Let’s start this blog off on the right foot, shall we? Who wants a free Blu-ray player?
Oh, did I get your attention with that? Good. I have a spare Panasonic DMP-BD50 Blu-ray player with original manual and remote. This is a fully-featured Profile 2.0 model with all Bonus View and BD-Live capabilities. It used to be my reference player for reviews for this site. I just don’t need and have no room for an extra player at this time. So I figured, why not give it away to one lucky reader?
If you’d like a chance at winning this player, either for yourself or to give away as a gift for a loved one who hasn’t yet joined the Blu-ray revolution, you must post in the Comments section below the name of the guilty pleasure movie not yet available on Blu-ray that you’re hoping will be released in the future, why you like it, and what about it you can’t wait to see in high definition. That “why” portion is critical. I want some good answers here. Entries with ‘Citizen Kane’, ‘Schindler’s List’, or other widely-praised and beloved movies will be disqualified. This is a contest for guilty pleasures only. These are movies that you may like even though the majority of other viewers dislike them, or look down upon them.
The winner will be chosen entirely at my own discretion based on how passionate or well-argued I feel that your defense of the movie is. I will try not to judge anyone’s taste in movies, so long as it’s sincere. If ‘Gigli’ or ‘Battlefield Earth’ is honestly your favorite movie, make a good case for it. Attempts at sarcasm will be dismissed.
The original MSRP for this unit was $699. This one is used, but is in perfectly good working and cosmetic condition. I’ll be honest, I have no idea what the current garage-sale value is. In addition to the Blu-ray player, the winner will receive a starter pack of five guilty pleasure movies on Blu-ray. The titles are: ‘Ninja Assassin‘, ‘Last Action Hero‘, ‘The Waterboy‘, ‘Black Dynamite‘, and ‘The Proposal‘. That’s a $170.87 value at MSRP. (Sorry, the titles are not negotiable.)
Runners-up will not get a Blu-ray player, but may receive separate prize packs of Blu-ray discs (titles TBD).
This contest is only open to entrants from the domestic United States. We will not ship internationally (whether you’re a U.S. citizen or not), so don’t even ask. Employees of High-Def Digest or Internet Brands and their families are not eligible. Standard contest rules and conditions apply. We’re trying to keep this on the up-and-up here.
The deadline for entry is Friday, April 30th. Good luck to everyone who enters.

My guilty pleasure has to be a film that I think nobody remembers, Extreme Prejudice from 1987: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092997/
It starred Nick Nolte and directed by Walter Hill. The reason I love this film so much was because it reminds me of a great western film The Wild Bunch. The movie has that low budget quality feel to it and it might not look great in 1080p but I think the sound quality in either TrueHD or DTS-MA track will sound pretty cool. There’s a big shootout scene at the end that’s similar to a shootout scene in The Wild Bunch.
I own the dvd version and it looks and sounds like shit so I would love to have this on Blu-ray someday.
Here’s the shootout scene I mentioned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thyp4Yh4EmM
Pretty cool huh?

My guilty pleasure movie not yet available in Blu-Ray is Seven with Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey and directory David Fincher.
For me is a classic of Modern Days, a disturbing ,tense, a masterpiece film.
The twist in the end still make this one the best thrillers available. The kind of movies I can watch over and over.
Would be fantastic to have it in Blu-Ray!!
Martin Albert
Ladyhawke from Richard Donner with Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick!
First thing, the DVD was barely watchable, almost a VHS copy, no special features. I would love to hear Andrew Powell’s orchestra-rock score in DTS-HD and see the great scenery of the film (castles, mountains, lake, Pfeiffer) with better resolution. I really love this cheesy love story, the humour and the fantastic finale. And again Andrew Powell… which I have also bought on CD!

I’m blushing as I write this but my guilty favorite has got to be “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark”.
Not only does it bring waves of nostalgia back to staying up late as a teenager watching schlocky horror movies, but it is really damned funny. Elvira was always racy without being vulgar when it came to her *ahem* assets. There is so much camp and homage to other films (leg warmers and Flashdance, Arnold with a Bazooka) that it is just a riot to watch.
To see this movie on Blu-Ray high definition would be, pardon the pun, a scream since the Production values would likely make themselves even more apparent. Rather than diminish the film, I think it would only enhance the campiness of the movie.

