Wow, this is a very slow week for new Blu-ray releases. Like, ridiculously slow, even for this time of year. Only one major title will hit store shelves today. While some of the catalog titles look interesting to me, I doubt that any of them will be big sellers. I suppose our wallets needed a break.

My home theater room had gotten out of control. I’d long since run out of enough shelving space to hold my entire movie collection, and had allowed stacks of new discs to pile up all around me. The room was an unsightly mess, and I’d been reluctant to do anything about it for entirely foolish reasons (mostly laziness). Finally, I decided to take action before the clutter overwhelmed and swallowed me whole, which was beginning to seem like a very real possibility.

“Deepest, bluest, my hat is like a shark’s fin…” Much like LL Cool J’s perplexing theme song lyrics, the reason why I put ‘Deep Blue Sea’ in the Blu-ray player last week is just as mystifying, especially to me. There it was, still on my shelf, still factory sealed, only ‘Cyrus‘ and ‘The Dark Crystal‘ away from Renny Harlin’s other schlock masterpiece ‘Cutthroat Island‘. I had to watch it.

I find it vaguely interesting that there are basically no love- or romance-themed movies being released on Blu-ray this Valentine’s Day (unless you’re the kind of sicko who finds ‘The Human Centipede’ romantic). We seem to have gotten all of those out of the way last week. Today’s focus falls instead to some of last year’s critically acclaimed films that were unfortunately overlooked by both audiences and awards organizations. Well, those and the ‘Human Centipede’ sequel.
