The company has teamed up with Sonic Emotion to provide the technology that allows for the feature.

The folks at Onkyo are getting ready to launch a new sound system that they’re calling iLunar. What sets iLunar apart is its ability to take stereo sound and give you the illusion of a full 3D audio experience, surrounding you with music.

This is accomplished using technology from Sonic Emotion, which started out developing sound tech for large venues but has since managed to scale down their techniques for consumer markets.

“We are delighted to release the new iLunar, which was jointly developed with Sonic Emotion,” says Onkyo CTO Nobuaki Okuda. “We believe we can continue to provide a dynamic listening experience to customers with our iLunar, which features Absolute 3D sound technology.”

Onkyo's new remote apps for Kindle, iOS and Android allow for wireless streaming.

Audio streaming was a luxury feature just a few years back, but it's become a standard on all but the entry-level. The folks at Onkyo know just how important it is and have added new ways to stream music.

Whether you have a Kindle Fire, iOS device or Android device, you can stream music directly to your receiver thanks to Onkyo Remote apps. iOS users get the better setup thanks to the Onkyo Remote 2 app, which allows CD quality streaming and metadata.

Onkyo has also launched a new Bluetooth adapter known as the UBT-1. It plugs right in to the USB port of your receiver and allows you to play music from a Bluetooth device to your receiver. You can pick up the adapter for $59. It's currently available for $49 on Amazon.

Onkyo Creates First Music Service to Utilize Dolby TrueHD 5.1

Tags: Streaming, Dolby, Onkyo, e-onkyo (all tags)

It's available now in Japan, and coming to the rest of the world this fall.

Streaming music has improved a great deal since it first came onto the scene, and Onkyo is taking it a step further with the e-onkyo music distribution service. It's the first service available that gives you lossless 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD.

The selection is incredibly limited at the moment, with just 100 albums available. Your listening options are limited too – you'll need a compatible Onkyo receiver, like the upcoming TX-NR818 and TX-NR717.

"Consumer appreciation of the highest-quality audio playback experiences is increasing," says Dolby Senior VP Michael Bergeron. "Onkyo's e-music service with Dolby TrueHD gives the listener access to 100 percent studio master-quality audio, delivering unparalleled detail and immersion, and reproducing every nuance of the recording or concert event."

They come in at around the $1,000 range and offer 4K upscaling, home networking features, 3D support and more.

The latest receivers from Onkyo were designed to offer the best possible quality at a still reasonable price and include quite a few new features.

The TX-NR818 ($1,299) and TX-NR717($999) are both 7.2 channel receivers equipped with 4K upscaling for all eight HDMI inputs and you'll find Burr-Brown DACs on all the audio outputs. They sport new 1080p menus that give you a Quick Setup feature so you can get your receiver up and running in no time.

The 818 kicks things into high thanks to a dual-core video engine that combines an HQV Vida 1900 processor with a Marvel Qdeo processor that can take you all the way up to a 4K resolution. It also includes Audyssey MultiEQ XT32 and a trio of sound processing modes including DTS Neo:X.

Both of Onkyo's mid-range receivers will be shipping in May.

New Onkyo Receivers May Suffer From Defects – Free Repairs Offered

Tags: Onkyo, Receivers, High-Def Retailing (all tags)

Onkyo says that the receivers that carry the non-safety related defect were made between November 2011 and January 2012.

It's unfortunate, but it happens – products don't always come out flawlessly. Onkyo is dealing with that very problem, and ended up shipping out a good chunk of receivers that are suffering from technical issues. Onkyo wants you to end up with a quality product though, and is offering free repairs to anyone experiencing these issues.

First and foremost, nothing is wrong with the receivers that's dangerous. There won't be fires or sparks or anything like that. Onkyo says that there are two big issues here. The first is that the unit may turn off automatically right as you turn it on. The second is that you may be experiencing noise from the speakers when at low volume.

Hit up the Onkyo Support Page to find out if your receiver is affected based on the serial number. We've included the full list of receivers below.

Onkyo Announces New Entry-Level Home Theater Systems

Wed Feb 15, 2012 at 02:00 PM ET
Tags: Onkyo, Home Theater Systems, Home Theater In A Box, Entry-Level Gear (all tags)

Onkyo is all about the entry level in early 2012.

The folks over at Onkyo are doing their best to ramp up entry-level components with features that you might not expect to see included. In addition to the newly announced receivers, Onkyo will be launching a pair of home theater systems complete with receiver, speakers and a subwoofer.

The HT-S3500 is the lower priced of the two and gives you 5.1 channels of audio. It decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, 3D video, Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit DACs and discrete output components instead of the integrated amps you’ll find on most HTiB solutions.

Onkyo’s HTS5500 bumps things up to 7.1 channels and offers features the S3500 doesn’t. You’ll find Dolby ProLogic IIz for height channels and Audyssey 2EQ acoustic calibration that adjusts your settings based on the room you’ve set your speakers up in.

The HT-S3500 will run $399 while the HT-S5500 will cost $649. Both will be available in March.

Onkyo Boasts High-End Features on Entry Level Receivers

Wed Feb 15, 2012 at 10:00 AM ET
Tags: Onkyo, Receivers, Entry-Level Gear (all tags)

The cheapest features a discrete-component output stage, while the most costly offers up support for three zones, Spotify streaming, and plenty more.

Onkyo’s latest additions to its receiver line may be on the lower end of the price spectrum, but they offer quite a bit of functionality for the cost.

The TX-NR616 ($699) is at the top of the line for these new receivers and gives you 7.2 channels of THX Select2 Plus certified audio. It streams from online sources like Spotify and MP3tunes and even packs video scaling up to 4K if you’ve got a display to match.

If you’re willing to sacrifice a bit of power and a third zone out, the NR515 does much of the same for $599. The price drops even further if you’re willing to accept the 5.1 channels offered by the NR515.

The most bare-bones receiver from Onkyo is the TX-SR313, which comes in at $299. It drops many of the features of it bigger brothers, but still shirks the cheaper integrated amplifier in favor of a discrete-component output stage.
