    The Little Mermaid (2023) backdrop

There is little doubt that Disney's live-action release of The Little Mermaid will dominate the charts this week, but there are plenty of other catalog and semi-new release upgraded titles to choose from as well.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 16 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of September 17th - September 23rd, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

As mentioned on the lead-in, Disney's live-action release of The Little Mermaid will dominate the charts this week, where will you be buying yours? Disney is following their strange Strange World model on this one again, which means the standard edition release is presently a Disney Movie Club Exclusive until some date further out, Cinderella was a DMC exclusive for four months, Strange World still is. Fret not though, there are other options available (just like Strange World had), look for either/both a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook Edition as well as a Walmart Exclusive Edition. Once again, absent from this category is a Target Exclusive Edition. Back in the day, their gallery books and art cards were something to look forward to. Hello, Target, are you listening?

4K upgrades for somewhat new titles, first from Universal Cocaine Bear gets 4K physical release. You're welcome by the way! I did not think this would get a domestic release so I imported it. Based on the source material, your biggest bang will come from the HDR aspect of it.

And LionsGate and A24's Fall gets a Best Buy Exclusive 4K SteelBook as well.

Whether you file this under B or under L on your video wall, Sony releases a SteelBook of Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon. I go with L, there was no Bruce Lee movie or any other film to be confused with here.

From Warner Bros, William Friedkin's The Exorcist gets two minimalist releases with a Standard Edition and a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook Edition. Again, the UK gets far superior editions with much better cover arts. Can someone from Warner Bros please explain the US strategy here? Hideous covers, minimal special features, no swag.

From Shout! Factory, The Lost City of Z.

Before The Ring, there was Ringu (Japan), and Arrow Video has it in 4K this week. You can also opt for an Arrow Store Exclusive Edition if you wish.

And in closing the 4K category this week, The Trial (1962) gets a Criterion Collection release this week.

Next week, another Disney repeat with Elemental getting the same type 4K releases as Strange World and The Little Mermaid, Natural Born, Jack Ryan, Carlito, Psycho and Wicker Man imports and more.

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the 4K titles above includes The Little Mermaid, available as a standard edition, a two-film collection, and Criterion also offers up a blu-ray of The Trial (1962).

We get to recharge our wallets in the blu-ray category this week, next week though is a very different story.

A drama/romance from LionsGate titled Past Lives is available this week.

Anime highlights include AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline: The Complete Season, Girls Und Panzer (TV Series + OVA) Collection and Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World - Season 2, available as a Standard Edition and a Limited Edition.

Is this one so bad it's good? Gravitas Ventures is releasing Slotherhouse to audiences this week. Am I steering you wrong to even consider this one?

Honorable Mention: Mill Creek offers Director Spotlight: Kevin MacDonald which includes State of Play and Black Sea. Both these films have been out of print for awhile and considerably more expensive to purchase.

Next week, look out, a very active week for the blu-ray category.

    Notable announcements from last week:

No major announcements per se, but we do have something to cover. Check out our disc round up summary for more fun stuff.

The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection Vol. 3 will be released October 31.

StudioCanal (UK) will have Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai in 4K on October 23rd. No word on a US release yet but it's likely coming, just from which label?

  • Black Hawk Down & The Guns of Navarone Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBooks Landing November 7

Posted Tue Sep 12, 2023 at 09:34 AM PDT by

Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down and J. Lee Thompson's The Guns of Navarone are both returning to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in limited edition collector's SteelBooks on November 7. Both releases have also received a Dolby Vision upgrade.

From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (The Martian) and renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pearl Harbor) comes the gripping true story about bravery, camaraderie and the complex reality of war.

BLACK HAWK DOWN stars an exceptional cast including Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Eric Bana. In 1993, an elite group of American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers are sent to Somalia on a critical mission to capture a violent warlord whose corrupt regime has led to the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis. When the mission goes quickly and terribly wrong, the men find themselves outnumbered and literally fighting for their lives.

High-Def Digest Shopping Guide September 10th

This week we have the opportunity to purchase a pair of Second Sight 'fat-packs', another MVD 'Laservision' title with Ghoulies, a couple of decent catalog 4K upgrades, another Criterion Collection release and an animated Batman movie. We do get a minor reprieve with just a few titles to pick from, but there are still a few that are quite worthy of a purchase.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 15 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of September 10th - September 16th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases -

Import Monday begins with a couple of Second Sight 'fat-packs' that were delayed from a couple of weeks ago. The cause of the delay was to correct a technical issue. Although released in the US market, it's worthy mentioning Second Sight's release of David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future. You get the usual Second Sight goodness,  a snazzy cover art rigid slipcase, some art cards and a book.

But wait there's more.... The 2015 horror/thriller It Follows also get a similar style release. Amazon UK has sold out on this one, and Zavvi does not ship to the US, we have updated the link to DiabolikDVD. Because this one did not get a domestic 4K release, so we have listed a standard edition as well.

And moving on to Domestic Tuesday, MVD's Laservision Collection spine #2 releases this week, which would be Ghoulies. They are trying hard to secure Ghoulies 2 for 4K as well and have even saved spine #3 for it. Wouldn't hold my breath too much, but ya never know.

Look for Batman: Mask of the Phantasm from Warner Bros. This one comes as a standard edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive Edition.

We already had Kick-Ass, now it's time for Kick-Ass 2 from Universal, which is available as a standard edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook.

Sticking with Universal, Shrek the Third gets a 4K upgrade. No SteelBook on this one either.

From Paramount Pictures, Kiss The Girls with Morgan Freeman gets a 4K upgrade as well.

     From the Criterion Collection, Walkabout.

Closing out the category with a double-dip from Paramount, a SteelBook release for the recent film Smile.

Next week we see an uptick of titles with The Little Mermaid (2023), a couple of recent Universal titles with a 4K upgrade, and more.

    Blu-ray releases-

Because the 4K category is mostly titles that have been release to blu-ray already in the past, the only new SKU to come out as a blu-ray counterpart this week is MVD's release of Ghoulies, but as part of the Rewind Collection.

Also from MVD, Ghoulies II gets a new Rewind Collection release too.

From Warner Bros, 2023 drama/sports film titled Air.

New horror from LionsGate with Cobweb. And more LionsGate, the 2023 comedy Joy Ride also debuts this week.

How about some classic disaster movies? Shout Factory releases a box set titled Irwin Allen: Master of Disaster Collection.  When I think disaster movies, I think Ernest Borgnine, and he is in this set.

Anime highlight includes just One Piece: Season Thirteen - Voyage Three.

TV on disc this week includes Poker Face: Season 1 and The Walking Dead: Dead City - Season One.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Shout Factory has revealed their November releases. Titles include Chopper, Death Wish (2018) 4K, Fargo 4K, Farscape - The Complete Series, The Police Academy Collection (1-7), Silver Bullet 4K, The Sonny Chiba Collection: Volume 2, Surviving the Game and Tales from the Darkside: The Movie 4K. I have questions, but hey, it's a nice slate.

