'Mission' Raises Bar for High-Def Easter Eggs
Tue Oct 31, 2006 at 01:02 AM ETTags: Easter Eggs (all tags)
A few weeks back, we reported on the increasing number of easter eggs that have begun to appear on Blu-ray and HD DVD disc releases, and now it seems the hunt is truly on with this week's egg-filled release of 'Mission: Impossible III' from Paramount.
Hitting stores as a both a stand alone release and as part of the as part of the 'Ultimate Missions' box set, fans have spotted no fewer than four easter eggs in 'Mission: Impossible III' on HD DVD, with the Blu-ray getting even more with seven(!). Detailed instructions for locating the eggs discovered so far can be found in our in-depth reviews of 'M:i:III' on Blu-ray and 'M:i:III' on HD DVD.
We should note that the four hidden features common to both formats can also be found on the standard-def DVD of the film, which was also released yesterday. The three additional exclusive Blu-ray eggs, however, have not yet been reported on the standard DVD edition.
And while some fans may find the concept of "hunting" for bonus features annoying, they appear to be here to stay on high-def -- at least for now.
The egg frenzy on 'M:i:III' follows such recent egg-infused high-def titles as Paramount's 'The Italian Job,' Sony's 'The Benchwarmers' and Universal's 'Serenity,' suggesting that the studios are beginning to fully embrace the concept of hidden supplements on high-def disc releases much the same as they have on DVD.
We'll keep you posted on all future titles containing easter eggs as they are discovered, and we've even added a dedicated section to all our reviews for hidden supplements. So, if you spot other easter eggs on Blu-ray or HD DVD releases, send us an email using our tips and submissions form, and we'll credit you for the find here on the site.
You can also discuss the 'M:i:III' easter eggs in the dedicated threads we've set up for both editions in our new Forums area -- click the following links to discuss the 'M:i:III' Blu-ray release or the 'M:i:III' HD DVD release.

More High-Def Easter Eggs Spotted

Last week we reported on the discovery of a hidden easter egg in the HD DVD release of 'Serenity,' and asked our eagle-eyed readers to send in any additional high-def eggs you've spotted.
Well, your emails are in, and it turns out that there are at least three more high-def discs with easter eggs on the market, including the very first reported Blu-ray easter egg.
Josh Zyber writes: "'The Benchwarmers' Blu-ray also has an easter egg. Highlight 'Special Features' and press Up 3 times. The baseball icon that appears will take you to a dumb clip of Jon Lovitz singing the National Anthem. This was also an easter egg on the DVD."
Meanwhile, an anonymous tipster reported this egg on the HD DVD version of 'The Italian Job': on the "Extras" submenu, highlight the top bonus feature option (the "Driving School" featurette), then click your remote's top-left (Northwest) diagonal button. A little van icon will appear to the right of the menu. Then click "Enter" on your remote, and you'll be taken to a five-minute outtake reel featuring actor Seth Green improvising a stream of in-character monologues.
Finally, David pointed our attention to this easter egg on the 'Friday Night Lights' HD DVD: from the disc's main menu, scroll down and highlight the "Extras" option. Then click your remote's Left button twice. A hidden 'Friday Night Ligths' helmet icon will appear. Click "Enter" on your remote, and you'll be taken to a short clip of director Peter Berg paying tribute to his long-suffering assistant.
We should note that none of the above easter eggs are HD-exclusive (each originally appeared on the standard-def DVD releases of these titles), but hey, it's a start...
If you've spotted other easter eggs on Blu-ray or HD DVD releases, send us an email using our tips and submissions form, and we'll credit you for the find here on the site.

First High-Def Easter Eggs Reported
Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 05:21 AM ETTags: Easter Eggs (all tags)
They've become something of a dying breed on standard DVD, and so with
streamlined menu navigation on both HD DVD and Blu-ray, there was some question
whether or not Easter Eggs would make the leap to high-def.
But as High-Def Digest reader Phillip Reece recently wrote in, apparently easter eggs have been with us since the launch of HD DVD, and the release of Joss Whedon's 'Serenity' back in April.
Explains Phillip:
"From the Serenity HD-DVD's main menu, highlight 'Extras' and then press
LEFT twice on the remote. This will bring up a hidden Serenity logo, which will
take you to the 'Fruity Oaty Good Time' featurette."
The 90 second featurette was also included as an easter egg on the standard DVD release.
In fairness, this is not the first easter egg content to be discovered in a high-def disc release -- some studios have opted to "un-hide" content that was previously offered as standard DVD easter egg content, making such content directly accessible from the menu of high-def discs, while Sony has included monitor calibration test patterns as "easter eggs" on all of their Blu-ray releases thus far.
But the 'Serenity' featurette is the first true content easter egg to be reported to us here at High-Def Digest.
If you've spotted other easter eggs on HD DVD or Blu-ray discs, please let us know via our Feedback Form and we'll publish them to the site.
