Wanna send a 720p signal up to 30 feet with HDAiR?
Altona Technologies has partnered up with Wisair to create their new wireless USB to HDMI device. Using resources from both companies, they’ve created the HDAiR, which is capable of sending and receiving a wireless USB signal up to 30 feet and converting it to either VGA or HDMI. Picture qualities of up to 720p or 1440x1200 are possible, but sadly no 1080p yet.
Marketing Director Christopher Bundy said of the HDAiR “We believe this product is a great place to start; we plan to build on the idea, giving users as many connection options as possible”

Lite-on’s $59 Blu-ray Drive
Wed Jul 15, 2009 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Lite-on, HD Gear, Industry Trends (all tags)
Blu-ray just keeps getting cheaper
It’s official, we’re not buying that “Blu-ray is too expensive” excuse anymore. Sure, expensive Blu-ray players exist; they’re for people that know why they’re expensive and are willing to pay the premium. For the rest of consumer America, there’s the Lite-on internal Blu-ray drive.
It’s not the fanciest thing in the world, and a lot of the video quality will be dependent on your computer. The drive doesn’t automatically make everything high def, you need to have a rig that can handle the appropriate resolution, but it’s not a bad option.
The drive has an 8x read speed, a 250ms access time, and comes with Power DVD 8, and is available on electronics websites everywhere.

Sharp Unveils Aquos LED LCD TV Lineup
Wed Jul 08, 2009 at 03:00 PM ETTags: Sharp, Product Announcement, HD Gear, LED (all tags)
Sharp is aiming its newest LED-backlit LCD TVs at a more mainstream market.
The LE700 Aquos LED series includes 32-inch to 53-inch screen sizes with prices ranging from $1,100 to $2,800.
For the time being, this new line will replace the XS1 LED LCD TV line, and the new white LED technology in the LED700 will replace the RGB LED technology found in this more expensive line. These new TVs feature 1080p resolution, 120Hz framerate and 4ms response time. The addition of the LED backlight makes these new TVs more energy-efficient, produce more uniform lighting, and deeper black levels.
Along with these LED TVs, Sharp will soon be producing larger numbers of large-screen LCDs. The E77 Aquos LCD TV series will get a 60-inch and a 65-inch screen lineup, using CCFL technology to make the pricing more competitive.

Toshiba Finally Considering Blu-Ray
Wed Jul 08, 2009 at 01:00 PM ETTags: Toshiba, Industry Trends, HD Gear (all tags)
Former HD-DVD champions Toshiba are finally talking out loud about making the jump that so many have already made.
According to Nikkei, a provider of Japanese business news, Toshiba’s president Atsutoshi Nishida is considering producing Blu-Ray players. “It makes no sense to decide not to enter the Blu-Ray market simply because we lost the DVD-format war.” said Nishida. “We cannot change the fact that we lost, but we would like to keep our options open.”
While there is still competition from streaming services, it’s clear that Blu-Ray is the way to go in a physical media format, and it really seems like bad business not to have something on the market. Just what Nishida means by keeping their options open is unclear, but expect a big announcement from Toshiba in the near future.

A Plasma You Don’t Need At A Price You Probably Can’t Afford
Tue Jul 07, 2009 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Bang & Olufsen, Industry Trends, HD Gear (all tags)
Coming in at right around $100,000, Bang & Olufsen’s 103” plasma is an exercise in excess.
Exclusive to Selfridge’s of London, the new Bang and Olufsen Beovision plasma is the most unnecessarily opulent television on the market coming in at £62,500, or about $100,000 USD. By comparison, that’s the same price as a fleet of five 2010 Ford Mustangs, or one hundred and forty-two of Philips’ new theatrical aspect ratio Cinema televisions.
So what does that get you? The Beovision 4-103 is a full HD display weighing in at over five hundred pounds. It not only detects what type of media is being played on it so that it can adjust appropriately, it will also detect the color of your walls, and the light in your room to ensure the best possible picture. Adding to that is a built in color manager that acts like “Anti-wrinkle cream for your TV”.
Of course, that price tag only covers the TV, tack on another $50k for speakers, $20k for installation, not to mention additional costs for the stand and mount. So maybe you’ll never be able to afford this, but if you go hang out at Selfridge’s, you might be able to make friends with someone who can.

Sharp’s New Five Color LCD Display Faithfully Renders Real World Images
Tue Jul 07, 2009 at 01:00 PM ETTags: Sharp, Product Announcements, HD Gear, Hardware (all tags)
In the quest for the ultimate picture quality, it was only a matter of time before an LCD manufacturer added cyan and yellow into the mix.
According to a press release issued by the company, their five-primary-color LCD is able to accurately reproduce over 99% of colors. Formerly difficult to render colors such as the golden yellow of brass instruments, the emerald blue of the sea and crimson red of roses are now able to be created on the screen without issue.
At the moment the technology is focused on industrial uses such as digital archiving and remote medical care, but Sharp is hard at work making the display cost efficient enough for practical applications. We’ll certainly be waiting with baited breath for the day this technology is available to consumers.
