XBMC Eden Beta is Available Now
Thu Dec 29, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: XBMC, HTPCs, Boxee (all tags)
The worthy rival of Boxee has launched its latest software - not pulling out of the HTPC space.
With Boxee no longer officially supported, many HTPC users will be looking for a new media center alternative. The XBMC - originally created as the Xbox Media Center - just might be the way to go.
The newest version of XBMC has launched in beta form and there are a significant amount of changes. The default skin got a nice redesign, speeds have been improved and AirPlay support has been added. Version 11.0 is also the first stable Apple TV2 and iPad release.
You can download the media center directly from XBMC.

XBMC Now Works on Jailbroken iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs.
Mon Jan 24, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, XBMC (all tags)
No light versions here - this is the real thing.
The biggest problem with the Apple TV is that there's not actually that much you can do with it. You can buy movies from iTunes, watch movies from Netflix or... rent movies from iTunes. It's a pretty sad little device.
But if you jailbreak it, you can turn it into something much better. XBMC, once famous for turning your Xbox into an impressive media playing machine, is finally available for the new Apple TV. You'll have to do a little bit of hacking, but once you do, gone forever are the file type restrictions and limited playback capacity of Apple's box.
Owners of iPhones and iPads are in luck too, since the XBMC is now available for those devices as well. It's a big day for XBMC, and an even bigger day for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV owners.
