Lionsgate is preparing Renny Harlin's horror flick The Strangers: Chapter 1 for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook, and Blu-ray on July 23. The SteelBook is exclusive to Walmart and Digital will be available on July 16.

Directed by Cliffhanger's Renny Harlan, the movie stars Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez and is based on The Strangers by Bryan Bertino. The Blu-ray and the 4K editions for the film include Dolby Atmos soundtracks and the 4K UHDs will be presented in Dolby Vision.

After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1, the chilling first entry of this horror feature-film series from master director Renny Harlin.

One of Martin Scorsese's wildest films of the 90s featuring a gleefully unhinged Nicolas Cage is coming to 4K UHD & Blu-ray. A notable box office miss, the film has grown something of a cult following over the years. But sadly, it's only been available on DVD. That all changes this September. 

While this press release was a bit vague about the specs, we do know Bringing out the Dead will debut with a new Atmos audio mix. Nothing is mentioned about the HDR grade but since this is Paramount, expect Dolby Vision as well. We'll also be getting some impressive bonus features to dig through! In the meantime, we've put in requests for more information and we'll update listings as it comes in ASAP.

The 2023 box office has been a brutal run for some of the biggest movies of the year. Even with high praise from critics and fans, George Miller's Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga found itself on the wrong side of the wasteland. Now it rides onto the glory of physical media on August 13th. 

Considering the critical praise and the massive marketing campaign, it'll be something of a mystery as to why Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga missed at the global box office - but sadly it did. Now, after a sadly anemic run in theaters, George Miller's latest epic trip to the Wasteland will explode onto 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, SteelBook, and Blu-ray before the summer heat wears off. I for one dug the hell out of this film. It's a different beast than Fury Road, its pace and thrust were on a different scale, but Hemsworth was wild as our villain, I thought Anya Taylor-Joy held her own, and I dug how well this one dovetailed into Fury Road while also connecting bits and pieces to the 2015 Mad Max game. Judging from the back cover art on Amazon, it looks like we'll have Doby Vision HDR and Atmos for the 4K disc.

The critically-acclaimed 1982 comedy special Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip is getting a 4K UHD Blu-ray release from Sony on September 10. 

The iconic performance from the iconic comedian will be enjoyed by generations old and new when it makes its 4K debut this September in a package that will be presented in Dolby Vision HDR. The release will also include a digital copy.

If Richard Pryor were accused of being the funniest man in America, this film of his incredible stage act would be Exhibit A. It is proof beyond the shadow of a doubt! Shot live at the Hollywood Palladium, the film captures all the excitement, lunacy and electric force of a Pryor performance. And though he's the only star of this hilarious show, he's never alone on stage. From Radio Silence, the directors of recent hits Scream VI and Ready of Not comes Abigail. A fun fresh spin on the home invasion horror sub-genre, the film's marketing campaign might have done more damage than good as it struggled to find a blood-filled audience at the box office. Now it hits streamers on June 25th with a domestic Blu-ray release on July 9th.  

This being a Universal genre film title, it's only a matter of time before a 4K disc of Abigail arrives from a foreign market or licensed from someone like Scream Factory. It's frustrating Universal continues this trend for 4K collectors, but for those rocking out to 1080p, your Blu-ray is on the way! This disc comes in with an excellent selection of bonus features and some solid specs. I love in these press releases when the marketing describes bonus features as "never before seen" when it's the first disc release.

As physical media collectors well know, The Criterion Collection can be rather eclectic with their selections. Sometimes you get your true Hollywood classic. Sometimes you get a great piece of French of Japanese cinema. Occasionally you get one hell of an incredible box set. As Sony continues their ongoing Columbia Pictures centennial celebration, they also continue to chip away from the Columbia Classics boxset exclusive titles. The latest is Penny Marshall's terrific drama about the Women's Baseball League during WWII. Not only is it getting a solo release (finally), but it's also seeing a Dolby Vision HDR Upgrade. 

Sony continues its run of showing other studios how to properly celebrate a 100th Anniversary bringing another catalog out to the 4K format. Sure, A League of Their Own isn't a "new" title on the 4K format, but it was one that's been locked away in the OOP Columbia Classics Vol 1 collection for so long some folks out there might have forgotten about it! While it's great they're splitting the disc off from the box set, it's even better they're offering a Dolby Vision upgrade for those who waited it out. Now these DV upgrades haven't always yielded night and day improvements. This film already looked pretty fabulous in 4K HDR10, so it'll be interesting to see how well this one turns out.

The 1966 crime drama Door-to-Door Maniac (first released in 1961 as Five Minutes to Live) featuring Johnny Cash in his film debut is coming Blu-ray from Film Masters on August 27.

The Blu-ray will also include Aram Katcher's little-known Right Hand of the Devil (1963) on a second disc.

Originally released in 1961 as Five Minutes to Live, this low-budget crime drama was re-released in 1966 as Door-to-Door Maniac. Fred narrates the film in flashback, detailing a suburban bank robbery that goes awry. As part of a simple plan, he hires a hard-up, psychotic hood, Johnny Cabot, to take the wife of the bank's vice president hostage in her own home. What follows is a robbery gone awry in every way! You won't want to miss this gem whose original poster proclaimed, A woman's price drops fast as the time limit ticks away!

