The New iTunes Edition of Avatar Brings Special Features to Digital Distribution

One of the big things missing from movies purchased online is coming to iTunes

Buying movies online is convenient, quick and - sometimes anyway - cheaper. But you're giving up a few things when buying digital copies, not the least of which is special features. It may not matter for some flicks, but big budget fan favorites require them.

The latest release of 'Avatar' brings some of those special features to iTunes. You'll be able to play around with 17 different scenes and see the motion capture and various stages of visual effects. You'll be able to split the screen up or watch picture-in-picture.

The 'iTunes Extras Special edition' also includes James Cameron's scriptment - a mix between a script and a treatment - a massive image gallery and plenty more.

You can pick up the standard definition version for $14.99 while the high definition 'Avatar' will run you $19.99.

'Chrono Trigger' Comes to the iPhone

It's one of the most highly regarded RPGs of all time and it's yours for $9.99

From the sound of a ticking clock that opens the game to the final battle with Lavos, from BC to AD and from Alya to Robo, 'Chrono Trigger' is one of the most beloved roleplaying games of all time. It blew nearly everything else out of the water during the 16 bit era and completely captured fans with the variety of ending available to unlock.

Today the acclaimed game is available for the iPhone at a price of $9.99. Unlike many games that make the jump from the console to a touchscreen, 'Chrono Trigger' should be well adapted to the platform. After all, it was released on the DS recently, and offered a variety of touch-screen options.

You can pick up the game now on iTunes.

Citizen Kane and Extras Come to iTunes

The classic film has come to the iTunes music, movie, and app service.

The thing about streaming movies and digitally distributed content is that typically the only thing you get is the movie itself. All that cool extra content that comes with the Blu-ray is nowhere to be seen. Documentaries, interviews, commentary, and trailers are something that only owners with hard copies get to experience.

It looks like the iTunes download of Citizen Kane may break the mold. In addition to the movie itself, the folks at iTunes say that the release is coming with "Extras." Exactly what that means isn't clear, but if they're delivering the same thing that comes with the Blu-ray, it would be quite an attractive deal indeed.

To celebrate the release of the 70th anniversary edition, iTunes is giving away a copy of the film along with an iPad 2. To enter, simply enter on the Facebook page linked below.

Apple No Longer Renting TV Shows

You can still buy episodes through iTunes, but rentals are gone.

If you’ve been renting television episodes through iTunes then you probably noticed by now - Apple has switched things up a bit. You can still buy all the TV you want, but episode rental is out the window.

The folks at Apple say that the reasoning behind the move is simply one of popularity. The majority of people preferred to buy shows instead of rent them so why keep the unpopular option going? Of course, this could be pointing to something even bigger.

It’s been long rumored that Apple would consider a subscription based streaming option and this may be the first step in getting that plan off the ground. We’ll have to wait and see what happens of course, but the possibility is looking even more likely after this move.

iTunes Replay May be the Streaming Service Apple Fans Have Been Waiting For

Fri Aug 05, 2011 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: iTunes, Apple TV, Streaming (all tags)

Sources say Replay will allow you to re-download music and videos that you already own and may include streaming content.

The folks at AppAdvice.com have learned about a new service that Apple will be launching in the near future called iTunes Replay. According to the site, it's going to be launching in the next few weeks and will give users the ability to re-download older content that they've purchased.

It's also reported that iTunes Replay will let users stream their owned content to Apple TV and iOS devices so you won't have to worry about downloading your music and movies to every device you own.

There's no word yet on a subscription plan for iTunes music or video content, but that would seem to be the next logical step. If Apple could step in with a streaming service that's competitive with Netflix, there could be massive waves in the market.

Warner Launches App Editions of 'The Dark Knight' and 'Inception'

The app lets you preview the movie and special features on your Apple device or just buy it outright.

Trailers, by and large, are an unsatisfactory way to get a feel for a film. They're also full of spoilers for people that are concerned about that sort of thing. The new App Editions of 'Inception' and 'The Dark Knight' solve that issue by simply letting you watch the first five minutes of the film and bits of the special features if you so desire.

Here's where things get really interesting. If you like what you see, you can buy the movie directly from iTunes. This purchase gives you unlimited streaming access to the film as well as access to a wide array of bonus content.

In addition to the US, the new app also makes the films available to countries that previously didn't have the film available through iTunes. Menus are available in 16 different languages and subtitles are available in 34.

'The Dark Knight: App Edition' and 'Inception: App Edition' are available to download now. The full version of 'The Dark Knight' will run you $9.99 while 'Inception' comes in at $11.99.

iTunes Still Number 1 in Online Movie Rentals, But Down Significantly

Wed Feb 09, 2011 at 10:00 AM ET
Tags: iTunes, VUDU, Zune, High-Def Rentals, Industry Trends (all tags)

Before you ask, no, Netflix isn't counted in the study.

When it comes to internet based video on demand, iTunes is number one. It's a position they've held for a while, but it looks like Apple's service is losing a bit of the market.

In 2010, iTunes accounted for 64.5 percent of total consumer spending on internet video on demand, or iVOD. That's a huge number, but it's a 10 percent decrease from last year, where iTunes held 74.4 percent of the market.

At number two is Zune Video which accounts for 17.9 percent of spending. This is likely made up of Xbox 360 owners who rent movies through their consoles. Sony takes the third spot with a 7.2 percent market share - quite possibly due to PS3 owners renting movies.

It may come as a bit of a surprise that Amazon and Vudu aren't higher up on the list, but analyst Arash Amel says that we could be seeing both services as major competitors in the coming years.

Rumors Abound About the New Apple TV

Tue Jun 01, 2010 at 03:00 PM ET
Tags: Apple TV, iTunes (all tags)

According to sources, the new Apple TV will have a $99 price tag and an incredibly small footprint.

The latest iteration of Apple TV, according to unnamed sources speaking with Engadget, is going to sell for a mere $99. That's right in the traditional range for streaming devices, but there's still a lot of excitement over it.

It'll have the same hardware as the new iPhone, right down to the processor and 16GB of flash memory. And while that isn't a lot of space, Apple wants you grabbing video from the cloud. Rather than downloading your HD video from iTunes, you'll be streaming it.

Details are scarce right now on just what else the device will be able to do. If iTunes is the only option for streaming, the new Apple TV won't be looking much better than the old one, especially with the Boxee Box and Google TV on the way.
