LG Intros Home Theater Systems and a Blu-ray Sound Bar

There's a huge range, from the standard to the dazzling.
LG's got plenty to talk about these days, including three new home theater and speaker systems. There's a pretty big range in the products, starting at the low end with a 3D Blu-ray sound bar.
The LG HLX55W is an interesting case. It's a fairly traditional sound bar, with the exception of the built-in Blu-ray player. The player is mounted in the direct center of the bar and discs are inserted vertically. It's an interesting concept, but it just seems like trouble, especially once those speakers get turned up to 10.
LG's HX995TZ is about as traditional as it gets. It's a home theater system that includes four floorstanding speakers, a Blu-ray player and a wireless subwoofer. Strangely, the Blu-ray player is designed to sit or mount vertically, an idea that LG seems to be really into.
It doesn't come with a vertically mounted Blu-ray player, but the HX900 is the most interesting new system from LG, at least in terms of design. The package consists of four floorstanding speakers and one center channel , all designed to create a 3D soundstage. The vertical element is created by sending sound out through the tops of the slick looking floorstanding speakers – certainly one of the more interesting speaker sets we've seen recently.

Sony Announces the BDP-S1700ES Blu-ray Player
Wed Jul 07, 2010 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Sony, Blu-ray Player (all tags)
Adds that the ES line will be available from specialty AV retailers only. No online sales.
The BDP-S1700ES player from Sony is a slick looking player, and there's no doubt that the build quality is on par with that typically found in the Elevated Standard product line. On paper though, at least with what we know right now, it's a bit underwhelming.
Sony boasts iPod and iPhone control options, with Android based phones getting the app soon. You'll be able to use your phone as a controller, but also as a device to view details about the movie or music that you're playing.
There's also built-in WiFi capability, which lets you get on to the BRAVIA Internet Video service and to Sony's new premium service – the unfortunately named Qriocity.
The new player is 3D capable, DLNA compliant and it does all the upscaling and HD audio decoding you'd expect. It's also got an IR jack on the back so you can integrate it into your system.
It seems like a nice enough player, but it doesn't seem to do anything that makes it go above and beyond. Still, you can pick it up for $400 when it launches this August.
You won't be finding this one on Amazon though, it will be available through specialty retailers and custom installers only, with no online sales allowed by Sony.

LG's BX580 3D Blu-ray Player is Available Now
Tue Jun 22, 2010 at 12:00 PM ETTags: LG, Blu-ray Player (all tags)
It comes in at just under $300 at Amazon.
The latest in 3D Blu-ray players is the LG BX580. It does HDMI 1.4 and it can handle 3D content right out of the box, unlike a lot of other players.
Aside from the 3D capabilities, the BX580 doesn't do anything too far out of the ordinary. It upscales DVDs to 1080p, and plays back a variety of video and audio formats including DivX, MKV, AVI and XviD. It can access internet based content from providers like CinemaNow, Netflix, Vudu, and Pandora.
The BX580 also sports built-in WiFi that works on the 2.4Ghz band, a USB port for watching movies and listening to music and, of course, the ability to play back Blu-ray movies in 1080p/24.
The MSRP on the LG BX580 is $399, but it's currently selling on Amazon for $299.86.