Noted for a great performance by Cash in his first film role—the aspiring actor helped finance the film in hopes of catching his big break—Door-to-Door Maniac also stars Donald Woods, Cay Forester and Pamela Mason. Also look for a very young Ron Howard in a small role and Vic Tayback (best known as Mel from the TV show, Alice).

In the little-known film Right Hand of the Devil, director Aram Katcher makes his bid to become the next Hitchcock. While prominent movie director he is not, Turkish-born Katcher does star in the film ... and not just on-screen. Producer, story creator, editor, title designer and costume designer are just some of the other roles he took on with his magnum opus … Later, he reportedly destroyed all the 35mm elements. This new 4K scan comes from a rare 16mm reduction print, from the collection of noted film historian and producer Samuel M. Sherman, who tried to work with Katcher to re-release the film.

Katcher leads the cast as an ingenious criminal mastermind who hires a motley crew of questionable henchmen. Their target? A sports arena. Along the way and critical to their plans, he seduces a middle-aged cashier, but she is not as easily convinced as expected! Will Katcher triumph in his hard-won leading role?

Originally released in 1961 as Five Minutes to Live, this low-budget crime drama was re-released in 1966 as Door-to-Door Maniac. Fred narrates the film in flashback, detailing a suburban bank robbery that goes awry. As part of a simple plan, he hires a hard-up, psychotic hood, Johnny Cabot, to take the wife of the bank's vice president hostage in her own home. What follows is a robbery gone awry in every way! You won't want to miss this gem whose original poster proclaimed, A woman's price drops fast as the time limit ticks away!

Noted for a great performance by Cash in his first film role—the aspiring actor helped finance the film in hopes of catching his big break—Door-to-Door Maniac also stars Donald Woods, Cay Forester and Pamela Mason. Also look for a very young Ron Howard in a small role and Vic Tayback (best known as Mel from the TV show, Alice).

Right Hand of the Devil (1963):

In the little-known film Right Hand of the Devil, director Aram Katcher makes his bid to become the next Hitchcock. While prominent movie director he is not, Turkish-born Katcher does star in the film ... and not just on-screen. Producer, story creator, editor, title designer and costume designer are just some of the other roles he took on with his magnum opus … Later, he reportedly destroyed all the 35mm elements. This new 4K scan comes from a rare 16mm reduction print, from the collection of noted film historian and producer Samuel M. Sherman, who tried to work with Katcher to re-release the film.

Katcher leads the cast as an ingenious criminal mastermind who hires a motley crew of questionable henchmen. Their target? A sports arena. Along the way and critical to their plans, he seduces a middle-aged cashier, but she is not as easily convinced as expected! Will Katcher triumph in his hard-won leading role?

The Warner Archive Collection has announced and detailed their next batch of Blu-ray releases.  They are Northwest Passage (1940), Idiot's Delight (1939), Harum Scarum (1965), Marie: A True Story (1985),  The Stars Fell on Henrietta (1995), War of the Buttons (1994), and an animated double-feature - Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost/Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders (1999/2000).  All will be available for purchase on July 30.

First up we have King Vidor's classic 1940 adventure Northwest Passage starring Spencer Tracy, Robert Young, and Ruth Hussey.

Spencer Tracy and a stellar supporting cast grab muskets, gun powder and knives, and head out for adventure in Northwest Passage, a lavish Technicolor® retelling of French and Indian War heroics, based on Kenneth Roberts’ best seller. Tracy plays a true-life explorer Major Robert Rogers, the intrepid leader of the celebrated Roberts’ Rangers fighting force that took on one of the most challenging expeditions in military history. Tracy’s portrayal brilliantly captures the American pioneering spirit, but he had to muster up his own will to carry it off. “It isn’t exactly fun to work in bitter cold and be sloshing through mud all day” he said. For twelve grueling weeks of location shooting, he endured trapsing through swamps, crossing rapids, and climbing mountains. Next is another classic, Clarence Brown's 1939 romantic comedy Idiot's Delight starring Norma Shearer and Clark Gable.

M-G-M legends Norma Shearer and Clark Gable star in Clarence Brown’s smashing adaptation of Robert E. Sherwood’s Pulitzer prize-winning play. They first meet in Omaha. They meet again years later at the Swiss border…and at the edge of World War II. Gable as smalltime hoofer Harry Van and Shearer as his one-time honey Irene, now passing herself off as a Russian aristocrat and clinging to the arm of a munitions baron who strike sparks in this witty, cogent clash of love and war, which was one of M-G-M’s many 1939 instant classics. Idiot’s Delight, released in the same year as Gone with the Wind, shows Gable at his rakish, manly, movie-star best. The most memorable scene features Gable’s performance “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, a wise-guy song-and-dance routine to the Irving Berlin classic that ends with the King leaping gracefully into the arms of a chorus line of peroxide cuties.
