The iTunes app will be available on select Samsung displays later this year.
Samsung has announced plans to bring the iTunes Movies and TV Shows app and Apple AirPlay 2 support to its upcoming lineup of 2019 TVs. This will mark the first time that the new app has been made available on a smart TV model.
"We pride ourselves on working with top industry leaders to deliver the widest range of content services to our Smart TV platform," said Won-Jin Lee, Executive Vice President, Service Business of Visual Display at Samsung Electronics. "Bringing more content, value and open platform functionality to Samsung TV owners and Apple customers through iTunes and AirPlay is ideal for everyone."
iTunes and AirPlay 2 support will be available via 2019 Samsung Smart TVs this spring. In addition, support will also be added to 2018 TVs through a future firmware update (date not specified yet). With the iTunes app on Samsung displays, users will be able to access their existing iTunes library and buy or rent new titles from the iTunes Store, including a growing collection of 4K HDR movies. Likewise, iTunes will integrate with Samsung’s Universal Guide, Bixby, and Search. Meanwhile, AirPlay 2 support will enable customers to wirelessly stream videos, photos, music, podcasts, and more from an Apple device to a compatible Samsung Smart TV.
"We look forward to bringing the iTunes and AirPlay 2 experience to even more customers around the world through Samsung Smart TVs, so iPhone, iPad and Mac users have yet another way to enjoy all their favorite content on the biggest screen in their home," said Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Internet Software and Services at Apple.
