Sony Reveals First Ultra HD Blu-ray Titles, Release Date Set for Early 2016[teaser]The studio has announced its first batch of Ultra HD Blu-ray titles, including 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' and 'Hancock.' [/teaser] Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has unveiled its initial lineup of Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs. The first wave of Sony Ultra Blu-ray titles will include 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2,' 'Salt,' 'Hancock,' 'Chappie,' 'Pineapple Express,' and 'The Smurfs 2.' "By some estimates, consumers will own over 100 million Ultra HD television sets by 2019. Sony Pictures' 4K Ultra HD Discs will deliver consumers the ultimate home theater experience, with stunning picture and sound quality," said SPHE president, Man Jit Singh. Singh continued, "Ten years ago this month, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment authored the world’s first feature film on Blu-ray Disc™, and we continue to bring consumers the most innovative, immersive home entertainment experiences available." Sony's Ultra HD Blu-ray titles will feature a resolution of 3840x2160 with HDR (high dynamic range), offering four times the resolution of HD along with superior contrast and colors on supported displays. In addition, many titles will also include support for immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The initial collection of announced discs will be followed by more Sony new releases, TV shows, and classic films. The studio's library of 4K content includes potential Ultra HD titles like 'Fury,' 'Captain Phillips,' 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,' 'Men In Black,' 'Ghostbusters,' 'The Fifth Element,' 'Bad Boys,' 'The Da Vinci Code,' 'Bram Stoker's Dracula,' 'Leon: The Professional,' 'Lawrence Of Arabia,' 'The Bridge on the River Kwai,' 'The Guns of Navarone,' 'Taxi Driver,' 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,' and more. Full specs, exact release dates, and suggested list prices for Sony's first Ultra HD Blu-rays have not been detailed yet, but the discs are set to debut in early 2016. In addition to Sony, 20th Century Fox previously announced its own launch lineup of Ultra HD Blu-rays as well. Samsung Gear VR Headset Now Up for Pre-Order, Price Set at $99[teaser]The first consumer version of the Gear VR is now available for pre-order. The mobile headset is compatible with a variety of smartphones, offering virtual reality film and gaming content. Amazon Brings Echo Smart Speaker to Retail Stores[teaser]The voice controlled speaker will be available in retail stores. [/teaser] Amazon has announced plans to begin selling its Echo speaker in select retail stores. The Echo is a cylindrical speaker system with 360° omni-directional audio and voice-controlled commands, offering instant information and music. "Amazon Echo is a must-have gift this holiday season, and we’re excited to work with retailers across the country to make Echo available to their customers," said Greg Hart, Vice President, Amazon Echo and Alexa Voice Services. "Using only your voice to play music, control your lights, and ask questions is magical, so it’s great that people will be able to visit local stores and try it for themselves." Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Echo will expand to more than 3,000 stores, including select locations of The Home Depot, Staples, Sears, Brookstone, RadioShack, Fred Meyer, P.C. Richard & Son, and more. The speaker is an always-on device that uses Wi-Fi to connect to the cloud through Amazon Web Services.