Universal's next two "Essentials Collection" releases are Animal House 4K and Schindler's List 4K, with a street date of 10/31.

  • My Spidey Senses Have Detected a 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide - September 3, 2023

Posted Sun Sep 3, 2023 at 09:00 AM PDT by
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Sony Pictures

Welcome to September. That could mean a lot of things, but since we generally talk video, what it means is a general increases in volume. This week we could nab the latest Spider-Man, catalog titles like Night of the Comet, Sleepy Hollow, and more.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 14 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of September 3rd - September 9th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Import Monday begins with a pair of swag-filled editions that cause our BP to go up when we think about them because time and time again the US market gets passed over for these awesome editions. Dubbed Vault 005, The Shawshank Redemption and Vault 006, Jaws, these are editions many of us would love to see on our video racks. Universal has released a couple of "Essentials Collections" in the US, and hopefully we have all bought them up, right?

There is one new release this week, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. For an animated movie, it did pretty well at the box office, as did its predecessor. This one is available as a Standard Edition, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook and as a Two-Film Collection.

On to catalog titles, Matilda dons a spiffy SteelBook from Sony Pictures.

From Shout/Scream Factory, Night of the Comet gets a 4K upgrade. Having recently watched the blu-ray, I am eager to see what it looks like now!

I am sure this one will appease lots of viewers, The Princess Bride gets the Criterion 4K treatment.

Heads will roll with this pair of releases of Sleepy Hollow from Paramount Pictures. Available as a Standard Edition and as a Limited Edition SteelBook. The SteelBook is out of stock on Amazon, so you will probably have to seek elsewhere or hope they allocate more once street date hits.

On to a couple of double-dips, and they're all SteelBooks at that. First from Disney, a "Disney 100" edition of Iron Man.

And lastly, SteelBook releases of The Expendables, The Expendables 2 and The Expendables 3. I personally love how these ones look.

Next week, Second Sight's fat-pack UK releases of Crimes of the Future and It Follows, animated Batman, another MVD "Laservision" title, and more.

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above releases includes just one title, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and just like the 4K category, multiple options. Available as a Standard Edition, a Target Exclusive Fan Edition, a Walmart Exclusive SteelBook and just like above, a two-film collection. If you missed out on the first film,  Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse [SteelBook], a reprint is available as well.

Star Trek: Picard - The Final Season is available as a Standard Edition and a Limited SteelBook from CBS/Paramount. As this is the 'Final' Season, also look for Star Trek: Picard - The Complete Series.

If the Arrow Academy label were still a thing, I'm reasonably sure that Borsalino would be under that label. Either way, it's available this week, enjoy.

Harley Quinn: The Complete Third Season is available from Warner Bros. this week.

Anime highlights this week include Call of the Night: Complete Collection, The Girl from the Other Side and Shinobi no Ittoki: The Complete Season.

Sandpiper reissues Clambake starring Elvis Presley.

Honorable mention horror from Synapse Films, Black Circle.

Imprint Films' August releases become available at Amazon US on Friday:

    Notable announcements from last week:

Disney has revealed they will be releasing the classic animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to 4K disc on October 10th. A "Disney 100" branded SteelBook is also in the mix, but this guy right here wishes it were a colorful traditional Steel release. A fresh restoration has been completed on this one, but expect a standard Disney package with HDR10 on the disc and Dolby Vision on the streaming version,  and all features on the blu-ray. Still baffles me that they never at least copy audio commentaries to the 4K disc.

Sony has announced Insidious: The Red Door for a September 26 blu-ray (no 4K disc) release.

To those curious as to why the street date for Blackhat from Arrow Video keeps getting pushed back, it's not the usual reasons. Arrow Video has announced they have located and will be including the Director's Cut as well to the package. New street date is October 28th. Great job Arrow with making this possible.

  • You Can't Fix A Franchise So Destroy Everything! - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide August 27, 2023

Posted Sun Aug 27, 2023 at 09:00 AM PDT by
The Flash Movie Warner Bros. backdrop

Bruce Wayne: If you were to go into the past, you have no idea what the consequences would be.
Barry Allen: Bruce, I could fix things.
Bruce Wayne: You could also destroy everything.

This week we get busy with lots of releases in both the 4K and Blu-ray categories. More Chucky, the next Paramount Presents Label release, a 'Condor' movie, and more!

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 13 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of August 27th - September 2nd, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Import Monday has Arrow Video's take on Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits. No doubt what's on the actual disc is identical to Criterion's release, but we do get a slipcase and swag with this edition. I personally wish Criterion would do some of this.

The big domestic New Release this week is The Flash. Available in the usual assortment, a Standard Edition, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook and a Walmart Exclusive. And just like so many recent assortments, Target is absent from the 4K category.

We *might* also see Infinity Pool, a SteelBook release from Decal - Neon. We cannot validate this release as Amazon shows it as being unavailable, but here is a Best Buy link that shows it available to order, but they have no cover art, which is inconclusive.

For catalog titles we begin with a trio of titles from Universal, Battlestar Galactica: The Movie, available as a standard release and a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook release, and the 1998 biopic Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The third and newest title in the mix is Promising Young Woman.

Next, from Scream/Shout Factory, parts 4 - 7 of the Chucky (Child's Play) movies. Specs for these films are a potential mess, with only one of them listing Dolby Vision and only one of them, the blu-ray, not the 4K having Atmos sound. I get the feeling they all have Dolby Vision and 5.1 sound, multiple requests from Shout went unanswered. No doubt the inevitable reviews will clarify these specs. In sequential order, these films are Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky.

The Paramount Presents label this week has spine number 41 available, Hustle & Flow.

Pair of titles from Kino Lorber this week too, Staying Alive and Three Days of the Condor (aka 3 Days of the Condor).

Amazon is now listing this one as September 12th, but other sources (including Arrowvideo.com) still say 8/29, 2009 remake The Last House on the Left.

If you did not get 'em from Vinegar Syndrome's direct site, now you can get general releases for Gorgo and Terror at Tenkiller.

And lastly, a Wednesday release at that, The Legend of Boggy Creek. This one has been talked about for some time on Facebook and it looks like it is finally coming out.

Next week, two Universal "Vault" imports, Night of the Comet, Sleepy Hollow, The Princess Bride and more.

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases includes The Flash available as a standard edition and a Target Exclusive. Also look for Staying Alive and Three Days of the Condor (aka 3 Days of the Condor) from Kino Lorber and The Last House on the Left (2009) from Arrow Video. For a Wednesday release, The Legend of Boggy Creek also gets a blu-ray release.

A new romcom from Sony Pictures with No Hard Feelings.

A little martial arts action from Arrow Video with New Fist of Fury.

MGM's catalog batch this week includes Crime & Punishment, Crime + Punishment in Suburbia, Mystery Date, Nobody's Fool (1986), Play Dirty and The Wild Party.

