DTS Virtual:X Tech Set to Debut with Yamaha YAS-207 Sound Bar[teaser]The new tech aims to deliver immersive sound without the need for height or surround speakers.[/teaser] DTS has announced a summer launch for its Virtual:X audio technology. The first DTS Virtual:X-ready products will begin hitting the market in July, starting with Yamaha's YAS-207 sound bar. "Our mission at DTS is to make the world sound better and deliver premium audio solutions to our partners and consumers," said Joanna Skrdlant, general manager, home audio at Xperi. "With the introduction of DTS Virtual:X technology, listeners can enjoy height and surround sound with simply a sound bar, making it more accessible and affordable than ever to experience the benefits of immersive audio at home." DTS Virtual:X is a new post-processing virtualization technology that can create an immersive audio experience without the need for ceiling speakers, upward firing drivers, or surround speakers. The process can support all input sources from stereo to a 7.1.4 layout, along with optimization for DTS codecs, including DTS:X. Likewise, the tech offers upmixing capabilities for legacy content. Virtual:X provides Virtual Height, Virtual Surround, Bass Enhancement, and Multiband Hard Limiter functions, and manufacturers can choose to use one or more features at the same time in their products. With sound bars, like the upcoming Yamaha YAS-207, this means that the tech can simulate up to 7.1.4 content through traditional speakers in the horizontal plane. Beyond DTS Virtual:X, the YAS-207 features a wireless subwoofer, HDMI input and HDMI output (with ARC) to pass 4K high dynamic range (HDR) video at up to 60 frames per second, a Clear Voice function, and Stereo Bluetooth. And in addition to sound bars, DTS Virtual:X tech will also be implemented into AV receivers this fall, and select TV models in early 2018. The Yamaha YAS-207 is set to start shipping in July for an MSRP of $299.95. Optoma Announces New 4K UHD HDR Projectors, Prices Start at $1,999[teaser]Two new affordable Ultra HD projectors have been revealed.[/teaser] Optoma has detailed the latest additions to its projector lineup. The collection includes the UHD60 and UHD65 UHD DLP projectors. Amazon Prime Video App Officially Heading to Apple TV Later this Year[teaser]Amazon's streaming service will finally arrive on Apple's media player.[/teaser] Following previous rumors, Apple and Amazon have confirmed plans to bring Amazon Prime Video to the Apple TV. An exact launch date has not been announced yet, but Prime Video is set to hit the TV app for all Apple TVs later this year. Currently, the only way for Amazon users to access Prime Video on the Apple TV is through an AirPlay connection to a separate iOS device with the app, like an iPhone or iPad. The lack of an official Amazon Prime Video app on the Apple TV until now has likely been the result of Amazon and Apple's competing interests in the media player and streaming services market. In fact, Amazon went as far as to remove the Apple TV from its online store in 2015 because of its lack of Prime Video support. Thankfully, this new confirmation seems to mark an end to those conflicts, though it's still unclear if the agreement will involve Amazon relisting the Apple TV for purchase on its website. The fourth-generation Apple TV uses the company's new tvOS designed specifically for the living room with access to a wide array of apps and games. Under the hood, the player is powered by a 64-bit A8 chip with Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi. Likewise, the set-top box is capable of full HD playback at 60 frames per second, but sadly does not include 4K Ultra HD support. The device also comes with an advanced remote with Bluetooth 4.0, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a glass touch surface for intuitive navigation, and a Siri voice search feature for comprehensive voice search results. The wireless home speaker offers support for Apple Music, voice control, home assistant functions, and advanced audio quality features. "Apple reinvented portable music with iPod and now HomePod will reinvent how we enjoy music wirelessly throughout our homes," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "HomePod packs powerful speaker technology, Siri intelligence and wireless access to the entire Apple Music library into a beautiful speaker that is less than 7 inches tall, can rock most any room with distortion free music and be a helpful assistant around your home." The HomePod measures just under 7-inches tall and uses a custom array of 7 beam-forming tweeters along with a 4-inch upward facing woofer. Under the hood, the speaker is powered by Apple's A8 chip providing bass management through real-time software modeling and other advanced audio functions, including the new spatial awareness feature. With spatial awareness, the HomePod is able to sense its position in a room -- whether it’s in a corner, on a table or in a bookshelf -- and then optimize its audio output for that location. The new models include the iPad Pro 10.5-inch and iPad Pro 12.9-inch. A 2017 version just launched as well, but since both panels are actually identical, the 2016 model presents a better value (while supplies last). 