Koch Offers 'Ultimate DVD' Blu-ray, HD DVD Bundles

Starting today, Koch Releasing is offering bundled copies of its 'Ultimate DVD' home theater set-up disc with its releases of 'Chronos' and 'Nature's Journey' on Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Offering up a series of diagnostic tools designed to help consumers maximize their home theater's performance, 'Ultimate DVD' has already sold over 500,000 units, according to the distributor.

Priced at an MSRP $34.98, the two-disc bundle will retail for roughly five dollars more than the stand-alone next-gen editions of 'Chronos' and 'Nature's Journey.' That's a $15 savings off the cost of both discs if purchased separately.

In an email to High-Def Digest, Richard Casey, the producer of all three discs explained the rationale behind the new bundle:

"We are big believers in maximizing performance not just for our releases, but for the systems that play them back as well. Including the Ultimate DVD with our [high-def] releases will hopefully educate consumers on how to properly fine tune their system to achieve the best possible entertainment experience, not just with our titles but with all forms of entertainment media."

The 'Ultimate DVD' bundles are now available at DVD Empire (see links below).

Free 'Heroes' HD DVD Bundled With Xbox 360 Add-On

Tags: Bundles, Xbox 360, Microsoft, Universal, Best Buy, Amazon (all tags)

Universal and Microsoft have teamed up to offer the 'Heroes: Season One' HD DVD box set free with sales of the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on.

The promo kicked off yesterday and is set to run for 1-2 weeks at select retailers. (So far, it has been spotted at Buy.com and at Best Buy.)

Combined with Microsoft's existing "Five Free Discs" offer and the free in-box 'King Kong' HD DVD (on select models), this latest incentive brings the value of all bundled HD DVD discs included with the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on to roughly $220 -- that's forty dollars more than the total list price for the add-on itself.

Meanwhile, in a separate 'Heroes'-related Xbox 360 promo, Amazon.com is giving away 90 'Heroes' themed Xbox 360 game systems over the next 30 days. Sweepstakes winners will receive a special 'Heroes' decorated 20GB Xbox 360 Console with matching HD DVD add-on, plus a copy of 'Heroes: Season 1 on HD-DVD'. Click here for complete details.

'300' HD DVD Goes Non-Combo For Toshiba Bundle

Fri Sep 21, 2007 at 10:02 AM ET
Tags: Combo Discs, Bundles, Warner (all tags)

Answering the cries of HD DVD/DVD combo-haters everywhere, Warner has issued a non-combo edition of '300,' but there's a catch -- you'll need to buy a new Toshiba HD DVD player to get it.

As we first reported several weeks back, consumers buying Toshiba's third-generation HD DVD players will receive a total of seven free HD DVD discs, including two of the format's most popular titles -- Warner's '300' and Universal's 'Bourne Identity' -- bundled right in the box.

Now that the first of the new players have begun shipping, we've learned that the edition of '300' that comes in the box differs in one crucial way from the HD DVD/DVD combo version that was released in the US this past July: it drops the combo disc's DVD flipside.

According to initial reports, the disc's HD DVD side is otherwise identical to the commercially-released version, with the only net loss in terms of overall content being the audio commentary, which had been exclusive to the disc's DVD side (the HD DVD side replaces that track with its own exclusive picture-in-picture video commentary).

Considering the disdain some early adopters have for the HD DVD/DVD combo format (see Josh Zyber's recent commentary, "Combo Discs - What Went Wrong?") we can only imagine these non-combo editions of '300' are soon to become a hot item on the trading circuit.

CEDIA: New Disc Bundles to Accompany Toshiba's Third-Gen HD DVD Launch

With their soon-to-be released third-gen HD DVD players already announced and on display, a series of new bundle deals took center stage at Toshiba's Wednesday Night CEDIA press conference.

Would-be early adopters worried that the manufacturer's current "Perfect Offer" five disc mail order bundle might not be renewed after its current expiration date of 9/30/07 can rest easy.

A new version of the offer will run from 10/1/07 through 2/28/08, with a new selection of fifteen films to choose from.

Meanwhile, fans opting to buy one of Toshiba's third-gen HD DVD players will receive an additional two HD DVDs in the box -- Warner's '300' and Universal's 'Bourne Identity.'

In other marketing news from Toshiba, the company also announced a season-long promotional campaign with the NBC Television Station Group and its broadcasts of "Sunday Night Football."

Designed to communicate the benefits of HD DVD to millions of HDTV owners, Toshiba says the the cross-media campaign will include 30 second HD DVD ads, web sponsorships promoting the format, and special on-air promotional vignettes.

