AUO Waiting Until 2014 For OLED to be Feasible

Specifically, they're estimating that commercial use won't hit until 2014.

It seems like OLED television has been "right around the corner" for years now. Pretty much every TV maker with an interest in the technology says that we'll be seeing OLED sets on store shelves soon. AUO is at least a tad bit more realistic.

The company is expecting that OLED televisions will finally be feasible for commercial use in 2014. Keep in mind of course, that saying something is ready for commercial use is a far cry from saying that it's ready for the general public.

It's the usual line of reasoning for the OLED issues - high prices, low production and limited interest in the tech. Of course, get those prices down and that interest will start to rise astronomically.

AUO Shows Off a 71 Inch 21:9 3D LCD

It's the largest soon to be commercially available 21:9 display around.

When high definition sets came out, a lot of things changed. It wasn't just the resolution, though that's the most talked about change - the 16:9 aspect ratio was adopted as well, and it changed the way we watch television, but when it comes to movies we're forced to make a choice between black bars and a stretched or incomplete picture.

Philips introduced a 21:9 television for those dedicated to movies exclusively and Vizio soon followed suit with a few prototypes of its own. AUO's new set outdoes them both - at least in terms of size.

It's a 71 inch LCD panel that handles 3D with the use of active shutter glasses. Richard Lai of Engadget got to go eyes-on with the new display and says that he "found the experience to be surprisingly comfortable and effective."

AUO to Debut a 71 Inch CinemaScope TV

Also on the way from the company, a 65 inch glasses-free 3D set

The folks over at AUO have two new sets to show off at the FPD International conference that's being held in Japan this weekend. Both are impressive, and both are huge.

The first is a CinemaScope TV, meaning it's got an aspect ratio of 21:9, instead of the 16:9 of traditional widescreen sets. It may not be the best when it comes to watching standard definition television, but if you're a movie buff you'll find plenty to love from this massive set.

AUO's second big debut will be a 65 inch 3D set that uses lenticular lens technology to allow for what the company calls "naked eye" viewing. If that's not enough for you, the set also boasts a 4K2K resolution.

There's no word, of course, on when we'll be seeing sets like these make their way into the marketplace, but if that naked eye 3D set works out, you can bet other manufacturers will be jumping on that bandwagon as soon as possible.
