Roku Updates the LT, HD and Roku 2
Wed May 16, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Roku, Firmware Updates (all tags)
New partner channels are on the way – bugs and stability fixed for now.
Roku has just launched an update for its players that takes them up to version 4.7, and while it's not a fun update with additional content and such, it's definitely welcome.
If you're using the new Roku HD, you'll be happy to find out that stability of the device has been improved across the board. Every Roku player has had tweaks to improve device discovery when using iOS or Android apps.
Content updates to Roku's lineup include added support for sites that utilize Microsoft Smooth Streaming and "improvements to support several new partner channels to launch in 2012."
If you don't want to wait for your player to automatically update, you can go to Settings > Software Update > Check Now.

TiVo Premieres Get Multi-Room Streaming and More in New Update
Mon Jan 23, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: TiVo, TiVo Premiere, Firmware Updates, Multi-Room DVR (all tags)
You'll also find user interface tweaks and search improvements across the board.
Some lucky users have had the latest update to the TiVo Premiere for a while, but they can't lord it over you anymore - the update has gone live for all TiVo users.
Update 20.2 brings plenty to the table for Premiere, Premiere XL and Premiere Elite boxes, but first and foremost is a nice facelift. Both the Grid Guide and Live Guide are finally in HD. They now also feature a picture-in-picture view of the show you're watching in the upper right hand corner. Search has also been improved and now includes selections from Netflix, Amazon, Blockbuster and Hulu Plus.
The really big news though is the option of multi-room streaming, which TiVo doesn't really highlight as much as they should. If you have two Premiere boxes on the same network, you can stream a show directly from one to the other - no need to transfer.

PlayStation Issues Immediate Patch for Vita Bugs and Freezes
Tue Dec 20, 2011 at 10:30 AM ETTags: PlayStation Vita, Firmware Updates, Sony (all tags)
Sony has also written up an apology for the issues.
It's easy to get jealous of Japanese gamers. They tend to get the first shot at new games and new systems, leaving us to check out screenshots and preview videos while waiting. Of course, there are some times where it's kind of nice to be late to the party.
The Vita launch seems like it's going to be one of those times, as customers have been reporting some big problems with their new systems. There are bugs of course - that's not unusual. Vita owners are having bigger problems, including unresponsive touchscreens and completely frozen systems.
Sony issued an apology and put out a new firmware update to address the issues. It's a lucky thing for Vita owners and Sony both that we live at a time where firmware updates are simple to distribute online. As recently as ten years ago, this could have spelled doom for the system.

PS3 Software Version 4.0 Releases This Week
Wed Nov 30, 2011 at 09:30 AM ETTags: PlayStation 3, Firmware Updates, PlayStation Vita (all tags)
The system will be updated to play nice with the Vita, allowing you to use the system for content management and backup.
It's been a while since we've had an even numbered update to the PS3, which means that we're in for a big one. The primary features coming to the PS3 in the latest update are, as you might expect, related to the upcoming PlayStation Vita.
Patch 4.0 will let your PS3 act as a storage device of sorts for the Vita. You'll be able to transfer movies, games and even update software on the Vita using the PS3. You can back up saves too, which is essential, as anyone whose lost a memory card in the past will tell you.
The update also give PlayStation Plus members the ability to enable or disable automatic updates on games, system software, recommended titles and trophy information.
Of course, those are only the pre-patch notes. Once everything is up and running, Sony will release a full list of what's new and what was changed.

Xbox 360 Update December 6th Includes Cloud Save Storage
Wed Nov 23, 2011 at 10:30 AM ETTags: Xbox 360, Firmware Updates, Cloud Gaming (all tags)
You'll find a graphical overhaul, gesture support and plenty more as well.
The newest update to the Xbox 360 is hitting on December 6th and there's plenty to love about it. You'll find a brand new design for the dashboard that includes gesture support and voice control for Kinect users. We're hoping it stays nice and quick too, though there's no reason to expect that it won't.
The new update brings a few new features like Facebook sharing and enhanced family settings. There are a few new things in the works including new entertainment delivery options too, but the really big news is that of cloud based saves.
Have you ever gone to a friend's house and forgotten your memory card? Did you get a new Xbox after your old one red ringed only to find that the slim models don't work with the old hard drives? With cloud based saves it won't be an issue.

Nintendo is Updating the 3DS with Sleep Mode Downloads and More
Tue Nov 01, 2011 at 10:30 AM ETTags: Nintendo, 3DS, Firmware Updates (all tags)
The folks at Nintendo say that plenty of eShop improvements are headed our way, including demo capabilities.
Fans aren't exactly happy with the way the eShop works on the 3DS and Nintendo has definitely taken notice. They're going to be launching some big improvements to the eShop and the 3DS starting by enabling sleep mode downloads. Instead of having to leave your 3DS on the entire time it's downloading something, you can simply set it to sleep mode and pick it up later with your download completed.
Nintendo is introducing another feature too, which will make both fans and publishers happy. They're putting demo functionality into the 3DS. That means that players will be able to check out games before they buy them and game makers will be able to let people get a taste of what they've got to give.
Also down the line is the ability to purchase games for your 3DS through your smartphone or a traditional web interface.

Denon Upgrades High End Receivers - Adds Audyssey Features and More
Tue Feb 22, 2011 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Denon, Firmware Updates (all tags)
The upgrade is slated to hit in October, and will include 3D pass-through capabilities.
When you buy a cheap receiver, chances are there won't be any sympathy when it goes out of date. You'll just have to buy a new one. When you get high-end gear though, the companies tend to be a lot more interested in keeping you on as a customer.
Denon is no exception, and will be offering a hardware and firmware upgrade to owners of their high-end AVR-5308CI and AVP-A1HDCI receivers this October.
"Early adopters who purchased the flagship AVR-5308CI A/V receiver and AVP-A1HDCI Preamplifier nearly 4 years ago bought them with the confidence that they would experience the very best home entertainment for years to come," says Denon's Jeff Talmadge.
If you want to get more details on the upgrade, you can sign up to be alerted by email from Denon.