Amazon Bundles Xbox 360 Elite with HD DVD add-on and Seven Discs for $599

Mon Aug 13, 2007 at 07:55 AM ET
Tags: Xbox 360, Amazon, Bundles (all tags)

Sweetening the pot for Xbox fans who may be considering stepping up to HD DVD, Amazon has begun offering a new bundle with sales of the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite.

Priced at $599, included in the bundle is the game console itself, the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on player, and copies of both '300' and 'King Kong' on HD DVD. Add to that the HD DVD camp's ongoing "Five Discs Free" promo, and the deal represents an effective savings of more than $240.

This latest bundle from Amazon follows a similar promotion offered by the online retailer last month, shortly after Sony reduced the price of its 60GB PS3 to $499. That deal included a free PS3 remote, a copy of 'Memento' on Blu-ray, and was combined with the BDA's own "Five Free Discs" promo for over $200 in value.

At press time, there was no word on how long Amazon would be offering this Xbox 360 Elite/HD DVD bundle. (The retailer is no longer offering its earlier PS3/Blu-ray bundle.)

Toshiba to Bundle Three Free HD DVD Discs With Every Player Sold

Thu Oct 26, 2006 at 12:46 PM ET
Tags: Hardware, Bundles, Toshiba (all tags)

Making its voice heard in a quarter where the focus of the next-gen DVD wars seems to have shifted to gaming consoles, HD DVD supporting electronics manufacturer Toshiba today rolled out an agressive new promotion that will bundle *three* free HD DVD discs with every HD DVD player sold.

The offer from Toshiba follows two competing offers from Sony and Microsoft, which are both bundling a single disc with initial sales of their respective high-def playback solutions (the first 500,000 PlayStation 3 buyers will receive a free 'Talladega Nights' Blu-ray, while buyers of Microsoft's new XBox 360 HD DVD player will receive a free 'King Kong' HD DVD).

Toshiba's deal provides consumers with a bit more choice, offering a selection of three discs from three different studios (Warner, Paramount and Universal).

Here's how it will work: consumers buying any of Toshiba's HD DVD players between November 1st 2006 and February 28 2007 will receive a mail-in order form, redeemable for three free HD DVD discs -- one from each of the partnered studios.

The selection is as follows:

Universal:
Apollo 13
The Chronicles of Riddick
The Rundown
Seabiscuit
U-571

Warner:
Blazing Saddles
Casablanca
Constantine
The Dukes of Hazzard
The Perfect Storm

Paramount:
Four Brothers
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
U2: Rattle and Hum
We Were Soldiers

Complete details on the deal are available via PDF on The HD DVD group's Look and Sound of Perfect website

Sony to Bundle Blu-ray 'Talladega Nights' with PlayStation 3

The rumors are true: Sony today confirmed that it will pack the first 500,000 units of the PlayStation 3 with the Blu-ray version of 'Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.'

Though 'Talladega Nights' was announced a couple of weeks back for a December 12 release on Blu-ray, those fortunate enough to get their hands on a PS3 in November will get a copy of the Will Ferrell blockbuster almost a month early.

Certainly, the strategy makes sense -- though Sony is still touting the PS3 as a game console first and foremost, it is also seen as the linchpin in Blu-ray's planned domination of the pre-recorded high-def market. And with 'Talladega Nights' earning over $100 million at the U.S. box office alone, it is a solid hit in which to bundle with the PS3.

The news was unveiled by the company at today's Sony Gamer's Day conference held in San Francisco, California.

PS3 Rumor Mill: Free 'Talladega Nights' Blu-ray to be Bundled with PlayStation 3?

Last week we reported on Microsoft's plans to bundle a free 'King Kong' HD DVD with their upcoming Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on. Now comes news of a possible PS3/Blu-ray bundle.

According to someone who claims to have attended yesterday's annual meeting for EB Games and Gamestop managers, a Sony rep revealed that 'Talladega Nights' will ship for free with every PS3 sold at launch. The supposed attendee's comments first appeared on the forums at Beyond3D

The Will Ferrell hit would seem an appropriate fit for the PS3 crowd, and it's likely to make good demo material as well: earlier today came news that 'Talladega Nights' will be one of Sony's first three announced BD-50 titles, which will pack twice the storage capacity of the current crop of Blu-ray titles, and ten times more than standard DVD.

Making this rumor somewhat more fishy, however, is the fact that 'Talladega Nights' is currently slated for release on both Blu-ray and standard DVD on December 12 -- nearly a month after after the November 17 PlayStation 3 launch. While it's possible that Sony might give PS3 owners an early peek at the flick, a four week gap seems unlikely.

We've reported before on rumors that Sony might bundle one or more free Blu-ray movie titles with some of their early PS3 game titles in an effort to introduce the next-gen dvd format to the masses.

With no official comment from Sony, whether or not either of these rumors are based on fact remains to be seen. When (and if) any of this information is confirmed, we'll let you know. As always, stay tuned...
