Wed Dec 29, 2010 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Sears, Kmart, Roxio, Sonic Solutions, Streaming (all tags)
The companies are working on a roll-out to make the service available on different devices.
The streaming game is big, and its only just begun. Companies from all walks are jumping into it, including Best Buy, OnLive, and now Sears.
Sears and Kmart launched their new movie service Alphaline this week. Alphaline is a combined effort with Sonic Solutions and is on the same Roxio platform as many others. Using the service you'll be able to rent and buy HD movies for viewing.
Now that the service has launched, there need to be devices out there that can use it. That's not far in the future, according to Sears. "We'll continue to increase the reach and flexibility of the Alphaline Entertainment service," says Sears and Kmart president Karen Austin, "by providing consumers on-demand access to the latest entertainment from a range of home and mobile electronics."
You can check out the new service for yourself at Alphaline.

Hundreds of consumer electronic devices will be using Roxio this fall.
The guys at Sonic Solutions have found a great deal of success in their Roxio platform. Sure, the Roxio service didn't take off like Netflix did, but Sonic Solutions is not powering a variety of different web based video offerings.
Companies like Blockbuster and Best Buy use the Roxio backbone for their sales and rentals, and that's big business.
Sonic announced today hundreds of new devices would be carrying the Roxio distribution platform this holiday season. The list of makers includes the usual suspects like LG, Onkyo and Panasonic, but also some unexpected names like Sylvania, Memorex and HTC.

Boxee Partners with Sonic Solutions
Mon Jun 21, 2010 at 02:30 PM ETTags: Boxee, Sonic Solutions, Best Buy, Blockbuster, Roxio, Streaming (all tags)
The new arrangement will create a whole new line of content for Boxee users.
Sonic Solutions is the company behind Best Buy's CinemaNow service, Blockbuster's video on demand service, and a few others too. It's a pretty big name in the digital delivery world.
And that's why Boxee has licensed the RoxioNow entertainment platform. The addition of the Roxio service is huge, since it will allow users of both the Boxee Box and the standalone Boxee software to access all new content that includes HD movies with 5.1 surround sound.
If that's not cool enough, the RoxioNow service is friendly with a lot of different devices, like PCs, DVRs and mobile devices. If you rent a movie in one place, you can watch it wherever you like. Not a bad setup.
Boxee is in the midst of integrating RoxioNowand according to the official Boxee blog, we'll see everything Roxio up and running by the time the Boxee Box ships this November.

Digital Delivery of 3-D Coming Soon to RoxioNow
Tue May 04, 2010 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Sonic Solutions, 3D, Industry Trends, RoxioNow (all tags)
Sonic Solutions has just announced a program to fully support what they're calling the next big thing in home video.
Sonic Solutions launched their new "Total 3-D" initiative today, designed to make them a leader in 3-D video.
To start with, Sonic Solutions has been working to develop new 3-D disc authoring technologies. They'll be behind a lot of the Blu-rays that you see hitting shelves, in one way or another. But it's the consumer side that's really interesting.
Sonic says that the RoxioNow service (formerly CinemaNow) is primed and ready to start delivering 3-D content. It's already powering 3-D displays in storefronts, all Sonic is waiting for now is the consumer content.
There's also Video Lab 3D, which allows users to turn their 3-D content into standard DVDs for playback on compatible devices.
"Our 'Total 3D' initiative is the next step in our Hollywood-to-Home strategy," says Sonic's Mark Ely. "The expertise we gain on the professional side allows us to engineer better consumer products with higher performance and broader compatibility."

Movies To Be Sold On USB Drives This Holiday Season
Fri Jul 24, 2009 at 09:00 AM ETTags: Industry Trends, Sonic Solutions (all tags)
Sonic Solutions and Wildvine to sell movies on USB movie drives.
In what appears to be an effort to meet with consumer demand for digital copies while keeping retail stores in the loop, Sonic Solutions and Wildvine have announced plans to release movies on USB drives. Entitled CinemaNow USB Movie Drives, the dongles will provide high quality playback while offering convenience to the customer.
Of course the issue of Digital Rights Management (DRM) can’t be ignored. In an effort to combat piracy, the files will play via an integrated media player, and while customers will be able to download additional digital copies, the number of devices on which they can play the video be limited to five.
No specifics have been given given as to the quality of the video or the cost of the drives, but we can expect to see them ready this holiday season.

Download 3D Movies At Home!
Wed Jul 22, 2009 at 12:00 PM ETTags: 3D, Industry Trends, Sonic Solutions (all tags)
CinemaNow, Sonic Solutions work to bring 3D to PCs, TVs.
Sometimes technology moves amazingly quickly. Just 10 years ago, the idea of downloading a movie in a matter of minutes seemed impossible, email was still a bit too niche for professional communication, and flying cars still hadn’t hit the market. Scratch that last one. Some technology seems to move very slowly, and the 3D movie is a prime example.
Finally though, the dream of every boy and girl raised in the 50s is coming true, 3D movies in the home are a reality. According to a recent press release, CinemaNow will be working with Nvida, Mitusbishi and Samsung, in an aim to bring 3D movies to their popular download service.
“Ultimately, we believe Blu-ray will be the dominant format for the distribution of 3D content” commented Michael DiMaria, VP of Product Management for CinemaNow. While many PCs and televisions are 3D capable already, there is a demand for 3D content, but Blu-ray publishers have yet to agree on a technology standard. That’s where CinemaNow comes in. "We see an opportunity to bridge that time gap.” said DiMaria “We think anyone who's buying this technology, especially in the early-adopter stages, they're going to want to throw at it what they can find. We want to make sure our player can play back whatever content someone reasonably has”