Anime highlights include A Couple of Cuckoos Season 1 Part 1, Cromartie High School, Re: Cutie Honey, The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2, which is available as a standard edition and as a Limited Edition, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs and Shadows House Season 2.

From Criterion this week, a drama/romance titled Drylongso.

Warner Archive's August slate is also this week, titles include Father's Little Dividend, Gay Purr-ee, Little Women (1933), The Life of Emile Zola, Spinout and Wichita.

TV on disc this week, The Flash: The Ninth and Final Season and The Flash: The Complete Series.

Honorable Mention: Severin Films has a special interest box set titled The Sensual World of Black Emanuelle this week. If this is your type of collection, pounce immediately, it probably won't last long.

Next week, the U.S. has the Labor Day holiday, and there is a reprieve in this category, call it another chance to recharge your wallet.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Let's call this one a pleasant surprise, Disney has announced that they will be bringing a few of their Disney+ shows to blu-ray and 4K SteelBooks. Shows include Loki, The Mandalorian and Wandavision.

Universal will also be doing The Black Phone and Coacine Bear on 4K disc in September. Thank me for the latter, I bought the import.

Arrow Video's November slate will include 3 skus of Barbarella (including 4K)(traditional art for me on that one), Tremors 2 4K and a 6-disc box set titled Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe.

Delighted to see Pokémon XY Mega 3-Movie Collection coming to blu-ray October 17th. This closes the gap on these films not available in the US. Diancie & the Cocoon of Destruction only recently became available in Germany.

  • What's this? What's This!?! A 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide August 20, 2023!

Posted Sun Aug 20, 2023 at 09:00 AM PDT by
    The Nightmare Before Christmas backdrop

Is there such a thing as returning to normal with disc releases? Probably not, but compared to last week the 4K category has grown by leaps and bounds. This week we see a black comedy (without a Wayans brother at the helm), Jack Skellington gets a 4K update, Antonio Banderas' best known character, and more.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 12 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of August 20th - August 26th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Leading the week with a catalog upgrade, because, it has grown such a following and we are leading the guide with it. From Disney, The Nightmare Before Christmas gets a Standard Edition and a "Disney 100" style Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook.

Shout Factory brings us Hackers, which is available as a Collector's Edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. As a collector, I am perplexed at the lack of a slipcover on the "Collector's Edition".

From Sony Pictures, The Legend of Zorro gets a 4K upgrade. Good to see the sequels also get the 4K upgrade treatment.

Arrow Video offers up nostalgic 1985 with Weird Science.

Closing out the catalog title category, barring any delays, the 'Indicator Series' releases for The Night of the Hunted and The Rape of the Vampire release on Tuesday as well.

Out of sequence, I know, new release last this week, from Lionsgate we have comedy/horror titled The Blackening, which comes available as a Standard Edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook.

Next week, a Time Bandits import (with swag), Chucky 4-7, Battlestar and more!

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above releases include The Blackening from LionsGate and the pair of Indicator Series titles, The Night of the Hunted and The Rape of the Vampire.

The rest of this category is pretty barren. As always though, here are the highlights:

A rather random catalog title from Sony Pictures with 1981's American Pop, an 'animated trek across the musical landscape of the 20th century'.

Arrow Video this week has Unman, Wittering and Zigo, a drama/thriller.

LionsGate this week offers something other than an action/thriller with a comedy titled You Hurt My Feelings.

If you did not import the Imprint release, this week Kino has you covered with Pretty Baby.

Another animated music film, but this time Warner Bros, look for Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar.

Four films on four discs from Criterion with Bo Widerberg’s New Swedish Cinema.

A minimalist week for Anime, Ranking of Kings Season 1 Part 2, which is available as a Standard Edition and Limited Edition, and Reincarnated as a Sword: Complete Collection.

Worthy Mention: Shout Factory releases the thriller Coma (1978), Michael Crichton does the adaptation of a book instead of the other way around, someone adapting his book.

Next week we do get a significant increase in titles in this category.

    Notable announcements from last week:

The Criterion Collection has announced their November line up. Do check it out!

Kino Lorber has finalized the details for Red Dragon 4K and Cujo 4K / blu-ray releases. They are scheduled to arrive on October 24th. They have also announced a new product line titled "Kino Cult" with three titles already slated. The debut titles are Lorna the Exorcist, Alien Outlaw and The Dark Power and they all release on October 24th.

Universal will be releasing M3GAN to 4K disc on October 10th. Before we get overly excited though, it does look like they are adding Atmos sound, but only including HDR10. Meanwhile the streaming version has Dolby Vision AND HDR10+. Still, we gain something. There is also a good chance (rumor) that The Black Phone will be out in October. Turbine Media is also releasing The Black Phone in Germany on October 5th. Will Scream Factory do them with Dolby Vision and more extras?

  • You can't wake up if you don't fall asleep - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide August 13, 2023

Posted Sun Aug 13, 2023 at 09:00 AM PDT by
    Asteroid City backdrop

"You can't wake up if you don't fall asleep" - Augie Steenbeck, Asteroid City.

Probably the slowest week all year for 4K releases, but with the pace we have seen them, it's good to let our wallets recharge just a tad.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 11 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of August 13th - August 19th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

The new release this week is Babylon 5: The Road Home, a new movie based on the series from several decades ago. If you want to revisit the series on (blu-ray) disc though, you will need to wait until December.

Hopefully this game is over with with Paramount. Produce a 'Paramount Presents' title that was mastered in 4K on blu-ray only, then a few months later, give us a 4K release. This week we see Roman Holiday get this treatment.

Last week Warner Bros. released a basic edition for Enter the Dragon to the US market. This Friday you can get a Collector's Edition Import from Amazon. It's releases like this that echo the sentiments of Bill Hunt's article from last week.

Next week, a new horror comedy from LionsGate with The Blackening, Hackers, Zorro, Nightmare Before Christmas, and more.

    Blu-ray releases-

A blu-ray counterpart of Babylon 5: The Road Home is available this week.

From Universal, Wes Anderson's latest, Asteroid City hits blu-ray.

New thriller from LionsGate, Confidential Informant with Dominic Purcell and Mel Gibson.

Criterion Collection this week has Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart, a film set on the topic of Chinese-American life.

After sitting on hold for quite some time, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania comes to us via Sony Pictures. Absent is the 4K sku that was originally listed on retailer sites. Is it coming, is it going to be only available via import? Sony, you just don't give us the third film in a franchise on 4K and forget the rest.

Also from Sony this week, an action/comedy titled The Machine.

Slow week for anime, highlights are for only The Life of Budori Gusuko and Parallel World Pharmacy.

Another slow category this week, TV on disc. It includes just The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 1.

Between Arrow Video and Shout Factory, you have probably been building your Shaw Brothers Collection. This week from Shout Factory, wait no more, it's Shaw Brothers Classics: Vol. Two.

