Blu-ray Players a "Phenomenal Success" for Sony on Black Friday
Thu Dec 01, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Sony, Black Friday, Sales Figures, Blu-ray Players (all tags)
The company did quite well over all, with increased sales despite a lack of huge discounts.
Sony has been going through a real rough patch over the last few years, but 2011's Black Friday performance is looking very promising for the company. CEO Phil Molyneux says that despite not having any crazy discounts or doorbuster product, the company performed quite well. He calls out Blu-ray players in particular as "a phenomenal success."
Molyneux, who was put into position just over a year ago, says that one of the big influences on increased sales was a new corporate philosophy. "We were an organization that made an effort to ship and forget," he says. "I had to drive a cultural change. The relationship with the retailer is important but the focus on the consumer is paramount."
Numbers aren't in across the board yet, but Sony reported a significant increase in the business done through its online call center and a 21 percent increase at sales in Sony stores.

Black Friday Sales Reach an All Time Record

Electronics are up across the board, with Blu-ray players and Blu-ray discs accounting for a good chunk of business.
Black Friday is always a big shopping day, but this year's post-Thanksgiving sale day was particularly good to the electronics industry if estimates are any indicator.
According to the National Polling Data Group (NPD) over 226 million shoppers converged on stores, up significantly from the 212 million last year. The estimate for money spent by these consumers exceeds $52 billion.
Of those that braved the lines and the cold, 40 percent bought electronics items - up from 37 percent last year. Those items include Blu-ray players and Blu-ray/DVD movies which were in the top three for home entertainment purchases.
Cyber Monday looks like it was good for the industry too, with 123 million Americans making purchases. Last year's number was just 107 million.

Walmart Gives Up 'Arkham City,' 'Battlefield 3,' 'Gears of War 3' and More for $28 on Black Friday

You'll also find some pretty goold older titles at just $10.
The holidays are upon us and that means that it's time to see friends and family, eat a nice hearty meal and then go wait in the cold to take advantage of the best sales of the year. This year looks like it's going to be a good one if Walmart's ad is anything to go by.
If you're looking for sweet discounts on new games, you're in luck. Walmart will be selling titles like 'Arkham City' and 'Gears of War 3' for just $28 when the day rolls around. You can also pick up some good deals on older titles, like 'BioShock 2' for just $10.
If you're in the market for a system, you can pick up a brand new 160GB PS3 that includes 'Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One' and 'LittleBigPlanet 2' for $199. The same price will get you Xbox bundles as well, but they're both 4GB hard drive models so hardly worth looking at for hardcore gamers.

Online Shoppers Happier with Prices in 2010
Wed Dec 08, 2010 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Black Friday, High-Def Retailing, Industry Trends (all tags)
It's a nice improvement over last year, but still a step down from the top.
Thanksgiving weekend was a great one for deals on Blu-rays, players, and other electronics. In fact, it was a great weekend to buy just about anything.
According to ForeSee, customers were happier with the prices this year than they were during last year's unimpressive Black Friday sales. Out of 100 points, Thanksgiving weekend rated a 72.3 from customers, up from 71.6 last year.
Cyber Monday was rated highest for online shopping this year. It's not uncommon, but Cyber Monday's success seems to vary year to year. The 72.5 for Cyber Monday is still far below the 74.5 satisfaction rate it earned in 2007.
All in all, Thanksgiving online shopping prices were better this year compared to last – at least according to ForeSee.