The guilty pleasure movie not yet available on Blu-ray, I think is back to the future trilogy which I have been waited for ages…

The reason, simple, it is the first sci-fiction movie the I like a lot when I start to watching movies…

Wow guilty pleasure movie. I definitely need Half Baked on BD! Dave Chappelle is probably at his funniest in this movie. Plus who’s better than Mr. Nice Guy and where else do you get Jerry Garcia forming from powder lol? The colors are off the chart and just pop in this movie and only blu-ray can properly bring this to life. Plus I want to see Dave Chapelle stoned and floating in high definition.

MY guilty pleasure film that is not on Blu-ray is the one and only “Corvette Summer”. I have had to wait for what seemed like FOREVER for just the regular DVD and who knows if we will ever see it in glorious Blu?!
Mark Hamill was great back then and Annie Potts….HUBBA HUBBA……
The really great thing about movies in the late 70’s early 80’s was that good guys were really GOOD and bad guys were just that.. BAD. I remember watching the villian in this film (the pale kid from Laserblast) and just saying to myself what a “slimy punk” over and over and loving every minute of it.
The Corvette in the film was awesome as well. I wanted one just like it (it was modified of course)!
I think if this film actually was to be put to Blu, the Corvette chase on the freeway overpasses in Vegas would be AWESOME if they put in the attention to detail that is true HD 1080p. Can you imagine how cherry the sun shining off the Red plate body of the Corvette would look during the final chase scene? I also would be euphoric to finally see the detail of Annie Potts love van in Vegas and being able to really see the interior plushiness. Another great sequence that would be highlighted by high definition would be the scene where Mark sees the Corvette on the street and follows it to the chop shop. I love that scene! There really are too many to speak of in this film, but I would really like to see the fine detail of the Corvette when it is shining on the Vegas hotel showroom floor. Can you imagine it? I can’t wait………

I’d ike to see the original “Lord of the Flies” on Blu-ray. Since the lead charactor actor (Ralph) passed last week, I’ve thought of how many times I taught that book and ran the 16mm version of the film. Ah, nostalgia! Now watch out for that falling rock…damn it!

My guilty pleasure which i believe to be a good movie in it’s own right… is the 2002 version of the count of Monte Cristo. i would like to see the interior of the chateau d’lf and all of its misery. i also find that the final fight seen with the grass level view is somewhat unique. in addition to these there are plenty of extravagant period pieces that i would like to see in high def as well.
Dave Stenton
Can’t wait for the goonies. Between HEY YOU GUYS, the truffel shuffel, and all the goofball antics just a fun movie. The part I can’t wait to see is black barts boat and the pirate scene at the end see if it will translate well in high def.

I’ve been enjoying the UK version for a few months. You can get it fairly cheap from Amazon.uk. The transfer is pretty good. I recommend picking it up if you cannot wait until later this year.

Hello all!
I haven’t had a chance to read through all the comments, so I apologize if this has already been picked, but my vote for guilty pleasure on Blu would have to Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure!
I’m now in my mid-20’s, so I grew up watching and loving this movie, and it’s still one of my favorites. Other than Big Fish (already on Blu), this is my favorite Tim Burton movie. It is completely off-the-wall, totally hilarious, and is holding up very well to the harsh test of time.
I would love to see Pee-Wee’s crazy, colorful house in HD, and who could forget that trippy, vibrant clown/bike-doctor scene?! That scene scared me enough in standard definition when I was little, I could only imagine what young kids would say now after seeing it in glorious 1080p!
Some people might say I’m crazy for thinking Pee-Wee would be great in HD, and to those people I say – “I know you are, but what am I?!”

