The Xbox 360 Lands Twitch App

The leader in game streaming comes to the 360.

Twitch, which is also known as Twitch.tv, is coming to the 360. Twitch is the current leading video platform, and Twitch streams vary from the top players in games like 'StarCraft 2' and 'League of Legends' to the newest players of more obscure games like 'Battletoads.'

At launch, the 360 app will allow Xbox Gold members in the US to view the top 300 live channels on Twitch. The Twitch app will support Kinect voice and motion controls in addition to normal controls.

Twitch streams are so popular that many channels exist as the streaming player's primary employment, which is funded through donations and ad revenue. Streams contain speed runs, top level play, zany challenges, highly obscure games, and even games that leak prior to release dates.

Major Nelson has also announced that he will moderate an exclusive broadcast through the Twitch app following Microsoft's big May 21st reveal event.

'Vampire Diaries,' 'Supernatural,' and 'Arrow' among the free app's offerings.

The new CW app for the Xbox 360 is free to download and free to use for US Xbox Live Gold members. Microsoft's strategy to promote the Xbox 360 as a set-top box and sell users Xbox Live Gold memberships continues even as rumors swirl around the possible features of the new Xbox. The CW app offers free episodes of CW the day after their premiere, no cable subscription required.

Along with episodes of popular CW shows such as 'Beauty & the Beast,' 'Arrow,' 'Supernatural,' and 'Vampire Diaries,' the app offers trailers and interviews. The app also supports Xbox SmartGlass, which allows for a second screen experience with Windows 8, Android, and iOS devices.

For 'Vampire Diaries,' Xbox SmartGlass offers:

A map that follows the characters through town, revealing events throughout the town’s history
Biographies of each character
Legends and lore of New Orleans and the world of "The Vampire Diaries"

The CW on the Xbox 360 supports voice and gesture control through Kinect.

Similar CW apps are available for iOS and Windows devices.

Microsoft's Birthday Present for Live Rewards Members? A quarter.

Gamers with October birthdays found a surprise waiting for them from Microsoft – a whopping 20 Microsoft points.

When Microsoft first announced the Xbox Live Rewards program it sounded exciting and interesting. Then we saw it. A one percent discount for some and a two percent discount for others isn't exactly a mindblowing bonus. But we all kind of held out hope for something cool from the promised birthday gift – maybe a chunk of points or a free Avatar item? No such luck.

Instead, Microsoft shelled out 20 points. That's enough to buy 1/4 of the lowest priced Indie games or the real world equivalent of a quarter. Honestly, this promotion may be hurting Microsoft more than it's helping.

‘Halo 4’ is Complete – Headed to Microsoft Certification

And with that, work can begin on bug fixes, updates and ‘Halo 5.’

It’s official. Well over a month before the game ships, ‘Halo 4’ is complete. Franchise director Frank O'Connor says that the game, which was created over three years by a team of around 300 people, is finally finished and on its way to Microsoft for certification.

So what’s next for 343 and the Halo games? ‘Halo 5,’ of course. The next installment in the series is expected to launch on Microsoft’s next console, as evidenced by job listings asking for people to make next gen visuals.

Xbox Live Fall Update Beta Signups are Live

The update includes features like Internet Explorer, personalized recommendations and better category discovery features.

If you’re looking to try out the latest and, potentially, greatest from Microsoft, it’s time to sign up now. The forthcoming fall update for the Xbox 360 dashboard has just entered the Beta phase and Microsoft is ready to start distributing it.

There are a variety of feature updates, including Internet Explorer for Xbox and personalized dashboard recommendations, but the most valuable may be a new category search and discovery feature. Finding quality Arcade games is a challenge, but worthwhile Indie games are even harder to discover.

You can sign up now though you’ll have to agree to a nondisclosure agreement in order to participate.

'Halo 4' Special Edition Xbox 360 is On the Way

Fri Jul 13, 2012 at 01:30 PM ET
Tags: Halo 4, Xbox 360 (all tags)

The price is looking to come in at $399 if the quickly pulled listing is correct.

A brand new special edition 'Halo 4' Xbox was listed in Microsoft's online store today and was quickly pulled. While this sort of leak is usually unreliable, the fact that it was Microsoft that posted it lends some credence to its legitimacy.

The system is slated to pack a 320GB hard drive, two controllers, special sound effects when you turn on and off the console, a headset, and some free downloadables. Oh, and a copy of 'Halo 4' of course.

The price listed was $399, which seems just about right for the system and pack-ins. Hopefully we'll see this back up there soon.

The $99 Xbox 360/Kinect Bundle Hits Best Buy and GameStop

Tue Jun 26, 2012 at 01:30 PM ET
Tags: Microsoft, Xbox 360, Kinect, Best Buy, GameStop (all tags)

You'll be spending a little extra over time, but the upfront investment is nice and cheap.

Microsoft's $99 Xbox 360/Kinect bundle has finally left the Microsoft store and entered retail locations. Both Best Buy and GameStop are now carrying the bundle, which gets you into an Xbox 360 at an incredibly low initial investment of $99. The catch, of course, is that you'll be paying a two year subscription fee at $15 a month.

The end cost of the system and the Xbox Live subscription comes to $460, which is not too terribly much more than if you bought the 360 at a normal price and got cheap Xbox Live vouchers online. The price difference is between $60 and $100, but for folks that don't want to – or can't – spend $300 on a system up front, this might be a nice way to go.
