Gaikai Bringing Cloud Gaming to Facebook - 'World of Warcraft' Demoed

This massive availability will lower the price of entry even further.

'World of Warcraft' is pretty danged big. It's the biggest MMO around in terms of a paid subscriber base and mainstream coverage and it doesn't look like anything can touch it. At least some of that popularity comes from the incredibly low cost of entry - you don't need a killer PC to handle the game.

Now, things are going to get even easier for players that want to jump into 'WoW' as cloud gaming company Gaikai is bringing the game to Facebook. The game will simply stream to your computer while you play on a gaming computer headquartered at Gaikai.

One of the nice things about 'World of Warcraft' as a streaming title is that it really doesn't require a lighting fast response time unless you're really serious about getting into PvP. It's also not graphically spectacular, so a drop in video quality while streaming might not be all that bad.

What this could mean to Blizzard is huge. The game is already free until level 20 and giving players the streaming option means that people without a decent PC can log onto the game and play without having to spend a dime on upgrades. It also makes the game a bit easier to play at work - not that we're suggesting anything.

Update: A Gaikai representative was quick to comment on the mistaken news. It turns out the company isn't actually bringing 'Warcraft' to Facebook at this point. It will be bringing cloud gaming to the social network in the future, but there are currently no plans to add 'WoW' into the mix. Based on the excitement this story has caused though, we're sure Gaikai is thinking it over long and hard.

Rumor: Sony May Be Done With Videogame Consoles

A cloud gaming provider says Microsoft or Sony will be skipping out on the console race, but since we already know Microsoft has something in the works that only leaves one company.

The rumor mill is abuzz with the possibilities of next generation consoles appearing at E3, TGS and even CES 2013. We know Microsoft has something in the works, but Sony has been straightfoward about the whole thing, stating that they have no plans to show or talk about the PS4 at E3 this year.

A cloud gaming provider known as Gaikai is stirring the rumor mill a bit, claiming that one of the three hardware providers will be quitting the console race. Nintendo has already announced a new console and they seem to be doing alright for themselves and we know that Microsoft has something in the works. That means - if the rumor is true anyway - Sony will be quitting consoles.

It's hard to tell just how legit this rumor is. The PlayStation 3 seems to have at least a few years of life left in it and Sony could be thinking of cloud based gaming as the way forward. That or they could just duck back and use their internal development studios to crank out hits that aren't exclusive to one platform.

It's been a while since we've had a console generation that didn't have Sony in it. Not only would this news be big news for Microsoft it could be big news for any other company that might want to create a game console - there just might be an open spot on the market.

We're treating this as nothing more than rumor and speculation for now, but you can bet this is a development we'll be following closely.

OnLive is Coming to Google TV

Tags: OnLive, Google TV, Cloud Gaming (all tags)

The game streaming service will now be a standard feature on all current and future Google TV devices.

For some, getting games from OnLive doesn't make a lot of sense. If you have a decent gaming PC you'll see better graphical quality by installing the game proper and console owners and PC folks alike will have less lag playing locally. If you don't own a system at all though, OnLive is a nice alternative.

OnLive has made a huge move towards wooing those that might not otherwise by buying games. The service will soon be available on all current Google TV devices as well as included in upcoming devices. If Google TV purchases pick up, OnLive could soon be reaching a significant audience that doesn't have to pay a dime to check it out.

What OnLive has not yet revealed is just how users will be controlling these games. For now, you can check out the OnLive Viewer, which gives you access to OnLive social features. It's currently on Google TV and is, of course, free.

Xbox 360 Update December 6th Includes Cloud Save Storage

You'll find a graphical overhaul, gesture support and plenty more as well.

The newest update to the Xbox 360 is hitting on December 6th and there's plenty to love about it. You'll find a brand new design for the dashboard that includes gesture support and voice control for Kinect users. We're hoping it stays nice and quick too, though there's no reason to expect that it won't.

The new update brings a few new features like Facebook sharing and enhanced family settings. There are a few new things in the works including new entertainment delivery options too, but the really big news is that of cloud based saves.

Have you ever gone to a friend's house and forgotten your memory card? Did you get a new Xbox after your old one red ringed only to find that the slim models don't work with the old hard drives? With cloud based saves it won't be an issue.

OnLive Offers a Free Console with an 'Assassin's Creed Revelations' Pre-order

Wed Nov 16, 2011 at 11:30 AM ET
Tags: OnLive, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Assassin's Creed, Cloud Gaming (all tags)

That's a $99 console free with a $49 game. No matter what you think of OnLive, that's a hell of a deal.

OnLive made a huge impression on the game industry when it was first announced and shown off at trade shows. OnLive turned out not to be the game-changer that many thought it would be, but the cloud based gaming service is still something to be admired in principle if not in practice.

Though you can play OnLive on your PC, the company also offers a small console that lets you stream directly to your TV. Normally it runs $99, but right now it's absolutely free to those who order 'Assassin's Creed Revelations.'

That's a $49 game with a free $99 console, which has to be one of the better deals we've seen recently. If you want to give it a go, you'll need to order to pre-order by November 19th directly from OnLive.
