Patrick Stewart Set to Star as Jean-Luc Picard in New Star Trek Streaming Series[teaser]The legendary starfleet captain is setting a course for CBS All Access.[/teaser] According to a report by Deadline, Patrick Stewart will star in a new Star Trek series for the CBS All Access streaming service. The actor will be reprising his iconic role of Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The news comes from the 2018 Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas, where Stewart made a surprise appearance to make the announcement himself. The currently untitled Star Trek series is being developed for CBS All Access by Alex Kurtzman, the co-creator and executive producer of Star Trek: Discovery. Though full plot details have not been revealed yet, the new show won't be a reboot of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Instead, the series will explore the next stage in Picard's life. Check out the announcement video with Patrick Stewart below! "With overwhelming joy, it's a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the Star Trek fold," said Alex Kurtzman. "For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can't wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old." Other members of the show's creative team will include James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, and Kirsten Beyer. In addition, Stewart, Chabon, Goldsman, Duff, and Kurtzman will executive produce, along with Heather Kadin of Secret Hideout, Roddenberry Entertainment President Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, and Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth. "I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course," said Stewart. "It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over. During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I'm ready to return to him for the same reason -- to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more." Patrick Stewart originally played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran from 1987 to 1994. In addition, the actor previously reprised the role in four theatrical films: Star Trek: Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). An exact release date for the new Star Trek show has not been announced yet. Beyond the upcoming series, CBS All Access is also home to Star Trek: Discovery which is set to return for a second season in early 2019. A current CBS All Access subscription costs $5.99 per month with reduced commercials or $9.99 per month for a commercial-free plan. Annie’s disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment—a sequence of pills its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux), claims can repair anything about the mind, be it mental illness or heartbreak—draws them and ten other strangers to the facilities of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech for a three-day drug trial that will, they’re assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned. Maniac is created by Patrick Somerville, and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. The Good Cop (Netflix, September 21) - Tony Danza plays Tony Sr., a disgraced, former NYPD officer who never followed the rules. Nappily Ever After (Netflix, September 21) - Violet Jones has a seemingly flawless life – a great job, a handsome doctor boyfriend, and a meticulously maintained perfect coiffure. But after an accident at the hair-dresser, each of these things start to unravel, and Violet begins to realize that she was living the life she thought she was supposed to live, not the one that she really wanted. New YouTube 8K HDR Video Offers Breathtaking Views of Morocco[teaser]The stunning clip offers a taste of 8K video potential.[/teaser] While consumer 8K displays are still forthcoming here in the US, YouTube has actually been offering 8K streaming support on its platform since 2015. And a new video uploaded to the Jacob + Katie Schwarz channel just might be one of the most impressive demos for the format so far. The short film focuses on several breathtaking locations in Morocco and has been uploaded as an 8K FUHD HDR 60fps video using Google's VP9 codec. With that said, the only way to currently watch the clip in full 8K glory is via a computer web browser. But since the content was captured using a Red Monstro Vista Vision 8K Sensor and mastered in 8K, even YouTube's down-rezed 4K feed should still offer a tantalizing taste of 8K video production's potential benefits. With that in mind, despite not having a true 8K display handy, we decided to check the clip out on one of the next best things -- Samsung's 2018 flagship 65-inch Q9 QLED 4K HDR TV. You can also watch the video for yourself below (or through the YouTube app on your smart TV). The short film features smooth 60fps gliding camera shots that slowly move through various Moroccan locals, including the streets and markets of Marrakech, the blue city of Chefchaouen, the Arfoud desert, and the ancient city of Ouarzazate. When streaming in 4K HDR on the Q9, the down-rezed 8K footage renders breathtaking detail, offering stunning views of wildlife, rocky shores, impressive architecture, and sand dunes. Textures on walls and objects, and patterns on structures and fabric, are especially striking, allowing one to make out every brick or slab of stone in buildings, and every individual leaf on trees or strand of grass on the ground. Fine detail is especially notable in one sequence shot inside a room full of golden lanterns, highlighting every intricate nook and cranny creating a spacious sense of dimension and separation between each object. The HDR grading also results in sumptuous primaries and impressive specular highlights on the Q9. Shots of the sun resting just over the horizon in the desert carry concentrated intensity while maintaining detail. Likewise, drifting shots that move