Rumor: Sony May Be Done With Videogame Consoles
Thu Jan 12, 2012 at 11:30 AM ETTags: PS3, PS4, Sony, Industry Trends, Cloud Gaming, Gaikai, Rumors and Speculation (all tags)
A cloud gaming provider says Microsoft or Sony will be skipping out on the console race, but since we already know Microsoft has something in the works that only leaves one company.
The rumor mill is abuzz with the possibilities of next generation consoles appearing at E3, TGS and even CES 2013. We know Microsoft has something in the works, but Sony has been straightfoward about the whole thing, stating that they have no plans to show or talk about the PS4 at E3 this year.
A cloud gaming provider known as Gaikai is stirring the rumor mill a bit, claiming that one of the three hardware providers will be quitting the console race. Nintendo has already announced a new console and they seem to be doing alright for themselves and we know that Microsoft has something in the works. That means - if the rumor is true anyway - Sony will be quitting consoles.
It's hard to tell just how legit this rumor is. The PlayStation 3 seems to have at least a few years of life left in it and Sony could be thinking of cloud based gaming as the way forward. That or they could just duck back and use their internal development studios to crank out hits that aren't exclusive to one platform.
It's been a while since we've had a console generation that didn't have Sony in it. Not only would this news be big news for Microsoft it could be big news for any other company that might want to create a game console - there just might be an open spot on the market.
We're treating this as nothing more than rumor and speculation for now, but you can bet this is a development we'll be following closely.

Electronic Frontier Foundation Seeks to Protect Jailbreaking and Modding

If you own a device, they reason, you should be able to do anything you want with it.
Copyright infringement and pirated software are big concerns for game companies and those issues have been part of the driving force towards increasingly locked up systems. The PS3, for example, shipped with Linux support which was pulled due to "security concerns."
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) doesn't think this is fair to the consumer, suggesting that if someone owns a piece of hardware they should be able to do whatever they like with that hardware. The EFF says that this rule doesn't only affect consumers - it's a limiting restriction for indie developers who would create "copyrightable systems and software that would expand the marketplace for these devices and promote the progress of science and the useful arts in these areas."
The EFF seeks to make jailbreaking and otherwise modifying consoles and other devices legal. They say that bypassing restrictions for the purpose of playing homebrew games or add functionality shouldn't be something that console manufacturers can sue over.

'Uncharted 3' Reviews Hit the Net - Surprise, it's Great
Tue Oct 25, 2011 at 09:30 AM ETTags: PS3, Uncharted (all tags)
The lowest rating, and the one that fans are of course raving about, is an eight out of ten.
When a triple-A sequel based on a triple-A game that got crazy good reviews, there's little question about what the response will be. Only in rare cases, or after the game gets overdone like the 'Tony Hawk' series, does a poor rating show up.
Fans of Nathan Drake and the half-tucked shirt will be happy to know that reviews are glowing for the latest installment of the series. 'Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception,' at the time of this writing anyway, has a Metacritic score of 94 out of 100. Normally we'd tell you to take Metacritic's review aggregation system with a grain of salt, but when things are unanimous it's hard to argue.
If you're a PlayStation 3 owner and you've somehow not played any of the 'Uncharted' games yet, you'll want to get on this one, if just to improve your videogame literacy. If you've played the past 'Uncharted' titles you'll want to get on this one because, well, it's 'Uncharted.'
It's Official - Ezio from 'Assassin's Creed' Will be Playable in 'SoulCalibur V'
Thu Oct 20, 2011 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Assassin's Creed, PS3, Xbox 360 (all tags)
'SoulCalibur' is getting a little taste of everyone's favorite Italian assassin when it his January 31st.
The newest trailer for 'SoulCalibur V' reveals something very interesting about the game. We've already seen plenty of gameplay and we know all about the new systems in place, but today we finally get a glimpse of this version's hidden character.
'Assassin's Creed' fans will be happy to hear that this guest is none other than Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the main character in 'Assassin's Creed II' and the games that followed it up. His appearance is spot on of course, and his move set looks to be really similar to his attacks in the 'Assassin's Creed' games.
As far as guest characters for 'SoulCalibur,' this is one that wins out a bit by making sense. Or making more sense than others. Yoda, Link and Spawn were all cool, but they don't exactly fit in with the look and feel of the game. Ezio, on the other hand, fits in nicely.
You can get your hands on 'SoulCalibur V' and start backstabbing your friends on January 31st. It's available for preorder on Amazon now.

