Another Criterion Sale? I’m Still Recovering from the Last One!

As if this time of year weren’t already enough of a drain on the wallet, Barnes & Noble is having another 50% sale on Criterion titles. Tell us what you’re buying this time.

The last time Barnes & Noble had a big Criterion sale was back in July. That was later followed by a similar 45% off sale at Deep Discount in August.

Assuming you managed to accumulate all of the titles you wanted at that time, here’s a look at what Criterion has released since the September 1st end of that Deep Discount sale:

The sale ends November 21st. That means you should also be able to get ‘Antichrist‘ (Nov. 9), ‘Modern Times‘ and ‘Night of the Hunter‘ (both Nov. 16) at sale prices.

And, of course, there are all those older releases that you may not have had a chance to pick up before now.

Here’s a link to the sale page. AAA members should be able to get an additional 10% discount (on top of the 50% off) by shopping through this link. (At least, that worked the last time. I haven’t tried it on this one yet.)

I already have a few of those titles listed above, but I’m definitely going to have to jump on ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ and ‘Seven Samurai’. What about you? Tell us what you’re buying in the comments.

I really need to stop buying blurays on their release date! I picked up Seven Samurai at my local B&N for $50 and I still haven’t watched it.

I grabbed Seven Samurai and Paths of Glory for myself and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button for my parents for X-mas.

I have already cancelled my Amazon 36-buck “Night of the Hunter” and headed to B&N and ordered the same title for $24.95!!!! Great savings on a title I’ve waited years for!

I’d be curious to know Josh’s entire Criterion Blu-Ray collection thus far as I was totally with him on ‘Seven Samurai’ and ‘The Darjeeling Limited.’ The only other one I added to that batch from the above list was ‘The Thin Red Line.’

During the last two sales, I succumbed to the temptation to buy Criterion titles just because they’re Criterion titles. I would say that I have the majority of the studio’s Blu-ray output on my shelf. Most of them haven’t been watched yet, of course.

There are a few titles that I just have no interest in at all, though. I’m not a music guy and can’t bring myself to care about the Monterey Pop collection, even though I’m sure it’s probably good. (I did pick up Gimme Shelter, however.) The Secret of the Grain just sounds so utterly uninteresting to me that I can’t justify spending money on it, even at 50% off.

And I will not be adding Antichrist to my collection. I’ve truly despised every other movie that Lars von Trier has ever made, and this one looks like the culmination of everything I hate about him.

From the above list, I already have Charade and Thin Red Line, so I don’t need to buy them now. I should probably add Breathless to my cart before I finalize any orders.

  5. Barnes and noble members can get an additional 10 percent off and also use the coupons for 5 dollars off or 15 percent off, for additional savings. Picked up Paths of Glory, Seven Samauri, House, Crumb, The Magician, Four by Brakhage, and Antichrist on blu, and Bergman Trilogy, Vampyr, A Nous Liberte, Beauty and the Beast, and Closely Watched Trains, in standard.

I’m going to try to limit myself to picking up three BDs this time. One of them is definitely going to be Modern Times, but I’m not decided on the other two. It’s between:

    -Seven Samurai
    -Hunger
    -Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
    -The Thin Red Line
    -The Magician
    -Paths of Glory
    -The Night of the Hunter