Honorable Mention: Kino Lorber's next set, Audie Murphy Collection III is available this week.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Here at HDD, we must acknowledge the passing of William Friedkin. Known for several A-List films, I'm sure The Exorcist and The French Connection most recently stick out for various reasons. Check out the article at Vanity Fair.

Universal is continuing to double-dip us with what they call the Universal Essentials Collection. Already out are these special editions for Jurassic Park 4K and The Big Lebowski 4K, coming October 3rd are The Sting 4K and It Came from Outer Space - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray + 3D. The latter is also getting a non-essentials release the same day. Also on October 3rd, Universal Classic Monsters: Limited Edition Collection. Although not an 'essentials' release, it still is a swag-filled edition that would look nice on our video walls.

  • You Made One Mistake. You Never Took My Car - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide August 6, 2023

Posted Sun Aug 6, 2023 at 09:00 AM PDT by
    Fast X backdrop Universal Pictures

"You made one mistake. You never took my car" - Dominic Toretto, Fast X, Part 1.

This week a fast cars franchise comes to an end, well,  part one of a three part ending, or until they decide to make more! A couple of 4K upgrades including Bruce Lee's best known film, and sub-label MVD Rewind LaserVision Collection debuts its first title.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 10 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of August 6th - August 12th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

We start out the week with a Monday release, but this time it is not an import. The A24 shop has an over the top edition of Everything Everywhere All at Once. Do check it out, and if you plan on buying it follow this word of CAUTION. Make sure you have selected the edition you want (4K or blu-ray) before completing your checkout. Their shop is a bit quirky in the selection process and the version you intended to buy could be overlooked.

On to Tuesday releases and leading the category as a new release is Fast X. Options include the Standard Edition, the Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook and the Walmart Exclusive. And of course there is the complete collection (as of now) available as well. Target appears to be off target again as they are absent from the retailer exclusives 4K list.

Getting a 4K upgrade from the Criterion Collection, Japanese drama/fantasy Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams.

Another 4K upgrade from Warner Bros with Enter the Dragon. Will we get a 'Golden Harvest' type set like they did in the UK a couple of weeks ago? One can hope,  but if we don't get the set, we can at least get the rest of the films that are in it in 4K in that set, right? A collector's edition is available as an import (of course it is) on August 18th.

The new sub-label MVD Rewind LaserVision Collection debuts this week with Swamp Thing. I have high hopes for this label, everything I have seen from the parent company over the years thus far has been very positive. Hard to believe my preorder was in April for this one.

The latest double dip/but this time as a slipcover style SteelBook from Best Buy this week is Ender's Game.

Next week, let's go on a Roman Holiday, let's revisit Babylon 5, a Cauldron title gets a general release, and a slew of Severin titles too!

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above titles first, Everything Everywhere All at Once gets an A24 shop blu-ray (see caution note in the 4K category),  Fast X gets a Standard Edition, a Target Exclusive as well as a ten movie collection. And lastly, Swamp Thing gets an MVD Rewind Collection release.

TV on disc includes 1923: A Yellowstone Origin Story: Season One and The Brokenwood Mysteries: Series 9.

MGM is offering a couple of titles that were done by various companies in the past, or maybe the first time to blu-ray, they are The Big Knife, Crooked Hearts and Go Tell the Spartans.

You all know who you are, that is, Adam Sandler fans. Shout Factory has his 2000 film Little Nicky on blu-ray this week.

For Anime, not much going on this week, but you can pick up One Piece - Collection 32 and/or One Piece: Season Thirteen - Voyage Two.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Our friends at The Digital Bits (Bill Hunt specifically) has posted an article that echoes a lot of the same frustrations I myself and others have been talking and thinking a lot about in the past couple of years, and it has been getting worse more recently. A lot is mentioned on how the US market gets passed up for some excellent releases, and in general the half-assed releases we are reluctantly having to purchase. Let us also remember Disney's most recent move in discontinuing physical media in Australia. This sets bad precedent, hopefuly other companies do NOT follow suit.  Do check it out, it's a good read.

Shout Factory has revealed their October slate. In no particular order, they are The Blob (1988) 4K, Pumpkinhead 4K, Shaw Brothers Classics: Vol. Two, Night Of The Demons 4K, Night Of The Demons 2, Night Of The Demons 3, Evangelion: 3.0+1.11 Thrice Upon a Time, Evangelion: 3.0+1.11 Thrice Upon a Time 4K Collector's Edition and Wallace & Gromit: The Complete Cracking Collection. As always, there is the possibility they will add more, usually anime, between now and then.

Also do have a look see at the most recent Disc Round Up written by our own Tom Landy.

  • Disc News Round-up: There's a Killer Condom on the Loose - in 4K!

    Killer Condom Vinegar Syndrome

Several 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray titles were announced and/or added to our release calendar this week.  Read on below for some of the main highlights that we have summed up for you in case you missed them.

Warner Brothers has officially announced William Friedkin's classic The Exorcist for 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 9. It will include the theatrical cut as well as the extended director's cut. Best Buy will also be carrying a 4K SteelBook.

    The Exorcist 4K SteelBook

A Blu-ray (sorry no 4K) of 20th Century Studios' The Boogeyman based on the short story by Stephen King is going to be hitting stores on October 10. Better check under your bed before you go to sleep tonight.

Continuing the horror trend, Paramount is slapping a SteelBook costume on the 4K UHD Blu-ray of Halloween H20: 20 Years Later which will be available on September 26.

Sony's Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse will be swinging to 4KUHD & Blu-ray September 5th. There will also be several retailer exclusive versions including a Target Blu-ray with collectible cards, a Wal-Mart Blu-ray SteelBook, and a Best Buy 4KUHD SteelBook.

    Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 4K   Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse     Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse   Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse BB

Vinegar Syndrome has listed a few new limited edition preorders: Killer Condom on 4K UHD Blu-ray, plus The Cardona Collection: Volume Two, Amazon Jail / Amazon Jail II, and Guest House Paradiso on Blu-ray. Several limited edition titles from Vinegar Syndrome's partner labels have been added to our release calendar as well: Vengeance Is Mine, Tower. A Bright Day & Monument, Terminal Degeneration: The Films of Jon Moritsugu, Once Upon a Time in Uganda, Name Above Title and Other Tales of Woe by Carlos Conceição, Heroic Times, Give Me Pity, Dream Life, Don't Fall In Love With Yourself, Death In Brunswick, The Catechism Cataclysm, and Bloodfeast!: The Adventures of Sgt. Lunch.

Universal has announced Wes Anderson's latest star-studded comedy Asteroid City for Blu-ray. The release will be available on August 15.

And the last thing worth noting is that Pixar and Disney's Elemental is headed for a home video release on September 26. There will be a Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Walmart Exclusive 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and a Best Buy Exclusive 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook.

I think that's all we have for today so thanks for tuning in and have a great weekend!

