Sony is Shutting Down Four MMOs in March

On the plus side, you've probably never played them.

The end of an MMO is a sad time for gamers that have dedicated time to creating a character, questing for advancement and building friendships. The games Sony is about to close down aren't the most popular, but dedicated player bases are about to lose it all.

The games being killed off are 'Cosmic Rift,' 'Star Chamber: The Harbinger Saga,' 'Infantry' and the PlayStation 2 title 'EverQuest Online Adventures.' Anyone who currently plays these games will be compensated a bit in the form of a 3 month Gold subscription to both 'EverQuest' and 'EverQuest II'.

"Each of these games shares a special place in both ours and our players' hearts," says Sony Online Entertainment."We would like to thank our players for their loyalty and for sharing the good times on these games. It's been a blast."

'EverQuest' Will go Free-to-Play in March

After 13 years, 'EverQuest' is going to be available absolutely free.

Back in December, 'EverQuest II' changed over to a free-to-play model while its predecessor still chugged on. Today it was announced that the original 'EverQuest' will be doing the same in just a few months.

The changeover will occur in March, marking the 13th birthday of the game. That's 13 years of killing baddies, dragging corpses, shouting "train to zone," begging for SOW and trading in the East Commons tunnel.

Considering the fate that has befallen so many MMOs, it's surprising that 'EverQuest' has lasted this long without changing its business model over. Then again, it was the first MMO to really hit. Back then we weren't looking for a WoW killer - each new entry in the genre was hailed as an EQ killer. 'Warcraft' definitely surpassed it, but clearly EQ wouldn't die.

If you want to jump back into the world of Norrath you can do so free starting in March.

A special mission to defeat Scarecrow will be automatically issued to 'DC Universe' players of all levels.

The holidays are a really fun time to play games with a strong online presence, and that goes double for MMOs. There's always something interesting in store, and this year is no exception.

The folks at Sony Online Entertainment are adding holiday fun to a good chunk of their online titles, including 'DC Universe,' which gets an added Scarecrow encounter, new Halloween themed pets, a pumpkin head of your own and plenty of other loot that you'll only be able to get until November 7th.

'EverQuest' is getting a few tricks, like throwable pumpkins, and treats, like a special aura. For those that prefer 'EQII,' there will be Halloween themed quests and items aplenty. You'll even get some goodies just for logging on. 'Free Realms' players will be able to get costumes, enter a dance competition and even buy themselves a special werewolf mount.

Special Halloween events will also be occurring for players of 'Magic: The Gathering - Tactics,' 'PoxNora,' and 'Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures.'