My guilty pleasure movie, that I would like to see on Blu-Ray, is the 2006, teen comedy, “She’s the Man,” starring Amanda Bynes.
I would like to preface my support for this entry by first stating that I really do LIKE THIS MOVIE, and this is NOT an attempt at sarcasm in any way. I really like this movie because I’m a sucker for below average teen comedies. I grew up in the 80s with all the John Hughes’ classics: everything from “Ferris Buellers Day Off”, to “Sixteen Candles”, to “Pretty in Pink”, all the way to “Dutch.” All of these, were movies that I thought were sincerely funny and heart warming at the same time. Most importantly, they were movies that anybody could relate to.
Therefore, after growing up with all of these movies, I find it kind of odd that so many writers/directors have such a difficult time of striking a chord with today’s teen audiences. I mean, how hard can it really be to make a movie that is both sincerely great, AND is something that teenagers can relate to (without feeling like they are being talked down to, or looked down upon for being awkward at that stage in their lives)?
“She’s The Man” obviously comes nowhere close to matching the greatness of John Hughe’s best teen comedies. However, I do enjoy the movie, because I know of people who were able to relate to the movie. In particular, my teenage niece (who I was practically raising, like my own daughter, at the time), found this movie to be very appealing. She typically, does not like very many movies, but she found the human relationships in “She’s the Man” to be something that she could connect with; particularly the feelings of wanting to go the extra mile to reach a goal/dream that seems so out of reach.
SO, basically, I like this film because after seeing/hearing my nieces’ response to this movie, I was reminded of the movies that I enjoyed when I was a kid…and that is what movies are really about…sharing memories/experiences/ that we get from watching particular films.
I know many people scorn these films that are “loosely based” on Shakespeare’s plays, such as “O”, “10 Things I Hate About You”, and “She’s The Man.” However, I feel that these movies were able to speak to a new generation of teenagers…Due to the fact that there were not many writers talented enough to tap into the teenage psyche in a sincere manner, Hollywood had to look all the way back to Shakespeare to find stories that were timeless enough to actually trigger any sort of emotional response or lasting impact on the younger generation of movie goers. At the very least, these types of films were able to resonate with members of my family.
Therefore, I would like to see this movie on Blu-Ray so I can see it with the best picture quality possible. It would be great to see it in a quality that is as close to the movie going experience as possible. I’m also fairly sure that the scenes of the soccer fields would look great in Blu-Ray, because I enjoy any type of outdoor scenery in high definition.
After all of the above praises have been noted, even though I like “She’s The Man”, it is still important to note that this movie is definitely a guilty pleasure. It is clearly NOT a great film by any stretch of the imagination. Moreover, this post is SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT WHY THIS IS A GUILTY PLEASURE, AND WHY I LIKE IT, DESPITE ALL THE FLAWS THAT IT HAS. So, I’ll go ahead and list all the reasons why I should REALLY NOT like “She’s the Man:”
1) It has Channing Tatum. You know, the dude who “starred” in that new “G.I. Joe” movie, and then went on to severely burn his penis while filming his next movie (could this have been karma at work?)
2) Its probably the one gazillionth movie and/or T.V. show to showcase the pop song “Move Along” by “The All American Rejects.” Seriously, I already drew the line when I heard this song in opening credits to “The Hitcher” remake (mmhmm…Sophia Bush).
3) It takes an admittedly cute girl, in Amanda Bynes, and has her dressing up as a dude for a good portion of the movie’s run time. I know a lot of people say her cheeks make her look like a chipmunk, but I totally wouldn’t kick her out of bed. Which means, I seriously don’t want to see her dressing like a guy all the time either.
