'The Hobbit' Atmos and HFR Theaters Revealed
Fri Nov 09, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: The Hobbit, HFR, 48fps, Dolby Atmos (all tags)
There's plenty of overlap between the two, which means you have a decent shot at seeing both.
'The Hobbit' is kind of a big deal and it's not just because Peter Jackson is tackling more Tolkien. The movie is also an experiment in cinema technology like a frame rate of 48 per second, the inclusion of Dolby Atmos and, of course, 3D.
There are 450 theaters that will be showing the HFR (high frame rate) version of the movie, and a select number of those feature Dolby Atmos surround sound. There are a few lists floating around online, but we found the pdf compiled at to be the best.

'The Hobbit' Will be Shown in Select Theaters with Dolby Atmos Sound
Wed Oct 24, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: The Hobbit, Dolby Atmos, 48fps (all tags)
There's no word yet on whether there will be overlap between Atmos and 48fps theaters.
Atmos is the latest innovation from Dolby and it has been receiving very positive reviews, even if most of the movies it's attached to haven't. That's a bit of a problem – it'd be really nice to see something epic with the new tech. You know, something that's almost guaranteed to be great so you can just sit back and enjoy instead of pick apart the awfulness. That chance comes on December 13th with the release of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.'
One thing of particular interest is that this isn't the only new thing that's being put out there with 'The Hobbit.' The film is, in very limited release, going to be shown at 48 frames per second – double the traditional rate.
We've reached out to Dolby to see if there will be any crossover here, but at this time we do not know if any of the Atmos theaters will also be showing the movie at 48fps.

The 48fps 'Hobbit' Getting Positive Feedback, But You Might Not See It
Thu Aug 09, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: The Hobbit, Peter Jackson, 48fps (all tags)
Apparently, not even all the theaters equipped to handle the higher frame rate will be getting the movie at 48fps.
When 'The Hobbit' was first shown earlier this year, it didn't go over so well. The 48fps speed was unnatural, and those that watched it said that the increased frame rate made effects stand out as fake and gave the movie a TV show like feeling. Apparently, that's become less of a problem.
According to Variety, the movie is looking a lot better now that post-production has started. We've got high hopes for the new style, but depending on where you live, this may be a non-issue.
"The high frame-rate (HFR) version will go out to only select locations, perhaps not even into all major cities," said a source with knowledge of Warner's release plans. "The studio still wants to protect the format by going into a limited release for the HFR version, hoping to test the marketplace and expand the HFR release for the second and third installments."

RealD Has Hobbit Themed 3D Glasses in the Works
Mon Aug 06, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: 3D Glasses, The Hobbit, RealD, 3D Movies (all tags)
They're cheesy and uncomfortable looking, but they do say 'The Hobbit' on the side, so that's something.
The folks at RealD have come up with new glasses themed around 'The Hobbit,' which is due out this winter. Apparently they're headed straight to theaters instead of to retailers, but there's no indication as to their exact purpose.
The glasses are, well, dorky as hell. They're supposed to look like "hammer forged steel" but they look, as you might imagine, like plastic. They also look sharp and uncomfortable, though time will tell.
