Hide the children and pets! Magnolia Home Entertainment plans to let the Asian scare flick 'The Host' loose to feast on HD DVD this summer.

Though 'The Host' has enjoyed only a very limited theatrical release in the U.S., it has quickly earned a reputation as the biggest cult horror flick the genre has seen in years.

Magnolia says it will bring the ode to classic monster movies to HD DVD on July 24. No specs are yet available, though the preliminary info from the indie distributor indicates a special edition, so we look forward to at least some supplemental features.

List price has been set at a suggested $29.98.

Magnolia currently has no word on a comparable Blu-ray version. However, given that the majority of their past releases have ultimately been released on both formats, a Blu-ray announcement may be forthcoming.

We've added a new listing for 'The Host' to our HD DVD Release Schedule, under July 24. Watch this space for full details to come in the days ahead.

Pssst! Magnolia Brings 'World's Fastest Indian' to Blu-ray, HD DVD

Tags: Disc Announcements, Magnolia (all tags)

Indie Magnolia continues its stealth next-gen release campaign, sneaking 'The World's Fastest Indian' into stores this week on Blu-ray and HD DVD.

The aggressive distributor, co-owned by HDNet founder and entrepreneur Mark Cuban, has been one of the few indies to support either high-definition format. So far, they have released over a half-dozen titles on Blu-ray and HD DVD, including Steven Soderbergh's controversial 'Bubble,' 'Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room' and 'The Architect.'

Oddly, however, obtaining information on their releases has proven difficult, with little news available until their titles actually appear up on Amazon, ready for sale.

The trend continued this past Tuesday, with Magnolia releasing 'The World's Fastest Indian,' an acclaimed drama starring Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins, on both Blu-ray and HD DVD with little fanfare.

The impressive release includes a 1080p transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround audio, and a wealth of bonus features, including filmmaker commentary, an archival documentary, multiple featurettes and deleted scenes.

Like all of Magnolia's next-gen titles, list price for 'The World's Fastest Indian' is $29.95.

Specs for all of Magnolia's current and upcoming high-def releases have now been added to both our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule.

We've also been in touch with the distributor, and hope to have more updated info in the future, as well as complete reviews of all of their Blu-ray and HD DVD titles, past and present. Watch this space...

Adding a new twist to the promotion of a high-def disc format, Magnolia Pictures and Samsung Electronics are teaming up to preview the Blu-ray version of Magnolia's 'The Architect' in select U.S. theaters.

As we've previously reported, the film (an indie feature starring Anthony LaPaglia and Isabella Rossellini and co-produced by Magnolia parent company 2929 Entertainment) is already notable in that it will be released simultaneously in theaters, on DVD, and on Blu-ray and HD DVD on December 5.

To help promote the cross-format release, Magnolia and Samsung will host a series of "One Night Only" preview screenings of 'The Architect' on November 30th at select Landmark Theatres in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Minneapolis and San Diego. Making things more interesting, these first theatrical screenings will be presented on video, using the Blu-ray disc version of the film, and Samsung's consumer Blu-ray player.

According to a joint Magnolia/Samsung press release, the event "will give consumers an opportunity to experience the pristine picture and sound of the Blu-ray format on a full-size theater screen."

In addition, moviegoers that purchase a Samsung Blu-ray player at the screenings will receive an "Indie Five-Pack" of Blu-ray titles from Magnolia Home Entertainment. The pack includes the titles 'The Architect,' 'District B13,' 'Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,' 'Space Shuttle Discovery: Historic Mission' and 'The World’s Fastest Indian.'

If you're interested in checking out any of the screenings, showtime and ticket can be found via the official Landmark Theatres website.

On December 5, Magnolia Pictures will make home entertainment history when it brings the indie drama 'The Architect' to theaters, standard-def DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD simultaneously.

Though Magnolia has previously released titles in high-def that had previously made day-and-date debuts in theaters and on standard-def DVD, most notably Steven Soderbergh's 'Bubble,' 'The Architect' is the first to premiere on Blu-ray and HD DVD concurrent with the DVD and theatrical releases.

While full tech specs are not yet available for 'The Architect,' both the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions will include 1.78:1 widescreen 1080p video transfers plus a director's audio commentary, deleted scenes and a featurette.

Magnolia has set a $34.95 suggested list price for each release.

We've added new listings for 'The Architect' to both our HD DVD Release Schedule, and Blu-ray Release Schedule, and we'll keep you posted when final specs come in.

After months of fits and starts, Magnolia Home Entertainment has at last announced its first wave of Blu-ray releases, with HD DVD to follow shortly thereafter.

Though Magnolia's first Blu-ray release, for Steven Soderbergh's controversial 'Bubble' has been available for order via Amazon.com (and at other outlets) for a couple of weeks now, the indie distributor will officially release the film along with five others on October 10.

Among Magnolia's six-strong first Blu-ray wave are 'Bubble,' the 2005 dramatic comedy 'One Last Thing...' 'The War Within,' documentary 'Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,' and the HDNet shows 'Bikini Destinations: Triple Fantasy' and 'HDNet World Report Special: Shuttle Discovery's Historic Mission.'

All six titles will be relsaed on BD-25 single-layer discs with 1080p/MPEG-2 transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound on most titles (note that 'Bubble' is Dolby 3.0 surround only). 'One Last Thing' and 'The War Within' will feature audio commentaries, though most others appear relatively bare bones (supplements for all titles have not yet been announced).

Magnolia has set a $29.98 list price for its theatrical titles, and $26.98 a pop for the HDNet releases.

Magnolia also says they plan to release their first wave of HD DVD titles sometime in November, though exact dates are not yet announced.

With little fanfare, Magnolia Home Entertainment has jumped into the Blu-ray format with its first release, Steven Soderbergh's 'Bubble.'

Hitting stores quietly this past Tuesday, September 26, Magnolia has released no press info on the Blu-ray 'Bubble,' though oddly the release is currently available at major online outlets, including Amazon.com.

Magnolia previously announced support for the HD DVD format in April of this year, pledging an initial slate of three theatrical titles that was to include 'Bubble.' However, those releases never appeared, which makes the almost covert appearance of the film on Blu-ray a bit of surprise.

We hope to have more details on 'Bubble,' as well as Magnolia's future Blu-ray and HD DVD plans soon. Also look for a review of the disc in the coming days.

In the meantime, we've added a listing for 'Bubble' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Stay tuned!