  • Someday I'm Gonna Make Great Machines That Fly - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide July 30, 2023

Posted Sun Jul 30, 2023 at 09:00 AM PDT by
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 backdrop

"Someday I'm gonna make great machines that fly. And me and my friends are gonna go flying together, into the forever and beautiful sky" - Rocket Raccoon, GOTG3

Just like that, July closes out and August begins. This week gives us Guardians of the Galaxy 3, James Dean, John Wayne, Dean Martin, Bueller.. Bueller.. Bueller and more.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 9 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of July 30th - August 5th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Import Monday begins with another Japanese Artwork Steelbook, this one is for The Meg. As Japanese Artwork Editions go, this is about the most non-Japanese Artwork Edtion looking cover thus far.

And this one shows sold out, a StudioCanal Vintage Classics Line release for Cross of Iron. You may be able to find this on Amazon US, Diabolik DVD or have to resort to the secondary market.

On to Domestic Tuesday, and the new release this week is for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This one is available as a Standard Edition, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook and as a Walmart Exclusive.

Catalog titles next, let's begin with 2 Guns from Universal Pictures. Quite an all star cast on this one, and just like last week's slate, more Bill Paxton (minus the chickens)! There is also a SteelBook that has been added at the last second (no, Universal never adds them at the last second!)

If you are not a Disney Movie Club Member and did not shop the secondary market, Cinderella (1950) now gets a general release. This one is also available as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. Bippety Boppety Boo!

And another pair of "Disney 100" SteelBooks are also available this week from Best Buy with Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Frozen.

Let's talk classic film, or rather, a pair of them. First we get East of Eden, which stars Julie Harris, James Dean and Raymond Massey. When it comes to an expert opinion, I cannot do this film justice, so follow our link, read David's review, then purchase it via our link.

And next, follow the same workflow for Rio Bravo which stars John Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson. Read the review, make that purchase!

Next, a cult classic from Shout Factory, Clive Barker's Nightbreed.

This next one is sort of a double-dip, a release from the Universal Essentials Collection, The Big Lebowski: 25th Anniversary Limited Edition. Finally, a swag-filled set for a favorite film. And just like 2 Guns, a SteelBook has been added at the last second.

Next week, Fast X, Swamp Thing, Enter the Dragon and more!

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above titles include the (likely) region B locked import for Cross of Iron from StudioCanal and likely a region-free domestic release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from Disney.

I did mention it last week, this week's blu-ray calendar is an arid landscape. There are less than 10 actual previously unreleased skus.

New release from Universal, not to be confused with that Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon film from decades ago with a similar title, we drop the word The and give you River Wild. Reading the synopsis of both, they do sound quite similar.

Anime highlights include Black Summoner: The Complete Season and Vermeil in Gold - Complete Collection. Because we are really reaching, we will mention a few repackages here, Dragon Ball Z has new editions available; Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season 4, Season 5, Season 6, Season 7, Season 8 and Season 9. And if you want the whole shebang in one box set, check out the Amazon Exclusive Set that is available too.

How about a comedy/crime film with Tina Fey and Jon Hamm? Yeah, that would be Maggie Moore(s).

From Shout Factory, Assault On Hill 400, a World War II based film.

Import Friday features several Imprint Films Director Collections:

    Directed By… Sidney J. Furie (1970 – 1978) – Imprint Collection #231 – #235

    Directed By… Walter Hill (1975 – 2006) – Imprint Collection #164 – #169

    Film Focus: Gene Hackman (1970 – 1977) – Imprint Collection #236 – #239

    Notable announcements from last week:

Arrow Video has revealed their October slate. For the USA/Canada, look for Witness in both both blu-ray and 4K editions, The Iron-Fisted Monk blu-ray and The Desperate Hours blu-ray. For the UK, Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment in blu-ray and 4K edition, as well as an Arrow Video store exclusive, and The House by the Cemetery, both blu-ray and 4K editions, and, yup, an Arrow Video store exclusive too/

Paramount will be releasing Scream 3 as a 4K and 4K SteelBook, as well as a Scream 4K trilogy. Seeing as how we just bought Scream VI, hopefully the studio fills in the gaps to our 4K library.

Universal will be releassing American Graffiti to 4K and 4K SteelBook on November 17th, shortly after a theatrical run.

"Ray Malcolm? That's my brother's boy. I gotta finish feedin' these chickens. It's gettin' hot as hell around here at noontime." ( Old Man Malcolm - One False Move)

If you are in the market for 4K titles, this week definitely has a few to pick from. From a new DC animated, we also get Needful Things, get married to an axe murderer, World War Z gets upgraded, more Bill Paxton and much more! Now if you are looking for blu-ray this week, prepare to deflate your wallet because there are close to 100 skus to pick from!

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 8 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of July 23rd - July 29th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

As far as New Releases this week, Sony brings us a SteelBook of Resident Evil: Death Island.

Next, we get another DC animated title from Warner Bros, Justice League: Warworld.

Moving on to catalog titles, in alphabetical order (more or less) let's start with a horror titled Black Magic Rites from Powerhouse Films. Be aware that the blu-ray is delayed a month, I expect this to be delayed as well.

From Vinegar Syndrome and their related partner labels, we get general releases of The Boogey Man, EffectsNight Screams and Undefeatable. Site exclusives of Gorgo and Terror at Tenkiller, which are only available direct from their site, and typically become general releases on Amazon and other merchants 2 months later.

Another appreciated boutique label, Kino Lorber brings us Needful Things.

Criterion Collection releases One False Move this week, a crime/thriller with Bill Paxton. Since Paxton's death, it's nice to see more of his films on disc, 4K no less!

Sony Pictures has So I Married an Axe Murderer, a romcom thriller.

Shout! Factory upgrades World War Z to 4K this week.

Not quite a double-dip, Paramount releases The War of the Worlds (1953). This go round it's just the single film package with no bonus blu-ray for When World Collide.

Next week, Bueller, Bueller, Bueller, GOTG3, James Dean and Dean Martin classics, more Disney 100 SteelBooks, and so much more!

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above releases include Resident Evil: Death Island from Sony Pictures, Justice League: Warworld from Warner Bros, Needful Things from Kino Lorber and One False Move from Criterion.

The remainder of this category is very crowded this week even when we omit any reissues. Doing our best to bring the highlights, the daunting task of where to begin starts now.

Arrow Video presents Blood Money - Four Western Classics Vol. 2. No doubt another top rated presentation from Arrow.

New sports documentary titled It Ain't Over. With a cast of Yogi Berra, Bob Costas, Billy Crystal, Joe Garagiola, Derek Jeter and Vin Scully, this one sounds interesting.

Anime highlights include The Ancient Magus' Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm, Animal Treasure Island, High School of the Dead Complete Collection, Iria: Zeiram the Animation, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! Complete Collection and Sailor Moon S: Complete Third Season.

TV on disc includes just Gangs of London: Season Two. Feast or famine is what this category is all about.

Warner Archive Collection's primary drop of July titles is this week and the titles are The Broadway Melody (1929), Cimarron (1931), Du Barry Was a Lady (1943), The Fastest Gun Alive (1956), Helen of Troy (1956) and The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954).

