Attention all ‘Lost’ fans. I’m sure that, by now, you’ve all heard that the upcoming Season 6 Blu-ray (and DVD for that matter) box sets will include a brand new extra scene that takes place sometime after the events of the series finale. Well, now ABC has released a publicity still from that footage. Spoiler Alert: There’s a desk lamp in it! OMG! Follow us after the break to see the full, uncensored photo, complete with shocking full-frontal nudity… from the desk lamp, of course.
Here’s what the press release has to say:
Please find attached/below a first look photo from the original, brand new 12-minute LOST chapter called “New Man In Charge” which offers a look at what Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and Ben (Michael Emerson) do as the new Island overseers.
This bonus feature will be available on both LOST: THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON and LOST: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION which debuts on Blu-ray & DVD on August 24, 2010.

So, the good news: It’s confirmed that this extra scene will be included on both the separate Season 6 box set and the larger Complete Collection package. We know that there will be some bonus features exclusive to the more expensive set. Initial speculation was that Disney and ABC were planning to gouge fans into rebuying the earlier five seasons to see this critical extra scene. Fortunately, that’s not the case. I’m sure that the exclusives will be mostly insubstantial EPK featurettes and the like.
As for the photo… Like all things ‘Lost’, it opens up so many mysteries: Why is Ben talking to guys in DHARMA jumpsuits? From the uniforms, their names seem to be Hector and Glen. (I can’t make out Hector’s job title. Maintenance?) Are they ghosts on the island haunting him?
Why does Ben appear to be dressed in his high school teacher clothes from the flash-sideways storyline? What’s with the “19” spray painted on the wall? (That’s not one of “the numbers.”) Are those DHARMA beer cans in the background, or just canned food? What’s that weird canister thing on a stand behind Ben? What are the papers on the table behind Hector?
If you look closely, there’s something printed or ingrained on the shelf behind Ben. The text is backwards. Looks like “Heidelber” and then there’s something blocking the rest. Heildelberg, as in the city in Germany, perhaps? There’s also a company by that name that manufactures printing presses.
So many, many clues. And I’m sure the scene will give us answers to precisely none of them.
All we really know for sure about the scene is that it will concern Hurley and Ben during their time as the Island’s new protectors. And, from this photo, folks from DHARMA are somehow involved.
The studio’s PR department has claimed that the scene will provide “answers” of some sort. To what, it won’t say. Producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof promised during one of their official podcasts that they would eventually explain the mystery of the DHARMA air drops at some point after the series had concluded. Perhaps that’s what this is about.
I’m not getting my hopes up for any huge revelation that will force me to reconsider anything I know about the show. I expect this scene to be more like the “Missing Pieces” webisodes that were included with the Season 4 box set. Those were just extra character moments that didn’t make it into the show. This will probably be like that. I’m going to keep my expectations in check. I suggest all fans do the same.
