The latest wave of Ultra HD Blu-rays up for preorder at Best Buy include monsters, gremlins, a phoenix, and other assorted unusual pets – plus whatever the hell crazy animals Elton John dressed up as during the 1970s.

I get that strutting out on stage in a sparkly baseball uniform was kind of an iconic moment for Elton John, and I’m sure it makes for a notable scene in his bio-pic starring Taron Egerton, but as home video cover art the image doesn’t really work for me. It doesn’t help that his back is turned to the camera and we can’t even see his face. Elton wore so many kooky outfits in his career prime, and the trailer shows off many of them so I know they’re in the movie. I have to imagine that something better than this could have been chosen.

It’s interesting to note that the SteelBook appears to contain only a 4k Ultra HD copy of the movie without a standard Blu-ray.

Best Buy doesn’t have any cover art available yet for the SteelBook edition of the Big G’s latest kaiju smackdown spectacle. The Zavvi listing shows a Pop Art design that’s a little garish but not terrible as far as Pop Art goes. It’s labeled “To Be Confirmed,” so the image may change, and there’s no guarantee that the American release will match it.

If not for the “Plus Exclusive SteelBook Packaging” label, I would assume that Best Buy just stuck the regular UHD artwork on the SteelBook page. It’s the same design, which rarely happens and leads me to conclude that this must be temp art.

Putting the words “Don’t Laugh” on the front cover to a comedy strikes me as a bad idea, but the sequel is said to be pretty middling, so maybe it’s appropriate.

Dark Phoenix

Also disappointing audiences is the final entry to Fox’s X-Men cycle before the characters get rebooted for the MCU. The film opened to terrible reviews and underwhelming box office.

This is obviously just a placeholder image. What the real SteelBook will look like is anyone’s guess at this point.

Joe Dante’s delightful dark comedy will make the move to 4k this fall. The infographic design on the SteelBook is mildly clever, but strikes me as a lazy art school student’s final project thrown together at the last minute before deadline.