4) If you thought Channing Tatum had a lot of chemistry with the ladies in “G.I. Joe”, then its obviously a lot worse to watch him try to work his way through a “romantic scene” in which his love interest is trying to pull off being a guy. Talk about awkward. Oh, and did I forget to mention that Channing Tatum’s character is named “Duke” in “She’s the Man” as well? Is this a coincidence? I think not!
5) David Cross, in a post Arrested Development role, is really slumming it in this one. When do you think David Cross needed the paycheck more, when he signed up for “Alvin and the Chipmunks”, or when he signed up for “She’s the Man?”
6) This movie is wholly unoriginal. We all know that it trashes the concept of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” However, its also a complete rip-off/mash up of “Just One of the Guys” (1985) and the Rodney Dangerfield/Jonathan Brandis classic “Lady Bugs.” Without the star power of Rodney Dangerfield, the charisma of Jonathan Brandis, or the 80s cheese of “Just One of the Guys” there really isn’t any reason for “She’s The Man” to even exist!
7) I think the target audience for this movie might be 11-17 year old girls. There is no reason why a 25 year old male should have enjoyed this movie that much. Unless of course, this same 25 year old male was also a fan of “One Tree Hill”, “Dawson’s Creek”, and “90210.”
When you add all of this up, its obvious that the odds are severely stacked against me liking this movie. However, the fates would win over when it came to this film, and there were many factors that actually contributed to me liking this movie.
As with all “guilty pleasures”, I’m saddened to say that most of the reasons why I LIKED this movie are very much the SAME reasons that I thought I would DISLIKE the movie. However, here are a couple reasons why I like it anyways:
1) Channing Tatum is a hilarious actor. His range is unbelievable. I truly think that he will one day, grow up to be, the next Hayden Christensen.
2) Who doesn’t want to see David Cross playing a principal, or Vinnie Jones playing a Coach? The only better guest starring appearance I could think of is Bruce Campbell as the P.E. coach in Sky High.
3) That All-American Rejects song? Guilty as charged, its a fun guilty pleasure single. It might not provide the perfect soundtrack for a movie about Sean Bean Hitchhiking his way across the desert, and tying up college kids in between semi-trucks, in order to kill them Mortal Kombat style. However, it is the perfect pop tune to open up a coming-of-age, teen-sports comedy.
4) There might just be enough room in my heart for both “Lady Bugs” AND “She’s the Man.” If Rodney Dangerfield were still with us, I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel in which Amanda Bynes decides to disguise herself as an African-American student, in order to earn a scholarship to college (ah, they really don’t make movies like THAT anymore, do they?) Rodney Dangerfield could co-star as an aging gentleman who is going “Back to School.”
5) This movie gets points for not trying to gain the teenage audience’s favor, by using incorrect spelling/grammar. In an age of text messaging and tweeting, this movie could have easily been titled “She’s Da Man”, and it would have made much more money; just like “Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood.” Instead, it actually went the classy route by using an apostrophe in “She’s” and spelling out the word “the.” It is truly amazing stuff right there 🙂
6) Amanda Bynes, dressing up as a man, is pure comedic gold. At no point in the movie does she actually LOOK like a man. At worst she just looks like Amanda Bynes with a 90s, Josie Bissett from “Melrose Place”, bob-cut. However, isn’t that what inspires all the laughter? Basically, its about Channing Tatum not being able to tell the difference between a girl and a dude, because he burned his penis off…
7) This is a refreshing teen comedy, because it doesn’t star Hillary Duff or Miley Cyrus. The only thing that would make this movie better, is if it starred a “Mean Girls era” Lindsay Lohan or Mandy Moore. Speaking of Mandy Moore, “A Walk to Remember” really needs to be released as a two pack with “She’s the Man.”
8) It still manages to adhere to all the sports movie clichés. Do sports movie clichés ever get old?
This is pretty much all I have to say about this film. It’s really a guilty pleasure, so I really shouldn’t have wasted this much space talking about it. That is all.

