LG Will Ship Google TVs on May 21st

Mon May 07, 2012 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: LG, Passive 3D, Cinema 3D, Google TV (all tags)

The Cinema 3D LED LCD sets will be available at 47 and 55 inches.

A pair of passive 3D sets are coming from LG this month, including LED backlighting, 120Hz refresh rates and a network connection so you can enjoy all your online content. They also pack Google TV, along with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Google TV, as a platform, hasn't been breaking down the barriers that folks seemed to think it would when it was first announced. It's a much better setup after recent updates, but that initial reputation has been hard to overcome.

LG's new Google TVs come it at $1,699 for the 47" version and $2,299 for the 55". Of course, you'll find them $100 and $200 cheaper respectively on Amazon.

Google TV Patent Shows Voice Control is on the Way

You can also control your set when you're away from home, getting the TV ready for you when you walk in the door.

The Google TV platform is constantly improving thanks to both Google and 3rd party developers. The latest innovation comes directly from Google and will prove to be really interesting if it works out. According to a patent filed with the Patent and Trademark Office, Google will be working on voice control for Google TV devices.

You won't need a new TV or a webcam to make it happen - voice control will happen through your Android phone. No word yet on whether other devices will work or not. The app will use your GPS data, time and date to get you the most accurate information and predict what you're looking for. If you ask what time football starts, your device will show you results for your local team.

Finally, the app will allow you to control your Google TV from up to a quarter of a mile away. This allows you to get your favorite show ready to go before you get home, or as PC World's John P. Mello Jr. puts it, "for setting a romantic mood when you arrive home with a special friend" (or a special sandwich).

Sony Google TV Update Brings Faster Browsing and 3D Blu-rays

Tags: Google TV, Sony (all tags)

A Google TV update is on the way for Sony products and its especially cool for the Blu-ray player.

Google TV is a platform that’s constantly evolving. Each new update brings added functionality – some of which is dearly needed. The latest brings a minor improvement to the company’s Internet TV and a big one to the Google TV powered Blu-ray player.

The less exciting of the two updates is that of faster internet browsing. Chrome will move faster and that’s a nice benefit. Things get more exciting with the second.

If you own Sony’s Blu-ray player with Google TV embedded, you’ll now be able to watch your 3D Blu-rays. Sony has added this kind of functionality in the past with the PlayStation 3 so it’s not a huge surprise to see them update another player.

The Logitech Revue is Sold Out – New Remotes are on the Way

Logitech is getting back to doing what it does best.

The Revue, while an interesting idea and a risk that could have paid off big, wasn’t a winner for Logitech. The company had to drop the price shortly after release and has only just now sold out of Revue units. They’ve already announced that they’re getting out of the Google TV game and getting back to the usual Logitech business – remotes.

The company has revealed that several of its remotes will be getting a refresh in 2012. Among the new remotes will be a follow-up designed to replace the Harmony One. Logitech admits that they’re a little late getting around to making new remotes, so they’re hoping the launch will spur on sales.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see Logitech take such a large risk again in the near future since this one damaged them significantly.

Vizio Launches a Google TV Powered Blu-ray Player and Streamer

Mon Jan 16, 2012 at 02:00 PM ET
Tags: Vizio, Blu-ray Players, Google TV (all tags)

Both will be shipping in 2012 with prices yet to be announced.

Remember when Vizio was a brand that home theater enthusiasts scoffed at or just plain ignored?  This year's CES really goes to show that those days are behind us.  They may not be the highest rated company around, but they're definitely not slouches when it comes to cool new products.

Their latest Blu-ray player, for example, handles 3D movies, boasts Vizio Internet Apps, and comes with a QWERTY remote.  Oh, and the VBR430 also packs the Android powered Google TV platform which gives you access to thousands of apps, the Chrome web browser and a glut of content.

If you've already got yourself a Blu-ray player but you still want Google TV you can check out the VAP430 streaming player. It offers the Google TV platform of course, but a few other bonuses like HDMI inputs with pass-through functionality so you can hook whatever you like up to the streamer and switch sources without having to change the channel.

Both the Blu-ray player and streamer will be available this year, but pricing hasn't been announced for either.

OnLive is Coming to Google TV

Tags: OnLive, Google TV, Cloud Gaming (all tags)

The game streaming service will now be a standard feature on all current and future Google TV devices.

For some, getting games from OnLive doesn't make a lot of sense. If you have a decent gaming PC you'll see better graphical quality by installing the game proper and console owners and PC folks alike will have less lag playing locally. If you don't own a system at all though, OnLive is a nice alternative.

OnLive has made a huge move towards wooing those that might not otherwise by buying games. The service will soon be available on all current Google TV devices as well as included in upcoming devices. If Google TV purchases pick up, OnLive could soon be reaching a significant audience that doesn't have to pay a dime to check it out.

What OnLive has not yet revealed is just how users will be controlling these games. For now, you can check out the OnLive Viewer, which gives you access to OnLive social features. It's currently on Google TV and is, of course, free.

LG is Bringing a Google TV Infused Set to CES

Tags: LG, Google TV, 3D TVs, Passive 3D (all tags)

It includes the LG Magic Remote and packs Cinema 3D with 2D to 3D conversion.

Google TV adoption by manufacturers is picking up significantly in 2012. One by one, new devices have been announced and the platform looks like it might be on the way to making the impact it was expected to at launch.

LG is the latest to jump on the Google TV train with two models of Google TV sets being revealed next week at CES. It offers LG's passive Cinema 3D and 2D to 3D conversion and almost certainly includes a few pairs of glasses. You'll also find the motion control Magic Remote that includes a full QWERTY keyboard. LG specifies QWERTY which seems a bit silly. What TV maker is going to create a Dvorak remote?

There are a few mysteries as to the size of the televisions though the model in the promotional picture looks to be around 40". The other big mystery is what kind of hardware the LG Google TV will be packing. It might be too early to expect the recently adopted Marvell processor, but if the deal has been in the works for a while we might indeed see the quicker chip inside LG's TV.

Google TV Switches from Intel to Marvell Processors

The new chip supports 3D video, 3D graphics, enhancement tools, and more.

"Marvell and Google have teamed up to change home entertainment forever," says Marvell co-founder Weili Dai. ""I believe this is a major breakthrough movement and it's just the beginning of our bigger vision."

At the very least, this is going to change the future of the Google TV platform, giving a much needed power boost to the hardware. The Marvell Armada 1500 HD chip offers quite a bit of capabilities, not the least of which is Marvell Qdeo video processing technology.

The company boasts fasting processing and lower power consumption than Intel's chips. Mario Queiroz, product manager at Google TV, makes a point to mention that the newest Google TV products will be brought to market at "attractive prices." We'll have to wait to see what this all means, but it sounds like we'll be getting a much more capable Google TV in the near future.