The general release for Robot Monster - 3-D is available this week.

The next Vestron Video Collector's Series release, My Best Friend is a Vampire debuts to blu-ray this week via LionsGate.

Honorable Mention: Barring any last second delay, Screen Media/Cinedigm has a special interest release that sounds intriguing, Hollywood Dreams and Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.

Next week in this category, a polar opposite. Aside from the reissues, there are probably less than ten titles.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Criterion Collection has announced their October 2023 slate, and although there are no Halloween themed movies, it is quite a list nonetheless. Check out the news story here.

A24 has an over the top collector's edition for Everything Everywhere All at Once, both blu-ray and 4K releases with an August 7 street date. The A24 shop uses the same page for blu-ray and 4K versions, just be certain which version you are proceeding with before checking out.

The Last of Us HBO backdrop

With Prime Day in the rearview, and other retailers also having tried to get a piece of the pie, how well did you do? Yes, Movies and TV is my primary category on Prime Day, but Books, Toys and Games and Computers & Accessories always gets a look from me. You? Amazon announced they had their best Prime Day event ever.

For 4K this week we get a most excellent Bruce Lee import, that Evil Dead Rise SteelBook I told you to wait for, TWO Criterion releases, and so much more.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 7 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of July 16th - July 22nd, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Import Monday new release begins with Evil Dead Rise in a SteelBook package, the US domestic release of a standard case edition was a couple of weeks ago.

No waiting a couple of weeks for the SteelBook release of The Last of Us: The Complete First Season, and our links bring you over to Amazon UK.

Import Catalog title of Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest should grab your attention. Some of Bruce Lee's finest work, all in 4K. At present, the US market is only getting Enter The Dragon in 4K on August 8th, and I really doubt the rest of these films will, so it might be wise to import this set. Alternately, the Arrow Video Store has their store exclusive set for purchase as well.

Moving on to Domestic Tuesday,  there's one new release, HBO's The Last of Us: The Complete First Season. Best I can tell, there is no digital copy included in this set, so go with whichever case/cover art you prefer. It would be ironic that a TV series based on a video game would be played on a gaming console that the actual game is installed on. Be careful, you might cause dimensional paradox right there.

Criterion Collection has Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, a new-wave crime film.

TWO Criterion 4K releases the same week? Yup, next let's snatch The Ranown Westerns: Five Films Directed by Budd Boetticher, a collection of five Western films from director Budd Boetticher starring Randolph Scott. With the Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale going on right now, almost every one of these Criterion titles is half price at  B & N physical stores, online, and on Amazon.com as well.

From Arrow Video, 2011's Martin Scorsese hit Hugo gets a 4K upgrade. This one has the 3D disc inside as well.

Universal releases Les Misérables (2012). If you can figure out the formula in which Uni uses to determine which releases they do themselves and which ones Shout! Factory gets to do, you might be on to something, please let us know.

Kino Lorber keeps cranking out what movie buffs want, this week William Friedkin's To Live and Die in L.A..

Next week more Resident Evil, another DC animated, more Kino, more in general!

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above titles include The Last of Us: The Complete First Season from HBO, Hugo 2D/3D from Arrow Video and To Live and Die in L.A. from Kino Lorber.

Look for some fresh comedy from LionsGate titled Fool's Paradise.

New romcom from Sony Pictures with Love Again.

Delayed from a couple of weeks ago, Land of the Pharaohs is now available from Warner Archive. Reading David's review makes me chuckle, an exposed navel was considered obscene back then.

TV on disc includes Moonhaven: Season One and South Park: Seasons 21-25.

Anime highlights include The Devil Is a Part-Timer!: Season 2, Medaka Box (Seasons 1 & 2) Complete Collection and Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan.

In the zero-day advance notice category (I'm sure you can tell I am talking about Universal again!), action/thriller Kandahar with Gerard Butler comes to blu-ray. Can't say for certain if this film merits a 4K disc, but undoubtedly the digital release will be 4K and in general, this type of movie would sell as a 4K disc.

Honorable Mention: Kino's Audie Murphy Collection II is available this week.

Next week, if you shop a lot of blu-rays, Tuesday alone currently has just under a hundred skus listed, prepare yourself!

    Notable announcements from last week:

East of Eden 4K and Rio Bravo 4K got moved to August 1st. Warner Bros has seemingly done this a fair amount of times for older catalog titles, no doubt for all the right reasons.

Warner Bros has announced the 2023 film for The Flash to have a disc street date of August 29th.

LionsGate has announced Tim Story's The Blackening to disc release on August 22.

Although not officially announced, Fast X appears on track, on, track, for an August 8th street date. Expect an announcement by August 5th.

Parts 4-7 of the Chucky movies have been pushed back a month to August 29.

Last week, the SAG joined the WGA in a strike. How is this going to affect the entertainment industry in general?

    Scream VI backdrop

Won't exactly call it a return to normal, but after a holiday week, any sort of release schedule is much more normal than that. It's a tossup on whether Scream 6 or Sisu will be the 4K title of the week. I lean towards Sisu because that category generally gets more attention.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 6 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of July 9th - July 15th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

With no Imports Monday to report, thes get New Releases Tuesday first.

From Paramount, Scream VI, which comes as a Standard Edition and as a SteelBook Edition.

From LionsGate, Sisu, which comes as a Standard Edition and as a SteelBook, but the latter is a Best Buy Exclusive.

Moving on to catalog releases, Criterion Collection releases After Hours, listed as a 'Dark' Comedy. And, The Watermelon Woman, which is in the romcom category.

From Scream Factory, a horror titled The Burning.

Closing out the 4K category this week, a few double-dips of sort. Invaders from Mars (1953) gets a standard release and both Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation get a SteelBook repackage.

Next week, Bruce Lee imports, that Evil Dead Rise SteelBook I told you about, Les Mes, James Dean, John Wayne and more!

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above releases include Scream VI from Paramount and Sisu from LionsGate for the new releases, and After Hours from Criterion for a catalog title. The double-dip/standard release of Invaders from Mars also is available this week.

This week and next are pretty slow for blu-ray releases. Again, a good week to be a boutique label.

New comedy/drama from LionsGate titled Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.. Not done with LionsGate yet, also look for Beau Is Afraid, which is a comedy/horror.

From Sony Pictures Classics, Drama/Romance titled Carmen.

Under the standard Sony label, based on the anime of the same name, Knights of the Zodiac gets a live action film. As a fan of the series, is a 4K import an option?

A new comedy from Universal titled Book Club: The Next Chapter. Were there previous chapters?

TV on disc includes just Doctor Who: Jon Pertwee: Complete Season Three.

Collectors of the series from Kino Lorber should know that Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XV releases this week.

There is practically no anime this week, what we do see are movies with One Piece Film: Red and Ranma ½ OVA & Movies Collection.

A little bit of action from Vertical Entertainment with To Catch a Killer.

