PS3 'Battlefield 3' Owners are Getting Their Free 'Battlefield 1943' in December
Mon Nov 28, 2011 at 10:30 AM ETTags: Battlefield, Battlefield 3, Battlefield 1943, EA, Gamer Victories (all tags)
All the press, angry fans and lawsuit seem to have worked.
Here are the facts. EA promised PS3 players a free copy of 'Battlefield 1943' when they purchased 'Battlefield 3.' EA did not give PS3 players said free copy. PS3 players got pissed and filed a class action suit.
All of the outrage won out - everyone that buys a copy of 'Battlefield 3' for the PS3 is now eligible for that free download of 'Battlefield 1943.' The way you have to go about getting it is a bit of a pain though.
You'll need to visit EA's smug post that has full details on the process. Essentially, you need to activate your 'Battlefield 3' online pass, register with EA's 'Battlefield 1943' redemption site, get a voucher and then put in the code. Ugh.
EA says the reason they're giving out the game for free is because "there have been some misunderstandings around Battlefield 1943 and Battlefield 3," which seems to imply that it's the fault of the gamers. Hey EA, just say you're sorry. Oh, and don't mess with gamers again. We've moved beyond starting useless online petitions.

Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Missing 'Battlefield 1943' Copies With 'Battlefield 3'

EA failed to deliver on a promise they made and didn't properly tell anyone beforehand. This has not made people happy.
Gamers tend to be an easily angered bunch. Changing a character's look or trying something new can cause a developer's forums to explode. When every little thing provokes a giant reaction, it makes things a little hard to gage.
There was plenty of that anger leveled at EA recently when they failed to include a copy of 'Battlefield 1943' with every PS3 copy of 'Battlefield 3,' something they promised back in June. Worse, EA failed to announce that this change had occurred, leaving fans to assume that everything was on track.
Angry fans, of course, took to forums and social networking sites, but some took it farther than that and filed a class action lawsuit over the missing content. The suit isn't seeking money like most class action suits - it's just trying to get those 'Battlefield 1943' copies that were supposed to be there in the first place.

PS3 Version of 'Battlefield 3' Lacks 'Battlefield 1943' Bonus

DICE is attempting to make up for the issue, but their fix isn't exactly compelling.
If you can remember back to June of this year, you'll recall an E3 announcement that promised a few exclusives to PS3 owners. One of those exclusives was to be a free copy of 'Battlefield 1943' with the purchase of 'Battlefield 3.'
Then comes October 24th, when 'Battlefield' fans can finally get their mitts on the new game. PS3 owners took the game home, opened it, popped it in their system and - guess what - no 'Battlefield 1943.'
DICE, the group that developed the game, is making a peace offering. Instead of getting a free copy of 'Battlefield 1943,' all 'Battlefield 3' expansions are being made available to PS3 owners early. So, no free game, but you can pay for the new stuff earlier. Great.
