The Predator

SteelBook Alert: Time to Bleed

A bunch of recent movies have been announced to get 4k Ultra HD SteelBook editions. Amazingly, not all of them are Pop Art monstrosities.

The Predator

Video Formats: Blu-ray/UHD
Available at: Best Buy (ORDER HERE) or Zavvi (ORDER HERE)
Release date: TBD
Price: $29.99 (USA) / £29.99 (UK)

Shane Black’s reworking of the Predator franchise hasn’t exactly wowed many critics or audiences thus far, but it’s the type of movie that will still draw franchise completists and sci-fi/horror fans to buy it on disc in fancy packaging.

The artwork below (taken from the Zavvi listing, though Best Buy’s temp image is very similar) is a direct copy of the movie’s primary poster design. I’m not a huge fan of the red, personally. It looks a little garish to me, but it could be worse.

As you can see in tiny print in the top corner, this may still be subject to change before release.

UPDATE: Best Buy and Zavvi have both posted new artwork.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (USA)

Video Formats: UHD (no Blu-ray?)
Available at: Best Buy (ORDER HERE)
Release date: TBD
Price: $34.99

The sixth of super-spy Ethan Hunt’s impossible missions was not just the highest-grossing entry in the franchise, it’s the highest-grossing movie Tom Cruise has ever made, which seems almost… well… impossible. It was also greeted with rave reviews, especially praising the quality of the action scenes and stunts.

The American SteelBook art is fairly nice. It’s classy, if a little unexciting.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (Germany)

Video Formats: Blu-ray/UHD
Available at: Amazon Germany (ORDER HERE)
Release date: December 28, 2018
Price: €39.99

The movie will have different SteelBook art in Europe. This one’s a little more dynamic, playing up both Cruise’s stuntwork and the pun in the movie’s title.

Skyscraper

Video Formats: Blu-ray/UHD (no 3D)
Available at: Best Buy (ORDER HERE)
Release date: October 9, 2018
Price: $34.99

If Tom Cruise jumping out of an airplane doesn’t do it for you, how about Dwayne Johnson defying all physics and gravity to leap an impossible distance off a crane into a building window?

The First Purge

Video Formats: Blu-ray/UHD
Available at: Best Buy (ORDER HERE)
Release date: October 2, 2018
Price: $34.99

The title The First Purge sounds like it ought to be a coming-of-age drama about a teenage girl’s struggle with bulimia. If it were, though, this SteelBook image would be all sorts of messed-up.

Josh, to your knowledge does Zaavi ever re-issue steelbooks that have sold out? I’m super-sad I missed out on the From Dusk Til Dawn one a few years back and would love to pick it up one day….

Many of their SteelBooks, especially Marvel SteelBooks, sell out very quickly. If you check back repeatedly, sometimes they re-open for order in brief windows before street date if some buyers cancel their preorders.

Most Zavvi exclusive SteelBooks are considered limited edition items. Once they completely sell out, they don’t get reissued. However, Zavvi may later offer new SteelBooks with different art for the same title. I’ve seen that a lot for Marvel and Pixar titles recently.

Thanks for the info Josh (sorry it took me so long to reply), I had actually never ordered anything from Zaavi up until this week. I was looking at picking up a copy of Hereditary but hate yhe standard cover artwork on the studio bluray. I stumbled upon the gorgeous Zaavi steelbook of it which cones out next month and ordered it immediately. I’ve been browsing their site and while they have several I wouldn’t mind picking up, the FDTD one is now my most sought-after one (that cover art! Amazing!) I checked Ebay but they all seem to be going for astronomical prices these days. Hence my question about re-releases. If you EVER happen to see one for around $50 USD, grab it for me and I’ll pay you back and then some.

Julian, (I hope you’re reading, and you notice this comment) it seems like you’ve indicated that you live in Finland. Is that correct? My understanding is that Mission: Impossible — Fallout 3D Blu-ray will only be available in Finland. I’m wondering if you can figure out how to buy a copy and give me some useful details. (Sorry, Josh, this was the only bonus view post that had anything to do with a Mission: Impossible — Fallout Blu-ray). The 3D on this film was EXTREMELY well implemented, and I’m shocked that the rest of the world isn’t offering a 3D Blu-ray. As superb as this film is, I have no interest watching it on my JVC 4K/3D projector, without seeing it in 3D.