55" LG B6 OLED Ultra HD TV ($1,997) - Though also a 2016 model, the B6 still offers some of the best picture quality performance on the market, along with cheaper pricing compared to 2017 OLED models (while supplies last). The display offers Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, perfect blacks, wide color gamut playback, great viewing angles, and Ultra HD Premium Certification. LG SJ9 Sound Bar ($697) - LG's newest sound bar model is a compact Dolby Atmos solution for grads and dads who don't have the room for a fully immersive audio system. The sound bar features two powerful up-firing speakers and a wireless subwoofer to offer a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos experience. In addition, the device uses a Hi-Fi DAC with support for High Resolution audio. Pioneer FS-EB70 ELITE Network Sound Bar System ($1,000) - This premium 3.1.2 Channel sound bar is one of the only models to currently support both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats. FLAGSHIP Okay, Mom might have to help out with this last section, where we've put together some truly premium gear selections free from any cost or space considerations -- including 65-inch displays and full 7.1.4 systems. And though these choices might seem a little pricey for a Father's Day or graduation gift, after years of schooling or parenting, that special dad or grad in your life deserves only the best... don't they?! 65" LG SIGNATURE C7 OLED Ultra HD TV ($3,997) - Though it lacks some of the design flourishes and audio upgrades found on the company's more expensive models, this display just might be the best overall picture quality performer of 2017. Key features include HDR10 and Dolby Vision support (HLG via future firmware update), perfect black levels, wide color gamut playback with Triluminos tech, great viewing angles, and a unique Acoustic Surface sound system that produces audio directly from the screen itself. A smaller 55-inch model ($3,998) is also available. 65" Samsung QN65Q9 Ultra HD QLED TV ($5,998) - Samsung's flagship 2017 Ultra HD TV uses new metal quantum dot technology to deliver industry-leading color and brightness performance, offering support for a wide color gamut, 100 percent color volume, and a peak luminance between 1,500 and 2,000 nits. Likewise, the set includes HDR10 support and is among the first displays to include new HDR10+ support. The player is also Android TV Google Cast Ready and offers 4K Ultra HD playback at 60 fps. Likewise, the streaming box includes support for 10-bit color and HDR (high dynamic range) content. For this edition, we're covering a new ASUS premium monitor, live OTA streaming support for Plex, the arrival of DirecTV NOW on Roku devices, and the addition of Tidal to the KEF LS50W app. So, without further ado, here's a rundown of some of the latest gear and tech news: ASUS Details ROG Swift PG35VQ Monitor Asus has revealed its newest premium gaming monitor. The ROG Swift PG35VQ includes support for several advanced picture quality features, including high dynamic range and a wide color gamut. The monitor uses a 35-inch curved panel with an ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio, a UQWHD resolution of 3440x1440, and local dimming with 512 individual LED zones. In addition, the display includes HDR10 capabilities with a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits. Likewise, the screen uses quantum dot technology to support the wide DCI-P3 color space. Finally, a whopping 200Hz refresh rate is supported as well, along with NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology. Pricing and a release date for the ROG Swift PG35VQ have not been announced yet. The monitor now joins the previously announced ROG Swift PG27UQ gaming monitor which features a 27-inch flat-screen panel with a 4K resolution, quantum dots, wide color gamut support, HDR10, and a 144Hz refresh rate. Source: ASUS Plex Launches Live TV Support Building upon the addition of DVR support back in September, Plex has announced the launch of live OTA TV streaming capabilities. The feature is built directly into the Media Server, allowing users to watch live TV content anywhere in the world. With Plex Live TV and DVR, users can now watch and record high definition, over-the-air TV broadcasts from a supported digital tuner and antenna through Plex's intuitive and customizable program guide. The feature supports channels in more than 70 countries, including shows from all major US networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and CW, as well as local programming, news, and sports (encrypted channels currently not supported). Live TV streaming through Plex is now available through the company's Android TV and iOS apps, with support for more platforms to be added soon. Supported TV tuners include HDHomeRun tuners, and models from Hauppauge, AVerMedia, DVBLogic and more (complete list here). And several of these USB tuners can even work directly with the NVIDIA SHIELD, offering an all-in-one Media Server solution. In addition to live TV streaming, Plex has also announced several updates for its DVR feature, including new In-app DVR Management allowing users to browse the program guide, manage recordings, and more directly from the Android TV and iOS apps (with more to follow). Likewise, the core DVR engine has also been upgraded, making the scheduler even smarter with support for handling overlapping recordings on the same channel as well as the ability to watch live and record at the same time. The streaming service is now available through Roku TV 4K models, the Roku Ultra, Roku Premiere+, Roku Premiere, Roku Express, Roku Express+, Roku Streaming Stick (model 3600R), Roku 4, Roku 3 and Roku 2 (model 4210). DirecTV Now is a stand-alone streaming platform that provides access to a variety of live channels and on-demand content, including more than 20,000 on-demand shows and movies on over 120 live channels like ABC, AMC, BBC America, Bravo, Comedy Central, Discovery, Fox, Fox News Channel, FX, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, MSNBC, NBC, TBS, TNT and many others through several programming packages starting at $35 per month. In addition, a $10 per month plan with standard sound quality is also available. Meanwhile, the KEF LS50W is a complete and fully active wireless music system based on the company's LS50 speakers.