Latest PS3 model to be Slightly Lighter and Greener
Tue Jun 21, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Sony, PlayStation 3, PS3, High-Def Retailing, Industry Trends (all tags)
Continuing its evolution in the form of model number "CECH-3000B," an updated version of the PlayStation 3 will start shipping as soon as the current sock is depleted (according to Sony, beginning as early as this month). Though pricing should remain unchanged, the charcoal black, 320 Gb CECH-3000B will see a reduction in both power consumption (230W to 200W) and weight (3.0kg to 2.6kg).
Though detailed pictures have yet to surface, there have been rumors that there could be some minor exterior modifications as well to this updated PS3 Slim. Those include removing LED lamps and adjustments to certain external buttons such as Power and Eject. We'll have to keep our eyes peeled so see if these changes are actually noticeable. If any of you find yourselves with a CECH-3000B (or later) model PS3 in the next few months, hit up the forums and let us know what you think!

Sony's PlayStation 3 Hits 50 Million in Worldwide Sales
Wed Apr 20, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: PlayStation 3, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray Players, High-Def Retailing, Industry Trends, 3D, PS3 (all tags)
The Move controller has done well too, coming in at a surprising 8 million.
When the PS3 first launched, sales were slow, systems sat on shelves and people balked at the high price. Now, a few price drops later and after the release of a new slimmer model, the PS3 is neck-and-neck with the Xbox 360 to be the most popular HD console on the market.
Part of the reason for the popularity of the system, and the primary reason for many buyers, is that the PS3 can act as not just a Blu-ray player, but a 3D Blu-ray player. It's updated regularly, it has Wi-Fi capabilities and access to streaming video sources. Oh, and it plays PS3 games too.
50 million PS3s sold means that there are 50 million Blu-ray players in houses that might otherwise not have upgraded. Possibly more significant in the coming years, it also means 50 million 3D capable Blu-ray players.

Hulu Plus Officially Unveiled
Wed Jun 30, 2010 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Hulu, PS3, Streaming (all tags)
It's $9.99 a month, it's in HD and it's coming to almost every device you can think of.
It's official, Hulu Plus is on the way and it's looking pretty good.
To start with, most of the rumors we've heard are true. There are still ads, but there will be less of them. You'll get access to a back catalog of old shows and full season runs of several current shows.
You'll be able to get Hulu Plus on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and watch it over WiFi or 3G. You'll also be able to get the service on your Samsung HDTV, including an exclusive preview. This fall, both Vizio and Sony TVs and Blu-ray players will have access to the service.
The PS3 is the first game console to get Hulu Plus, and one of the first Blu-ray players, as the service hits PlayStations this July. As for the Xbox 360, it'll get Hulu Plus in early 2011.
The service will launch soon, but there's no official date yet. You can sign up for a preview of the new service at Hulu's website.

Sony Unveils a Soundbar Aimed at PS3 Users
Mon Jun 21, 2010 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Sony, PS3, Soundbar (all tags)
But, you know, there's no reason you couldn't use it for listening to other things too.
The CECH-ZVS1 is a soundbar that's being marketed directly to PS3 owners, which seems like a really strange idea. Most soundbars and home theater systems are aimed at the general populous, but this one's got one specific target in mind.
For the most part, it's not a bad looking bar. For $200, you get a pair of 50mm speakers and a pair of 90mm speakers to cover the main range of sound, while a total of six speakers, four of which are passive, pick up the bass.
It decodes Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG-2 and Linear PCM two-channel audio, and you can hook your system in via analog or digital optical ports.
The CECH-ZVS1 has two features – Night Mode and Dialog Mode – that are designed to keep voices in games and movies audible while at low volumes.
Sony's new soundbar will be available this fall.
