LG Launches a New "HD Soundbar"

It offers 2.1 channel audio thanks to a wireless sub.

If you don't have the room for a full 5.1 channel audio setup, or you're just a little low on cash, you can still get better audio. The solution is the soundbar, a bar of speakers designed to sit under your speakers and provide virtual surround.

LG's latest, the LSB316, is definitely designed to fit into a lower price bracket. It offers up six 2.5 inch speaker drivers with a total of 280 watts between them. It's also equipped with a wireless subwoofer to help out with those low frequencies.

"The LSB316 not only pumps up the audio performance of programming on TV," says LG's Tim Alessi, "but also brings a richer audio experience to music in an easy to set up and use package."

There's been no mention of availability or price for the LSB316, but we expect to hear more in early January.

Sony Unveils a Soundbar Aimed at PS3 Users

But, you know, there's no reason you couldn't use it for listening to other things too.

The CECH-ZVS1 is a soundbar that's being marketed directly to PS3 owners, which seems like a really strange idea. Most soundbars and home theater systems are aimed at the general populous, but this one's got one specific target in mind.

For the most part, it's not a bad looking bar. For $200, you get a pair of 50mm speakers and a pair of 90mm speakers to cover the main range of sound, while a total of six speakers, four of which are passive, pick up the bass.

It decodes Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG-2 and Linear PCM two-channel audio, and you can hook your system in via analog or digital optical ports.

The CECH-ZVS1 has two features – Night Mode and Dialog Mode – that are designed to keep voices in games and movies audible while at low volumes.

Sony's new soundbar will be available this fall.

They've got HDMI 1.4 outputs, can pass 3D right through, and the HTB500 even sports a wireless sub.

The first ever soundbars from Panasonic, who prefer the term "surroundbar," are about what you'd expect. They're nice and slim and fit nicely in front of a TV. They're geared towards folks who aren't looking for a full surround system, and they're simple to set up.

You'll get clear dialogue with the SC-HTB10 and SC-HTB500 thanks to a bamboo cone speaker design and a Clear-Mode Dialogue feature which acts as a virtual center channel.

The HTB10 measures 31.5 inches wide and is designed for use with televisions measuring up to 42 inches. The HTB500 is built for bigger sets, and unlike the 10, it comes with a wireless subwoofer to fully flush out the sound.

You'll be able to get the HTB10 this month for a retail price of $199, while the $349 SC-HTB500 won't be available until August.