through shadowy rooms toward light creeping in from the outside world feature strong contrast and a smooth transition between deep blacks and bright light. Warm tones are rich and realistic, and the pastel blue walls of Chefchaouen are gorgeously realized. Of course, being a YouTube stream, the clip is still subject to some occasional signs of compression, including some fleeting noise and banding here and there. Likewise, the video actually had to pause once on my setup in order to buffer. But even with these limitations, the clip serves as perfect demo material for current-gen 4K HDR TVs. With that said, as jaw-dropping as the footage is, I'm not sure the down-rezed 4K stream really offers that much of an edge over similar clips shot and mastered in 4K on YouTube or other streaming services. Don't get me wrong, it's among the more impressive streaming videos I've seen when it comes to overall detail, but I'm not totally sold on the benefits of 8K just yet. The higher-res video capture definitely offers a lot of added freedom for filmmakers to play around with footage during editing and grading on the post-production side, but it remains to be seen if the end product actually offers an appreciable increase in observable detail over a 4K master. And to determine that, we'll really have to wait for higher bitrate 8K content and true 8K TVs. For now, however, watching the material on a flagship 4K TV offers a promising (albeit far from revelatory) look at what 8K video capture has to offer. And beyond this beautiful trip to Morocco, the Jacob + Katie Schwarz channel also offers a growing collection of additional 8K HDR, 4K HDR, and slow-motion clips that are well worth a look for users who want some impressive demo material to help show off their new Ultra HD TVs. Director Christopher McQuarrie Reveals the Truth Behind Justice League's Mustache-Gate[teaser]The full story behind one of Hollywood's most expensive mustaches has been revealed.[/teaser] When actor Henry Cavill decided to grow a mustache for his character in Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout, few could have predicted the wide ranging ramifications. But when the facial hair conflicted with reshoots for Warner Brothers' Justice League, the infamous "Mustache-Gate" scandal was born. Essentially, production would not allow Cavill to shave his impressive stache while shooting remained active for Mission: Impossible. And since he had to reshoot several scenes as Superman for Justice League at the same time, Warner Bros. was put in a tricky situation -- one that resulted in some hilariously bad and quite costly CGI in order to digitally erase the actor's mustache. But now that Mission: Impossible - Fallout has hit theaters, director Christopher McQuarrie is clarifying his part in the Mustache-Gate fiasco. As reported by The Playlist and CBM, McQuarrie recently sat down for an episode of The Empire Film Podcast where he elaborated on the details surrounding the conflict. According to the director, when Justice League producer Charles Roven approached him about the mustache dilemma, McQuarrie tried to help Warner Bros. out the best he could without putting his own movie in jeopardy. He spoke to Mission: Impossible - Fallout producer Jake Myers about the issue and the team calculated that if Cavill were to shave his mustache to play Superman, it would cost their production about $3 million to digitally fill-in the actor's missing facial hair in order to match the rest of the footage already shot. With that in mind, McQuarrie proposed that Warner Bros. simply pay them the $3 million, and in turn they would allow Cavill to shave his mustache for the Justice League reshoots and then actually shut down production for Mission: Impossible until he grew it back. But while that seemed like a pretty solid compromise to avoid any laughable CGI in either film, when Paramount heard about the idea they quickly shot it down, forcing Warner Bros. to deal with Cavill's facial hair through some utterly ridiculous effects work -- proving that while Kryptonite might be deadly, Superman's greatest weakness is really just an unruly mustache. Here is the full quote: "When the question came – the reshoots for Justice League came out – [Charles] Roven called me, and he said, ‘We need your help and we need to shave Henry [Cavill]’s mustache. We need him to come back and we need to do these reshoots.’ And I said, ‘Look, Chuck, naturally I want to do everything I can to help you, but I also have to think about our production. Let me talk to everybody and figure out what the scheduling would be.’ And I went and spoke to Jake Myers, and the suggestion was made through channels that we shave the mustache and Henry could begin to grow the mustache back and that then there would be – they would give us the resources to digitally fill in Henry’s mustache. Because like it or not, a fake mustache in close-up on a 75mm lens is never going to look like anything but a fake mustache. So, we offered the following compromise: Jake Myers calculated the amount of money that it would take to replace the number of shots, and essentially what Jake was able to project was about a $3 million visual effects budget. So, I don’t know how much Henry was in Justice League, I’ve never seen the movie, but I can tell you how much it would’ve cost for Mission: Impossible to digitally add Henry Cavill’s mustache, and we said yes. We said, here’s what we’ll do: give us the $3 million and we’ll shut down, and that will give Henry Cavill the time to grow his mustache back, and we’ll just shut our movie down. …We said we’ll do this, at which point, somebody from Paramount Pictures said, ‘What is going on? What are you people even talking about?’ They’re like, ‘There’s no way we’re going to do that.’ We were just like, ‘Okay.’ That was the best plan that we could come up with."