Honorable Mention: Richard Pryor Double Feature is available this week and is currently the only way to get both Which Way Is Up? and 'The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings' on blu-ray. And if you were looking for White Noise 2, you can get it with another double feature from Mill Creek, White Noise / White Noise 2.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Shout Factory has revealed a slew of titles for September. In no particular order (except maybe from their social media account) they are Lost Souls, The Pack (1977), Night of the Comet 4K, My Demon Lover, My Bloody Valentine 4K, The Lost City of Z 4K, What's Love Got to Do with It?, Irwin Allen: Master of Disaster Collection, Natural Born Killers 4K and Lonely Castle in the Mirror. I would expect another anime title or two to be added, but this is still quite a list!

Disney has revealed the release of The Little Mermaid (2023) for a date of September 19th. Keeping up with their usual formula, Best Buy SteelBook, Walmart Exclusive, and the best cover art among all the choices remains with the blu-ray edition.

Jaws 2 - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Universal Pictures Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary, Joseph Mascolo

In the USA, there is a major holiday this week, which is pretty much why there are fewer releases, both in the 4K category and the blu-ray category. What are some of your favorite films or TV shows with July 4th / Independence Day in them? Uncle Sam and Independence Day are some obvious ones. Stranger Things 3 also revolved around this holiday.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 5 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of July 2nd - July 8th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

There are no new release titles and no notable imports this week.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Jaws 2 debuts to 4K disc with a standard edition and a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook.

Paramount Pictures delivers The Truman Show, perhaps one of Jim Carrey's better known films besides Ace Ventura or The Mask.

Shout Factory upgrades another Universal Pictures film to 4K, this one coincidentally is titled, Upgrade.

In the double-dip category, Paramount offers two existing films, but as collectible SteelBooks, Mission: Impossible - III and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Next week, a semi-normal week, with two major titles, Sisu and Scream 6, plus another Criterion 4K, and several other upgrades too!

    Blu-ray releases-

There are to blu-ray counterparts of the above titles this week. Actually, this entire category is nearly devoid of any activity.

On a busier week we might pass right over this one, but it has Dolph Lundgren in it and we have the space. An action movie titled Come Out Fighting from Screen Media.

Anime highlights include The Executioner and Her Way of Life Complete Collection, One Piece: Season Thirteen - Voyage One and Re:Cycle of the Penguindrum Movie Collection.

Crime/Drama from Arrow Video titled Fighting Back.

There is one added bonus this week. June's slate of Imprint Films releases is available on Amazon this Friday, here's what to look for:

    Notable announcements from last week:

With the Independence Day holiday this week in the US, last week's announcements were a bit slow. (Thus two UK companies with the biggest news)

Arrow Video has revealed their September releases. For the US and Canada, look for Borsalino, Carlito's Way 4K, The Prodigal Son and Ringu 4K. If you don't mind importing 4K titles (or getting them from Diabolik), Blood and Black Lace gets a 4K, and a bit of a surprise, The Psycho Collection (1960-1990) gets a 4K set as well. I personally doubt that Universal will be doing 4K discs if the 3 sequels of Psycho, so this might be the set to get.

Second Sight UK also has a couple of surprises for August, Crimes of the Future as a 4K Special Edition, and It Follows, as a 4K Special Edition too. We have also linked a standard edition release of the latter because there is no 4K disc option in the US.

Evil Dead Rise Warner Bros. Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher

This week offers a mixed bag of titles, which might be just what the doctor ordered. Fun fact, the sound of a fly has been used in all of the Evil Dead films, Evil Dead Rise actually opens with that sound.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 4 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of June 25th - July 1st, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases

Too late for press time last week, Turbine Media Group releases three 4K media books for The Deep House. Still, check it out. They have other 4K titles in the works as well, Black Phone and Renfield among others. Why Universal isn't doing them, I couldn't really say.

The new release this week is Evil Dead Rise from Warner Bros. There have been mixed reviews with this one. And if you want the shiny SteelBook, the USA has been snubbed again, seek overseas markets. There is a European SteelBook coming July 17th, as well as other editions elsewhere.

Catalog releases next.  Got to thinking, what a missed opportunity. Waiting until this week to get Creepshow, especially when there is an episode titled "Father's Day." All he ever wanted was his cake! The episode I remember most is the one with the cockroaches, but I was rather young when I had seen this film. A little more comedy to the horror mix, also look for Motel Hell.

When you think of classic Chevy Chase, no doubt you think of National Lampoon's Vacation (or the sequels). This one is available as a standard edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. The US market was snubbed (again) for the Ultimate Collector's Edition, which releases on Import Monday.

From Arrow Video, Kevin Smith's Mallrats. Next, even though Universal recently did their release, Arrow Video's 'fat pack' edition of Waterworld is available this week as well. A higher bit rate and a different mix of special features.

Powerhouse Films' Indicator Series has Cold Eyes of Fear this week.

SteelBooks of the first two films of the franchise, Mission: Impossible and Mission: Impossible - II are available this week.

Standard Editions for Daughters of Darkness and Dead & Buried close out the category.

Next week a Jaws sequel, an 'Upgrade,'  Truman Show, and more MI steels.

    Blu-ray releases

And like the 4K category, just past press time for last week's shopping guide, Turbine Media Group announced several media books for the film Harry and the Hendersons.

Blu-ray counterparts for the above category, one new release, one catalog release. Look for Evil Dead Rise from Warner Bros and Cold Eyes of Fear (Limited Edition) from Powerhouse Films.

Warner Archive has been focusing most of their releases to street on the same week each given month, their June slate this week includes Angel Face, Caged!, Dangerous When Wet, The Damned Don't Cry and The Old Man and the Sea. Land of the Pharaohs got moved to July 18th.

New bio/drama from Sony Pictures titled Big George Foreman. This man has touched several generations and the story itself sounds well worth a look.

TV on disc has just one title this week, Tales of the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season.

More Sandpiper Pictures releases with The Barefoot Contessa and The Secret of Santa Vittoria.

Anime highlights are not so high this week, look for just Skeleton Knight in Another World: The Complete Season in this category. Yes, there are other fine anime releases, but they do not fit the right criteria for this guide.

If you're not a Disney Movie Club Member and was forced to wait, Mickey & Friends: 10 Classic Shorts - Volume 2 is now available to general release.

Just a single sku from Criterion this week, but it is a collection of Italian films on 9-discs, Pasolini 101.

Let's talk special interest. With a drought of 3D discs, no doubt you might want to consider Prison Girls 3D from Kino Lorber.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released to 4K and blu-ray discs on August 1.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is coming to 4K disc on September 26.

