April has been a busy month for the industry.  New movies have been announced for Blu-ray, Philips has left the HDTV business, Sony shipped a huge amount of new TVs and a new videogame system was announced by Nintendo.  It's a lot to keep up with, but that's what the High-Def Digest-Digest is all about.

  • Top 5/Bottom 5: Aaron Eckhart

Posted Tue Apr 19, 2011 at 12:35 PM PDT by

One of my favorite films from last year is hitting the Blu-ray shelves this week. It's a pretty sparse week for big releases, so hopefully quite a few people will pick up 'Rabbit Hole' and find the greatness therein. To celebrate the release of 'Rabbit Hole' we've put together another one of our Top 5 / Bottom 5 lists. This time 'Rabbit Hole's star Aaron Eckhart goes under the microscope. Which movies are his best, and which ones could have been better?

  • Top Ten INCREDIBLE Computer Animated Blu-rays

Posted Tue Apr 12, 2011 at 12:25 PM PDT by

Re-watching 'The Incredibles' over the weekend got me thinking about my love for animated films. Or more specifically, how a perfect Blu-ray is for this era for computer generated (CG) animation. For most CG animated films, we're getting direct digital outputs that have never seen a lazy projectionist, or been stored in the real world where artifacts and dust can build up or chemical dyes can fade. Sure, zeroes and ones have their own storage complications, but for now, these films are as perfect as they can possibly be. Which I think speaks to why so many of them are Reference or Demo Blu-rays.

  • Don Bluth: The Best of the Rest Not Yet On Blu-ray

Posted Tue Mar 29, 2011 at 12:50 PM PDT by

Celebrated animator Don Bluth left the Walt Disney Company in 1979. It's still easy to see the realistic animator's mark on Disney classics such as 'Sword in the Stone,' 'Robin Hood,' and 'The Jungle Book.' After he left Disney, he went off on his own, and animated many more classics that have yet to find their way to Blu-ray.

  • What Went Wrong With The Tourist?!

Posted Mon Mar 21, 2011 at 02:15 PM PDT by

The plan was foolproof, or so they thought. Get two of the biggest stars in the world, pair them in the same movie, and mix in some Hitchcockian action and intrigue. It will be like printing money. Right? So just how did 'The Tourist' go so wrong?

  • Is Clint Eastwood Overrated as a Director?

Posted Tue Mar 15, 2011 at 11:50 AM PDT by

When 'Hereafter' hit theaters, I remember reading a post on Jim Emerson's Scanners blog (Emerson manages Roger Ebert's website), where he asked if one could truly pick a Clint Eastwood film out of a lineup. He acknowledged that he had no idea if Eastwood really had a significant visual or emotional style to his movies like say, Aronofsky or Lynch have. He went on to claim that certain filmmakers he knows consider Eastwood an amazing project manager, rather than an accomplished director. This got me to wondering, is Clint Eastwood overrated as a director?

  • Top 5/Bottom 5: Rachel McAdams

I had to do this list after our esteemed editor, Mike Attebery, confessed his secret love for Ms. McAdams and her acting. Truthfully, I don't think he has to be secretive about anything. She's cute, and given the right role, she flourishes. Sure there are a couple dark moments in her career, but when she's good. She's very good.
