SteelBook Alert: One Jump Ahead

To the delight of collectors (if not their wallets), Best Buy has kept busy cranking out SteelBooks for Disney remakes, superhero blockbusters, and even the occasional other type of movie that might still get made these days.

Defying my immense skepticism borne from its really awful trailers, Disney’s Aladdin remake looks like it’s going to be a pretty big hit.

Assuming that this is the final art and not a temp design, the SteelBook is attractive, if not particularly adventurous. I’d certainly rather have this than a big headshot of Will Smith in blue facepaint.

Dumbo (2019)

Release date: TBD

The House of Mouse didn’t have quite as much luck with Tim Burton’s reimagining of Dumbo. Although not a flop, the film received tepid reviews and has underperformed at the box office.

I’ll give the SteelBook credit for trying to be creative with the “billboard painted onto the side of a train car” design, but it looks a little cluttered to me with all those diagonal lines.

Avengers: Endgame

Release date: TBD

It should come as no surprise that the biggest Marvel blockbuster yet would get a SteelBook just like every other film in the series. It should also come as no surprise that it would have boring artwork with a big “A” logo, which seems to be all that the SteelBook artists can think of when it comes to the Avengers crossovers.

Zavvi briefly offered a 3D edition, but that one has already sold out.

Shazam!

Release date: July 16, 2019
Price: $34.99

With Shazam!, DC made a conscious effort to break from the brooding and dour tone of its earlier superhero flicks in favor of something much lighter and goofier. The ploy worked. The movie got great reviews and did well at the box office.

Using a close-up of the hero’s logo on the front cover has become something of a cliché in SteelBook art, but this looks fine.

Alita: Battle Angel

Video Formats: Blu-ray/3D/Ultra HD
Available at: Best Buy (ORDER HERE)
Release date: July 23, 2019
Price: $34.99

The trailers for James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s anime adaptation were frighteningly bad. That the movie didn’t turn out to be the biggest box office bomb of all time is astounding to me. Against all odds, it will just barely break even at the end of the day. That’s quite an achievement.

I’m not sure what the point is of focusing on the character’s hand for the cover art, but better that than her creepy-as-hell eyes.

Release date: October 1, 2019
Price: $29.99

As Jason reported from Cannes, Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic has gotten an impressive new 4k restoration.

I get what the artist was going for with the maze design on the SteelBook, and the yellow is meant to homage the original Saul Bass poster, but whoever did this is no Saul Bass and the combination doesn’t work very well at all, in my opinion.

Unfortunately I’ve not seen any UK Alita Steelbook advertised yet. Already got the 4k/3D/2D combo on order, but a nice steelbook would be welcome.

‘The Shining’ isn’t half-bad, but I read the title as ‘The Stanley Kubrick’s Shining’, and that bothers me.

Alita is a masterpiece, and so is that hand design. “I’m not sure what the point is of focusing on the character’s hand for the cover art, but better that than her creepy-as-hell eyes.” Get outta here with this ignorant rubbish.

Alita BA was an amazing movie, and probably will be the first Blu-ray i go out and buy in like nearly 5 years. You clearly didn’t see the movie Josh, so maybe tone down the criticism of it just a tad.

    FYI…just pre-ordered Avengers Endgame in 3D from Amazon.uk website…while it isn’t steelbook, it is 3D.

  6. I might get all of these SteelBooks except Shazam. Also should add the Cinderella live-action movie coming to 4K to the mix as well, and just for good measure add the original Cinderella, getting a Signature Collection Steel as well.