Avatar: The Way of Water - 3D Blu-ray Review James Cameron

Choose Your Avatar! At least that is what people in targeted campaigns on Facebook have been seeing. When I see it, I yell the 4K BD100 with Dolby Vision, but it's probably the answer they are looking for. If you are a 4K buyer, this week Avatar is gonna cost you around $70, if you are a little more hardcore collector of physical media, more like $200. Yes, there are a few other good catalog titles to ponder as well. Until the discs are in my hand though, Avatar is still just a mirage to me. I have seen pictures of The Way of Water in store backrooms already and my 3D copy has shipped, but not quite yet on the 4K SteelBook though.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 3 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of June 18th - June 24th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases

Which 4K discs are you getting this week and which SKUS of the Avatar films are they?

The original Avatar (2009) is up as a first time to 4K disc. Hard to believe it goes way back to 2009.

Avatar: The Way of Water is probably the reason we get the original film to 4K. The Way of Water is available as a standard edition, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook edition, a Target Exclusive, and last but not least, a Walmart Exclusive. See the Blu-ray category for a pleasant surprise, a 3D edition as well.

On to other films now, Paramount brings us Tom Cruise day with both a great classic The Firm, and well-known fantasy film, Vanilla Sky. Hard to resist not buying both.

Keeping with releasing films in pairs, Kino Lorber brings us The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and Ronin. Makes me wonder if The Manchurian Candidate (2004) will follow as Paramount has done the remakes on two other films so far where Kino Lorber did the original ones.

Next week, a National Lampoon classic, Creepshow gets the 4K upgrade, Mallrats, Waterworld by Arrow Video and more.

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above titles, Avatar: The Way of Water from 20th Century Studios, with what I consider a better cover art than the 4K version, and Ronin gets a Kino Lorber edition as well.

Avatar: The Way of Water also gets a 3D blu-ray edition.

Super slow week for anime, look for Aoashi - Season 1 Part 2 and Haikyu!! To The Top (Season 4) Premium Box Set.

New Guy Ritchie action/thriller The Covenant comes to us via Warner Bros. No 4K in the states on this one.

Catalog releases from MGM, Best Seller, City of Ghosts (2002), Diary of a Hitman, Golden Gate and Stormy Monday.

Another short-notice release from Universal, the 2023 action/comedy Polite Society. (Most likely a not available at Walmart release, again. Not sure what determines if a new Uni release will be available there).

Pair of Criterion Collection releases Medicine for Melancholy, a "lo-fi" drama/romance, and The Servant, a film of the drama category.

TV on disc this week includes just Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 16. I would certainly buy seasons 1-15 if they offered it!

Arrow Video has Japanese action/thriller The Game Trilogy.

Honorable Mention (?) -  Dinosaurs are always hot, this week Well Go USA has I Am T-Rex. It looks worth a gander in my book.

    Notable announcements from last week:

Warner Archive's next batch, Cowboys & Aliens 4K as well as Kill Bill 4K and Kill Bill 2 4K, check out the news story here.

Roman Holiday is getting a 4K release on August 15th. Hustle & Flow is getting a 'Paramount Presents' 4K release on August 29th. How about a 'Paramount Presents' 4K of Roman Holiday? Feel like Days of Thunder again!

Criterion Collection's September slate includes FOUR 4K titles, including The Princess Bride! That leaves the 4K restoration of La Bamba available as a blu-ray only, but hey even so, I might have to buy every title in September. Goodbye wallet, it's been nice knowing you.

  • How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything (Marquis, JW4) - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide June 11, 2023

Posted Sun Jun 11, 2023 at 09:00 AM PDT by
John Wick 4 Highdef Digest Lionsgate Keanu Reeves

What a great quote (above) from John Wick 4. And there ain't no doubt about it, this week John Wick 4 will decimate the charts. With so many skus available though, there probably will not be a clear winner of which sku (always a safe bet with the standard release). On the other hand, maybe you waited for Insidious, Rain Man or Time Bandits. Why not get all four?

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 2 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of June 11th - June 17th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

    4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Import Monday first, if you did not opt for the excellent A24 shop release, Arrow Video has it in one of their limited editions, I am referring to Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse.

So, it was bound to happen, it did happen, a certain studio in the habit of officially announcing a release literally a week before street date, which then causes mass confusion, especially when the actual boxes that were shipped to retailers had a different date (6/6) than the official date (6/13). Am referring to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, on June 6th Universal announced it for a June 13th release. Literally every B&M store out there already had it on the shelves for sale ON 6/6. How dare they follow what the box says!

Alrighty then, the new release that will sell oodles of copies among all the various skus is John Wick 4 from LionsGate. A run down of all the choices available, a Standard Edition, an Amazon Exclusive Edition, a Best Buy Exclusive and a Walmart Exclusive. Absent (again) from the 4K category is the Target Exclusive, how 2006 of them.

If you missed out on the Limited Edition SteelBook, Paramount/CBS has Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season One as a standard edition this week.

Moving on to catalog titles. First from the MVD Marquee Collection, after several street date pushbacks, it looks like Rain Man really is coming out on Tuesday.

From Criterion, a 4K upgrade for Time Bandits. Before you pounce on this though, there is one small thing to consider, the Arrow UK import that is coming out on August 28th. Likely the same transfer, just in a different package and with a little bit of swag.

Although originally listed for next week, the beginning of a franchise with Sony Pictures'/James Wan's SteelBook of Insidious. I hope that some day yesterday that Blumhouse will jump on the 4K disc bandwagon. Some day.

From Dark Star, a 1981 horror titled Scream, aka The Outing.

Next week, it will be all about the two Avatar movies. Yes there are a couple of decent catalog titles coming too, but they will certainly be in the shadows.

    Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above titles, John Wick 4 gets a standard edition release, and Target sticks to blu-ray for their retailer exclusiveRain Man also is available via MVD. If you can handle region locked titles, Arrow Video's Limited Edition release of The Lighthouse also gets a blu-ray edition.

It's bound to happen regularly, in a short announcement window, Universal Pictures releases the sports drama Sweetwater this week.

New comedy from Sony Pictures titled The Man from Toronto. In the horror/thriller category, The Pope's Exorcist, maybe you have heard of Russell Crowe?

Anime highlights include Boruto: Naruto Next Generations - Set 15 (The Otsutsuki Awaken), Made In Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Complete Collection, My Senpai is Annoying, available as a standard edition and a limited edition, and Spy x Family Season 1 Part 1.

TV on disc this week includes Parenthood: The Compete Series and Quantum Leap: Season One.

LionsGate's action/thriller of the week is titled One Ranger.

Next batch of Indicator Series releases with From Hollywood to Heaven: The Lost and Saved Films of the Ormond Family and Mexico Macabre: Four Sinister Tales from the Alameda Films Vault, 1959-1963.

Sandpiper Pictures, known for rereleasing out of print Twilight Time titles, is releasing Lawman, One Man's Hero and Scorpio.

Competing with Shawscope (Arrow Video), Shout Factory this week releases Shaw Brothers Classics: Volume One.

    Notable announcements from last week:

(Berry Gordy's) The Last Dragon will be coming to 4K SteelBook on September 19th.

Sisu has been finalized for blu-ray and 4K disc with a July 11th street date.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off arrives to 4K disc on August 1st.
