Blizzard Considered 'Diablo' in Space – Several Playable Builds were Completed
Tue Oct 23, 2012 at 01:30 PM ETTags: Starbro, Stay Awhile and Listen, Blizzard, David Craddock (all tags)
The game would have included customizable ships and a galaxy to explore.
Author David Craddock is working on a new book entitled 'Stay Awhile and Listen' that's all about the history of Blizzard. In researching and writing the book, he's come across some very interesting things that he's revealing little by little, getting gamers ready for its 2013 release.
The latest tidbit from Craddock is that after the success of 'Diablo II,' Blizzard considered making a similar game in space, just as they did with 'StarCraft.' The company split Blizzard North into two teams – one to focus on 'Diablo' and the other to start working on something new. The second team created several playable versions of a game that they nicknamed 'Starblo.'

Free-to-Play is a Possibility for 'StarCraft 2' but not 'World of Warcraft'
Tue Sep 25, 2012 at 03:30 PM ETTags: StarCraft 2, World of Warcraft, Blizzard, Free-to-Play (all tags)
Blizzard says that WoW will stick with leaving the game free until level 20 but that's as far as it goes.
The MMO market is primarily made up of three different models: free-to-play, games that were once subscription based but are now free-to-play and 'World of Warcraft'. It seems that Blizzard's game is the only one that is managing to stay afloat as a subscription model and there's been quite a bit of speculation about whether or not that will change.
Game producer John Levarge says that there are no plans to change that. "We looked at whether Level 20 would give you a good sense of what our game is, and we think it does," he says.
'StarCraft 2,' on the other hand, could end up switching over. "That's definitely an option for us at some point down the road," says designer Justin Browder. "I don't think there's any reason why we wouldn't, except to make sure we do it properly, that we don't make any mistakes, and that we are supporting the fans the way we're supposed to."

'StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm' Beta Launches
Thu Sep 06, 2012 at 04:30 PM ETTags: StarCraft II, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, Blizzard, Beta Tests (all tags)
The initial selection of players is quite small, but more will be added in time.
Blizzard has just announced that they've just sent out the first round of Beta invites for 'StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm.' The initial selection of players included pro gamers, shoutcasters, press and contest winners, so the sampling is quite small. On the plus side, you're still able to get a look at the new game now.
The Beta invites did not include a nondisclosure agreement, which means pro players, casters and press can all record and stream the game as they like. So if you're hoping to get a look at the new units and some of the strategies that come along with them, a site like Twitch.tv is the place to go.
Blizzard has stated that more people will be let into the Beta as the time goes on.

Blizzard Introduces Paragon Leveling System to ‘Diablo III’
Tue Aug 21, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Diablo III, Blizzard (all tags)
You’ll earn stat increases as well as Magic Find and Gold Find.
‘Diablo III’ was a very well received game, but as players complete it, they find themselves left without much to do. There really isn’t any end-game content besides the ability to farm gear while fighting frustratingly difficult packs of monsters.
The folks at Blizzard have heard the complaints and are making some changes for patch 1.0.4. In the upcoming patch, they’ll be introducing Paragon levels, which add basic stat improvements as well as 3% Magic Find and Gold Find per level. You can earn 100 Paragon levels, which means you’ll be able to reach the 300% Magic and Gold Find caps without having to invest in any gear, freeing you up to do more damage and take more hits.
There’s no word at this point on when the patch will go live.

The 'Diablo 3' Real Money Auction House is Now Live
Wed Jun 13, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Blizzard (all tags)
Items are being listed, and selling, for up to $250. Of course, most come in far cheaper than that.
No matter how you feel about the real money auction house that's been implemented in 'Diablo 3,' there's no argument that it's going to have an impact on gaming going forward. Whether that impact is good or bad we'll have to see.
Most items seem to be sitting in the $1-$5 range, but there are items that have been listed – and are reportedly selling – for prices up to $250. Gold is not currently available at auction.

Blizzard Delays the Real Money 'Diablo III' Auction House
Thu May 17, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Diablo III, Diablo, Blizzard (all tags)
The company says that it has no plans to open the auction house for business until all other issues are resolved.
'Diablo III,' like practically all games with an online component, has been off to a rocky start. The game has been plagued with errors and server issues and some that purchased the game haven't even had a chance to play yet. Not a great way to kick things off.
Blizzard has apologized for the issues and is currently working to make sure nothing of the sort happens again, but they've also announced that the grand experiment of a real money auction house is going to be put on hold. The original launch date was May 22nd – at the time of this writing, Blizzard has not announced a new one.
