Ant-Man and the Wasp

SteelBook Alert: A Bug in the System

Collectors of Marvel SteelBooks can get their preorders in for the studio’s third superhero adventure of 2018. Meanwhile, fans of the Matrix film franchise have another excuse to rebuy three movies they probably already own too many copies of.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Video Formats: Blu-ray/Ultra HD (no 3D)
Available at: Best Buy (ORDER HERE)
Release date: TBD
Price: $34.99

I’m not typically a fan of comic book art on SteelBook covers, but I surprisingly don’t mind this one, even though I’ve heard some griping from other fans who really hate it. Best Buy is only offering the movie in a Blu-ray/UHD combo, with no Blu-ray standalone.

Zavvi in the UK will also have SteelBook editions for the movie, but only temp art is available so far. This will certainly change before release. I post it now because this is the only way to get the movie in 3D with a SteelBook and Zavvi’s Marvel SteelBooks tend to sell out quickly. If you’re a SteelBook collector who cares about 3D, you’ll have to take a bit of a risk and blind-order without knowing what the art will look like. Keep in mind that you can always cancel the preorder before release if you don’t care for the design when it’s finally revealed.

[Update: It turns out that Zavvi is using the same art as Best Buy.]

The Matrix

Video Formats: Blu-ray/Ultra HD
Available at: Best Buy (ORDER HERE)
Release date: October 2, 2018
Price: $32.99

Warner Bros. upgraded The Matrix to 4k earlier this year, minus either of its sequels. For some reason, that disc had stock issues and was very hard to track down at retail. Now the studio has announced UHD versions of all three movies, to be sold either in a Trilogy box set or standalone copies. The latter will also have some SteelBooks at Best Buy.

Unfortunately, all three SteelBooks are weird Photoshop bastardizations of previous poster art designs. They’re all pretty bad, especially the comically awful keyring theme used on Reloaded.

The Matrix Reloaded

Release date: October 2, 2018
Price: $32.99

Rubbing salt in the wound, the inner art on this case features a still from the silly rave sequence that is almost universally regarded as the worst scene in the entire trilogy.

Even as a big metal case collector, I think it may be better (and cheaper as well) to forego the SteelBooks for this series and stick with the regular Trilogy box set instead.

The person responsible for The Matrix Trilogy steelbook art should be fired immediately.
This WILL impact the sales. I own over 1000 steelbooks and I would never buy these POS. They are right there with Pop Art crap covers.

At least, there’s some kind of justification with the Keymaster plot and the key ring idea (bad idea still).

But what’s with the 3rd film’s art cover? The Matrix ejaculated?! That must be the porno parody version.

We are zooming into a picture to determine if it’s rain drop splashes or it’s something unimaginably worse. Shivers!

And Josh, please don’t use the phrase the “climax of that movie.” Freud has a few words for you.