Guilty Pleasure: The Replacements
This is the dirtiest guilty pleasure. Think about it… a movie where Keanu Reeves plays a washed up quarterback who gets his second chance during a player’s strike. It’s a terrible premise but makes for a pretty good comedy.
Believe me, I have been laughed at when people see this in my collection but honestly every time it comes on I watch THE WHOLE THING. When your most memorable character is a foul mouthed kicker who smokes on the field you know you’re in plot trouble but somehow it all works for me.
From a marketing point of view, this could actually be a good movie to bring to blu ray within the next year or so. That is especially true if the NFL players continue to threaten striking and would be a fantastic time to go back to the vault and touch this up with a new transfer for the pending canceled NFL season. What better way to celebrate no football than by watching no name players, teams, and sexy cheerleaders in HD with all the glitz and glamor that blu can provide? The stadium scenes are shot very well and the audio would be a treat at least.
Yes, the movie sucks. Yes, I watch it anyway. The movie may be number 3,200,199 in the list of top movies but it is number one in my heart. May The Replacements reign in 2010… or 2011. Or in another country so I can import it.

1492:Conquest of Paradise
A guilty pleasure of mine. It may not be
Ridley Scott’s best “historical epic”, but
I thought it was quite good back in 1992.
Casting a Frenchman to play an Italian explorer who sailed for Spain was an odd choice, but somehow it works. Most have to agree it has one of the best soundtracks ever.
Sadly, it’s never even been released on DVD
for R1. It has been released in a few other
regions, but most of the transfers are spotty
at best. It would be a perfect time to release
it on blu-ray when Robin Hood comes out later
this year.

My guilty pleasure is a movie called Rad which I have a recorded version from HDNET from my DVR. I have found myself coming back to this title over and over again.Everything from it’s cheesy acting to it’s equally cheesy 80’s music is what keeps me watching this and I will still proudly crank this over my 7.1 surround sound setup but would love to have this in a DTS HD or Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.
Peter Hendrix
My favorite guilty pleasure is the 1989 film The Punisher starring Dolph Lundgren and Lou Gossett Jr. The guy is riding a motorcycle through the sewers for crying out loud and no one seems to be able to catch him despite multiple high profile murder sprees and a APB out on him. Bad story, bad acting and bad dialog, there is nothing really redeeming about this movie other than ridiculous over the top action scenes fueled by pure testosterone. Despite my shaking my head every time I watch this movie, I really would like to see it on blu ray, hoping that somehow the hi-def upgrade would make this a socially acceptable movie to break out at a gathering so I can just say “you gotta check out these action scenes in hi-def!!” What would most likely happen is I would mutter to myself after much laughter “Well, I liked this movie…”
Nat Alder
Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy, because, who wouldn’t want to see Jane Fonda parading around half naked on some other planet with a ray gun in HD? It would be a crime not to. Take that, Avatar. By the way, Fonda does a strip tease in the opening credits. Awesome.
Daniel O'Reilly
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry. One of the best chase movies ever made. Quentin Tarantino likes it, so you know it’s probably not that great. And it isn’t. Susan George’s whole performance is colored by moronic camp (exemplified when she says, “I think someone’s knocking at the door,” after Peter Fonda’s Charger is sideswiped). And yet, unlike Zoe Bell in Death Proof, George doesn’t bother me. The whole film is fun. It’s not deep and it isn’t to be taken too seriously. But it is fast and never bores. With a couple of exceptions, both the chasers and the chased are surprisingly smart. The ending could be just a little too abrupt and ironic, but it provides a genuine jolt. The current DVD looks pretty decent for a DVD. It could clean up and look great on BD.
Jason Stanley
Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Though I have it on HD-DVD, it’s a shame that’s the only way to watch it in HD. I’m slowing exchanging my red cases for their Blu counterparts, but I’m still waiting on that one. Burton’s visionary style and Danny Elfman’s musical genius shine in this newer version of the beloved tale. Not to detract from the first adaptation, but I love this version (besides, the other one IS on blu-ray).
Jeff Cannon
Guilty Pleasure : The Scent of Green Papaya
I like it for its sheer beauty. The cinematography was so exquisitely done that I swear I could smell the papaya and feel the humidity when it was raining. There are so many absolutely gorgeous moments in this film. The colors and the light come together seamlessly with the framing and sound to create a sort of “living painting,” a frame-by-frame composition that moves and changes, quietly enchanting the viewer with a poetic and lyrical clarity. This is that rare movie that generates a deep inner smile that lasts and lasts.
I would like to see all that rich and saturated color, so artfully presented, in full Blu-ray splendor. I think Blu-ray could elevate this film to a whole other level, in which the art in this film truly shines.
Eric Hixson
My guilty pleasure movie isn’t reviled, but it’s not exactly loved either. Part Tarantino, part vampire flic it never really caught on in either genre, but to me it is an absolutely wonderful film. I’m talking about “From Dusk Till Dawn”. I love every moment of this film. It is easily Clooney’s best big screen role, as he is a total badass. My favorite line is his, towards the end of the film, when talking to Cheech (playing his third character in the film), “Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits ’em. I don’t give a fuck how crazy they are!” The film blends comedy, action, and horror in just the right mix to make in my estimation a near perfect film. I love this movie, and I don’t care who knows it!
HuskerGuy
Ok, just thought of another one.
Movie – 3000 Miles to Graceland
Why I Love It – Ice-T hanging upside down while dual wielding uzis and ziplining across a warehouse smoking fools. That’s one reason I love 3000 Miles to Graceland. The movie knows what it is and it accomplishes it with unapologetic awesomeness. I remember renting this movie from Blockbuster back in the day, not knowing a thing about it other than the box art had Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell dressed up as Elvis impersonators with the tagline “Crime is King”. I brought it home, watched it, loved it, returned it, and then bought it all within about 4-5 hours.
The story and action are over-the-top fun. Combine a cast that includes Kevin Costner, Kurt Russell, Christian Slater, David Arquette, Bokeem Woodbine, Ice-T, Howie Long, and a smokin’ hot Courtney Cox and a kick-ass soundtrack and you’ve got my kind of movie.
Kevin Costner commits himself to this horrible role of a guy who truly thinks he is Elvis’ kid (kick ass sideburns included) and he leads a team of four other guys for a good ole’ fashioned, guns blazing casino heist. Of course, things don’t go right and it ends up pitting Costner vs. Russell in an action packed finale.
God damn the action scenes are just plain fun in this movie with some great one-liners and fantastic music that kicks in right when it should. Costner is perfect for the role and makes the movie imo.
It needs the HD treatment because – For the same reason as any other movie, it’ll look a ton better and sound a ton better (hopefully that is). The action sequences would be amazing to watch and listen to in high-def glory. Like I said at the beginning, it’s has a scene featuring Ice-T spinning down a zipline while packing two uzis all set to a kick-ass rock track. That alone should be enough reason, but the movie packs in even more fun that I hope I’ll be able to watch on blu someday.

