NAD Unveils T 557 Blu-ray Player
Wed Dec 02, 2009 at 11:00 AM ETTags: NAD, Product Announcement, Industry Trends (all tags)
The new quick loading and fully featured T 557 Blu-ray player from NAD launches this January.
It seems backwards, but the trend tends to be that higher end consumer electronics manufacturers are the last to integrate new features. The T 557 Blu-ray player from NAD, for example, is their first player to stream video and audio from a home network. It's something other players have been doing for a while, and something the PS3 has been doing for ages.
That's not to say that NAD is behind the times, their newest player includes an impressive feature set. The 557 is of course a BD Live capable player, and offers both Ethernet and WiFi connectivity. It outputs at a 1080p resolution at 24, 50, or 60 Hz. It's got 7.1 channel analog audio outputs as well as both coax and optical digital audio outs. The NAD T 557 also bitstreams all the latest in high definition audio formats including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Especially tantalizing though is the load time of the 557. NAD states that their new player “loads most Blu-ray discs in just a few seconds.” The NAD T 557 also has an instant open function which quickly ejects the disc.
Though a picture in picture feature isn't unique to the NAD T 557, the ability to play standard definition and high definition video simultaneously is intriguing.
NAD will be showing off their new player at CES next month, but it is available now from authorized dealers at a price of $599.

New FreeAgent Hits the Market
Wed Sep 16, 2009 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Seagate, Product Announcement (all tags)
Seagate has officially announced the release of its new FreeAgent Theater + HD media player. A followup to the unimpressive FreeAgent Theater, Seagate hopes to turn things around with their latest offering.
Shipping next month at $149, the FreeAgent Theater + features support for a variety of popular music and video formats including DivX, Xvid, FLAC and of course Mpeg -1 and 4 and MP3 formats. The player is also capable of streaming from home computers, though wireless connectivity isn't a built in option.
Much of the celebration regarding the FreeAgent is in its clean look and simple setup, both of which rely on the use of a FreeAgent Go hard drive. The FreeAgent Theater + still allows the hookup of standard external drives, but hooking through USB is a much less elegant solution.
The FreeAgent + is available for preorder now, sold alone at $149 or bundled with a 500GB FreeAgent Go drive for $289. The wireless adapter, available in November, will retail for $69.

Among the bevy of announcements coming from LG’s summer line show were the SL80 and LED backlit SL90 LCDs.
An ultra slim bezel and seamless edge to edge panel are the incredible aesthetic selling points of these new TVs. The appearance of the new line is pretty impressive, but of course, what the screen looks like when it’s on is the bigger concern for consumers.
Launching this holiday season, according to LG’s press release, the SL80 features 240Hz TruMotion technology as well as a contrast ratio of 150,000:1. The SL90 isn’t officially detailed, but LG did state that it would be just over an inch thick and feature LED backlighting.
Michael Ahn, president of LG North America, said of the new televisions “Our advanced new SL80/90 HDTVs demonstrate how together innovation and design produce exceptional performance”

According to Akihabara News, Panasonic is releasing a new line of DVRs this September.
The lineup is set to include six different units ranging from the very high end to the low. Consumers will have several size options, from 320 gigabytes all the way up to 2 terabytes.
The new DVR line will also feature units with built in VHS and Blu-ray recorders. While it is unclear which DVRs will have which features, it seems likely that the VHS player would be integrated into the lower end models, leaving the higher end to house the Blu-ray recorders. Sharp Unveils Aquos LED LCD TV Lineup
Wed Jul 08, 2009 at 03:00 PM ETTags: Sharp, Product Announcement, HD Gear, LED (all tags)
Sharp is aiming its newest LED-backlit LCD TVs at a more mainstream market.
The LE700 Aquos LED series includes 32-inch to 53-inch screen sizes with prices ranging from $1,100 to $2,800.
For the time being, this new line will replace the XS1 LED LCD TV line, and the new white LED technology in the LED700 will replace the RGB LED technology found in this more expensive line. These new TVs feature 1080p resolution, 120Hz framerate and 4ms response time. The addition of the LED backlight makes these new TVs more energy-efficient, produce more uniform lighting, and deeper black levels.
Along with these LED TVs, Sharp will soon be producing larger numbers of large-screen LCDs. The E77 Aquos LCD TV series will get a 60-inch and a 65-inch screen lineup, using CCFL technology to make the pricing more competitive.
