give us the ability to make high-definition transfers of the show available to people who don’t yet have high-definition players," Ken Ross, Executive VP of CBS Home Entertainment told The Hollywood Reporter.
A Blu-ray release for 'Trek' has not yet been scheduled, although after contacting Paramount, word to High-Def Digest is that the studio remains fully and equally supportive of both formats. So we can expect to see 'The Original Series,' and all other future CBS titles, on Blu-ray as well.
We'll continue to keep you posted on all CBS Home Entertainment Blu-ray and HD DVD release announcements as soon as they are officially announced. Watch this space!
