Blu-ray Highlights: Week of December 23rd, 2018 – The Holiday Dead Zone

‘Twas release day on Christmas, and you’d be a fool;
If you expected new Blu-rays this week… ‘cept perhaps a repackaged Deadpool.

Which Blu-rays Interest You This Week (12/25/18)?

Let’s not kid ourselves that much of anything is going on in the home video world on a week when Christmas lands on Tuesday. Everybody should be done with their shopping already and, in a lot of cases, probably traveling for the holiday. It’s kind of amazing that we get even two titles with any sort of name recognition.

New Releases

White Boy Rick – Based on a true story about a white trash kid (Richie Merritt) who gets mixed up running guns with his dirtbag father (Matthew McConaughey), becoming an FBI informant, and eventually going to prison for drug dealing, the lightweight crime drama received mixed reviews that lauded McConaughey’s scene-stealing performance but were critical of a script that clearly fudges its facts to make the main character look more sympathetic. Its box office was also underwhelming, but it’ll probably have a healthy run on cable eventually.

Catalog Titles

The only other release of note is a double-feature bundle of both Deadpool movies. Even that seems like an afterthought considering that Fox released a 4k version of this same package back in August.

My $.02

I already have both Deadpool movies on Blu-ray and I don’t have any interest in White Boy Rick. I guess that does it for me. I assume that most of our readers will feel the same, but I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

Have a great Christmas! We have a handful of posts to dole out (some good ones, too), but don’t be surprised if the next couple weeks are a little slow around here.

    I might rent White Boy Rick some time but no hurry. I have one parcel coming this week and I may stop at Best Buy for one last swipe. Unless there any more truly tantalizing sales that pop up on Amazon, I’m pretty much done for movies in 2018. It also depends on what I get for Christmas.

    My Blu-ray highlights this week were the Adventures of Prince Achmed which I received for Christmas and the Fabulous Baron Munchausen (Baron Prášil) (1962) which I had ordered from the UK and which arrived the day after Christmas; both arrivals joined last week’s Méliès set. A merry fairytale Christmas!

    Ha, I did not even think about disc releases this week and am surprised anyone did it. Here it is Sunday, and I am just now looking at this.
