Comcast is Testing Tiered Pricing for Data Limits
Mon May 21, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Comcast, XFINITY, Data Limits (all tags)
Two possible approaches are being put into place, both of which charge extra for more usage.
Comcast has been under fire recently, not just for its bandwidth caps, but for the practice of only tracking data use for non-Comcast Xfinity streaming platforms. Comcast denies the cause and effect relationship, but the company's most recent data cap announcement comes right on the heels of a complaint from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.
Comcast is currently rolling out two different test pricing plans. The first would raise the cap to 300GB and then charge customers $10 for every 50GB they're over. The second would simply create tiers and put customers into those tiers based on usage.

WatchESPN Now Streaming to Comcast Customers
Wed May 09, 2012 at 12:12 PM ETTags: ESPN, Comcast, XFINITY (all tags)
You'll be able to check it out on your computer or your iPhone, but other streaming devices are not supported.
If you're a Comcast subscriber and a sports fan, you'll be happy to know that WatchESPN is now available for Comcast customers. You can download the free app for your iPhone or navigate over to the Xfinity site and enjoy all the live ESPN programming you like. If you want to access any other way, like your Android phone, then you're out of luck for now.
Comcast customers always seem to get the short end of the streaming stick. It takes Comcast just a little bit longer to let streaming access through, and even then they try to restrict viewing to their own Xfinity service instead of allowing direct access.

HBO Go Finally Available on 360 for Comcast Subscribers – Samsung and Roku Still Blocked
Tue Apr 10, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Roku, Samsung, Xbox 360, HBO Go, Comcast, XFINITY (all tags)
Comcast has finally lifted the block that prevented access.
The folks over at Comcast have an issue with HBO Go. Since streaming content from HBO is already available through Xfinity, it seems that Comcast doesn't see a reason to let their customers access it anywhere else. The app has been blocked on a few different devices including Roku players, Samsung TVs and, more recently, the Xbox 360.
Today the HBO Go app will finally be made available to Comcast subscribers that connect with an Xbox 360. If you're trying to connect through a Samsung TV or Roku player though, you'll still be blocked. It's not clear why one was cleared up but the others weren't.

New YouTube and Netflix Apps for TiVo Premiere Coming in Spring Update – Xfinity Rollout Begins
Thu Apr 05, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: TiVo, TiVo Premiere, Comcast, XFINITY (all tags)
And according to VP Margaret Schmidt, we'll be seeing that update sometime this month.
In a recent Tweet, TiVo VP of User Experience Margaret Schmidt said that she's expecting to see the spring update to hit Premiere and Premiere Elite TiVo boxes by the end of April.
Included in the new update will be a new YouTube app created by the folks at Google and a Netflix app made by Netflix. You'll also find new parental controls available in HD menus – quite a bit less exciting than the streaming options.
If you're a Comcast Xfinity subscriber, you'll be happy to know that the Xfinity On Demand rollout is beginning, starting with San Francisco. DVRs in the area will be updated to support the service before its turned on later this month.

Comcast Won't Count Xfinity Streams on Xbox 360 Against Data Caps
Wed Mar 28, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Comcast, XFINITY, Data Limits, Xbox 360 (all tags)
The company says that the traditional internet isn't used for the streams.
The practice of limiting the amount of content that someone can download is a practice that more and more internet providers are adapting, and one that's certainly frustrating to power users and other people who stream and download more than the disappointing limit.
The folks at Comcast have some good news for people streaming Xfinity content through their Xbox 360 – none of your activities will count against your data limit. Comcast says that this is because their service eschews the traditional internet and goes through Comcast's own private network. This doesn't apply to Xfinity content accessed through a computer though – that's still capped normally.

Comcast Will Launch Xfinity Streampix to Compete with Other Streaming Services
Thu Feb 23, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Comcast, XFINITY, Streaming (all tags)
It's a $4.99 monthly charge, but it's only for Comcast customers, so add that on top of your current monthly charges.
Comcast has announced they'll be launching a streaming service known as Xfinity Streampix this week. It's going to include the kinds of shows and movies you've come to expect from streaming services, but details on just what's going to be available aren't available yet.
The catch with this $4.99/mo service is that only Comcast customers will be able to access it, which makes the inexpensive pricing seem much less like a deal. Some Comcast packages will include the service for free - the higher end stuff of course - which should make a lot of customers sort of happy.
Depending on the selection and quality of the streams, this may convince Comcast customers to drop Netflix or Hulu in favor of the new service. These company specific services don't seem like the kind of thing that could bring the giants down, but they just might make a visible dent.

HBO Go Available on Samsung Connected TVs Except Through Comcast and Time Warner Cable
Wed Feb 22, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: HBO Go, XFINITY, Samsung, Connected TVs, Comcast, Time Warner (all tags)
The service is also blocked by those providers if accessed through Roku players.
Samsung has announced the availability of the HBO go streaming service on its internet connected TVs, letting HBO subscribers check out all their favorite content streaming whenever they want. Most, but not all Samsung TVs can handle the app, but Samsung was not specific as to which cannot.
Don't get too excited if you're a Comcast or Time Warner subscriber though. You'll find the app blocked. Both companies have disallowed HBO Go on connected TVs and devices like the Roku Player as well. The reasoning behind this decision is unclear, and neither company has had much to say on the issue, but we're gonna go out on a limit and guess it's a matter of $$$$...$!
A representative from Comcast was quick to point out that you can get all the HBO Go content via the Xfinity TV app, though that doesn't do much good for Samsung subscribers without Xfinity.

Also before the end of the year, Microsoft will be adding Verizon FiOS TV for subscribers, Crackle, iHeartRadio, TMZ and UFC. In early 2012 you can expect Comcast Xfinity on Demand, HBO Go, CinemaNow and MLB.tv.
