'Arrested Development' is Coming Back in 2013 - Exclusive to Netflix

This could mean big things for streaming video.
Netflix has a niche when it comes to streaming content. They have a lot to offer at a very low price, but almost none of it is new. It's a business model that's been working out nicely for them, but the company strives for more. They're after original, exclusive content and they're starting to get it.
Over the weekend, Netflix announced that the canceled Fox comedy 'Arrested Development' would be returning to production and coming straight to Netflix without stopping at TV on the way. 10 new episodes will be debuting exclusively on Netflix starting in 2013.
Earlier this year, Netflix signed the original show 'House of Cards' for a 2012 release. They outbid HBO for the series in hopes of increasing their subscriber base. Netflix trumped quite a few broadcasters and cable channels on the return of 'Arrested Development' and expects a significant return on its investment.
If 'House of Cards' and 'Arrested Development' are as successful as Netflix wants them to be, it could mean very big things for Netflix and for streaming video in general.

Netflix Plans European Expansion - Hires Exec for Original Content Acquisition
Tue Oct 25, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Netflix, Arrested Development (all tags)
This may or may not come as much of a surprise, but Netflix wants to keep getting bigger.
Hard to believe, but Netflix is still on the rise, and despite recent PR and tactical disasters, the people in charge are trying to make sure it stays that way. After branching out to Latin America, they've decided to expand overseas to the UK and Ireland. It's a big move, which is what Netflix seems to be really into these days, but if successful it could pay huge dividends. The UK launch is expected in early 2012.
In addition to announcing this new expansion, the company has hired on a new executive in charge of original content acquisition. The new exec - Peter Friedlander, formerly of Playtone - will be focusing his efforts on shows produced exclusively for Netflix.
We already know that Netflix is going to be the only place to check out 'House of Cards,' but they're making plays for new episodes of 'Reno 911!' and of course 'Arrested Development' as well. Whether this change in focus works or not could have a huge influence on the future of the company, and will definitely affect the way that Netflix is seen in the eyes of consumers.

10 New Episodes of 'Arrested Development' are In the Works - Netflix Among Bidders
Tue Oct 04, 2011 at 09:00 AM ETTags: Arrested Development, Netflix (all tags)
The much loved cult comedy is finally coming back to the air, or to streaming.
'Arrested Development' fans - in other words, pretty much anyone who has seen the show - are in for a treat. Creator Michael Hurwitz has announced that 10 new episodes are in the works. After talk of a film for quite some time, it's great news that we're getting even more 'Arrested Development' than originally promised.
There are a few different bidders on the new episodes of the show, including Showtime and, more interestingly, Netflix. This pickup could be incredible for Netflix, a service that's known more for watching older content than new.
Netflix has already outbid other companies on 'House of Cards,' but picking up 'Arrested Development' would be huge, not just for the streaming service, but for digital distribution in general. After all, this would be the first network show to make the switch from TV to streaming exclusively. And face it folks, Netflix needs a bit of positive press BADLY!
