Please Pardon This Service Interruption

Somehow or other, we’ve made it through another year. 2013 was a year of both big lows and big highs for me personally, and I’m sure for many of you as well. Here’s hoping that 2014 has more of the latter and less of the former. As we welcome the new year, please note that our posting schedule in the blog will be greatly reduced over the next few weeks. Bear with us, and we should bring things back up to steam in early 2014.

The Bonus View blog was created in April of 2010 with a mission statement of providing a catch-all outlet for our site’s writers to discuss movies, TV, video streaming, gaming, electronics and other topics related to the field of home theater that aren’t specifically Blu-ray news or reviews (which are covered on the site’s main page). After all, this site is not and has never been “Blu-ray Digest.” As great a product as Blu-ray may be, there’s a lot more to home theater and high definition than the shiny video discs.

Since its inception, the blog has maintained a steady schedule of at least three posts on every working business day – excluding holidays, of course – with as many as seven or eight on busy days. That’s a lot of writing for a small staff, most of whom have other responsibilities to juggle both here and at other jobs.

As I write this, we’ve just passed 3,800 published posts. As managing editor of the blog, I have personally written at least one post on each of those days on all but two occasions. I also edit every article in this section of the site (some of our writers might say too heavily), and frequently choose the images and write the headlines to go with them. The blog was a personal project that I spearheaded because I felt that the site really needed it, and I have worked hard to keep it running. This often meant bringing my laptop with me and continuing to work through vacations and travel.

Well, the time has come for me to take a break. As I’ve announced in other recent posts, my wife and I are expecting our first children (yes, plural). In fact, by the time you read this, the newest Zybers should already be here. I will need to take some paternity leave as we struggle to figure this parenthood thing out.

I’ll be honest that I’m not exactly sure what will happen to the blog while I’m away. Unfortunately, no one else on staff has availability to take over everything I do here. We’ll try to publish some content when people have time, but it may be sporadic. I may pop my head in every so often, but I doubt that I’ll be able to write every day.

At the very least, the blog will definitely be closed Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Much like last week, we’ll play Friday by ear. After that, it depends on whether our other staff members have time to write.

Give us a few weeks, and we’ll eventually get back up to speed again. I assure you that this is just a temporary slowdown.

None of this should impact any other areas of the site. The front page is managed separately by Mike Attebery. I only run the blog. The news and review sections, as well as the site forum, should all be unaffected.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and thank you for reading this blog. Happy New Year to one and all!

  1. Happy New Year and congratulations to you and Mrs. Z, Josh!

I’ll still look forward to the content here and fully understand the reason for the reduced workload. Parenthood is a huge undertaking and kids do not come with a user manual (I’ve looked).

I can’t believe I’ve been following this blog for 3.5 years. I can distinctly remember the day you guys started this. Based on the amount of time I personally spend checking and reading this site, I can’t imagine how much time and work it takes to write and edit for it. Josh, the contributions you and your staff have made to this blog have brought me plenty of enjoyment over the past three and a half years. You’ve earned a well deserved break, so enjoy it as best you can. Your loyal fan base will be waiting for you when you get back. Happy New year to you and your NEW family!

Yeah … seems strange that it’s been 3 1/2 years already. Love the blog (and the variety of posts in it). More importantly, best of luck to you and Mrs. Z, Josh! Hope everybody is healthy and happy!