A Christopher Guest Box Set (Waiting for Guffman, Best In Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration). Just release all of them at once. I realize the video quality is sub-par, but the 50GB medium lends itself to the countless hours of deleted improv scenes that Guest has alluded to many times and no one has ever seen. C’mon, we’ve waited long enough.

the movie that i would want to see on blu would have to be just friends because it sadily describes a portion of my life and i also thought it was super funny… even if no one else did. the thing that would make it so good on blu is all the terrable singing by anna ferris and chris klein… even though i kind of ejoyed it.

Showdown in Little Tokyo
Because it is hilarious and Dolph Lundgren has the largest penis Brandon Lee has ever seen on a man. What’s not to like? Lots of boobs and a white man from Sweden is a bad ass samurai. “Kick his ass samurai.” Plus there is genuine chemistry between Brandon Lee and Dolph. I’ve had this taped on a vhs from HBO, a bought real VHS copy, and the dvd. Would love a blu ray in wide screen. All the copies I’ve had have been pan and scan.

MY GUILY PLEASURE:
BRING IT ON
I have been in need of a new copy of this movie as my DVD copy is worn and skips a lot now. This is just one of those movies that I can pop into the DVD player and just unplug for a while and just enjoy. Oh and Eliza Dushku in a cheerleading outfit is always a bonus.
(pause for salivation)
It’s funny, and I love funny movies. Also a great movie to plop down with a female and not finish watching 🙂
Majekowski
I really want Tremors to be released on Blu -ray. It was my favorite movie as a kid and still holds up well to me. I realize many people enjoy this movie, but most people think I am crazy for enjoying it so much. The movie really is cheesy, but at least the filmmakers are aware of this. For example, a character owns a cannon. Seeing any movie in blu-ray over a sub-par non-anamorphic DVD is a treat, even if the HD transfer isn’t the greatest. Hopefully it will have nice detail. Anyways, the movie is just good fun. I mean, how often does a movie have the female lead take off her pants so she can run away from a large desert worm? Hilarious.

My Guilty Pleasure would be the six-episode Star Wars Saga. If only because I’m a little guilty to admit that I like the prequels almost as much as the originals. Revenge of ths Sith especially would be an excellent bit of eye candy, and would no doubt have an awesome Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA track.
There would, of course, be no guilt with A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, but if I’m going to get the Star Wars flicks, I finally want an Ultimate box set of all of them.
